CUP FINAL, 1955-56. The Council of the Football Association of Ireland

tenders congratulations to Shamrock Rovers and Cork Athletic on reaching this seasons Cup Final. Both clubs have worthily earned the dist inction of contesting the Final for the Blue Riband of Association Football to-day_

Both Shamrock Rovers and Cork Athletic are renowned Cup fighters and they should provide this afternoon one of the finest games in the history of the Football Association of Ireland Cup. Shamrock Rovers have an unsurpassed record in the Cup having won it on twelve occasions and hold the proud record of having won it five times in succession. Cork Athletic are appearing in their fifth final in seven years and this competition always seems to bring out the best in the Leesiders. Despite Rovers great Cup record, the Athletics great win over Waterford in the semi-final replay will make them favourites with many to earn their third cup victory_

SHAMROCK ROVERS

Most football clubs have h ad a humble beginning and the now famous Shamrock Rovers are no exception to the rule. In 1901 a group of soccer enthusiasts in the Ringsend district decided to form a club of their own and of the many names suggested as the title of the club Shamrock Rovers was the one eventually decided on. The first two years of the club were spent in playing friendly games but in 1903 a team was entered in the Co. Dublin League and Leinster Junior Cup. Success did not come immediately but they made a valiant effort to carry off the Cup at their first attempt, being only defeated in the semi-finals by St. Patrick's, Inchicore at the third attempt. In 1904-5 they won the League without suffering a defeat and won the Leinster Junior Cup a performance they r epeated the following season. In spite of these successes the Rovers were unable, through not having a private ground, to enter the Senior League and under the name of St. Patrick's the club took part in the Sunday League.

In 1914 Shamrock Rovers were revived again and immediately hit the headlines winning the Junior League. They also won the Irish JUnIor Cup a feat that had only being equalled by two Southern Clubs, Reginald and Chapelizod.

The Great War forced the club out of existence and it was not until 1920 that it was revived. In 1921, on the formation of the Football Association of Ireland Shamrock Rovers joined Senior ranks. This venture was a most successful one, for the club won the Leinster Senior League and reached the final of the F.A.I. Cup in which competitidn they were defeated by St. James's Gate by 1 goal to nil in a r eplay.

In 1922-23 they entered the Free State League and won it at the first attempt. In 1924-25 they captured the League, Shield and Cup without suffering a defeat, a truly wonderf ul achievement. In 1931-32 they repeated this performance. In all they have won the League Championship six times and the Shield Championship on nine occasions. Their record of winning the Football Association of Ireland Cup twelve times, five times in succession, is a formidable one. Other great successes during their grea: career are seven Leinster Senior Cup victories and 4 victories in the Inter-City Cup Competition. Another memorable milestone in the club's h istory was reached last season when they defeated the Football League Champions, Chelsea, at Dalymount Park by 3 goals to 2.

FOOTBAL L -AS SHE WAS PLAYED. By BIG BILL ("Sunday Press}})

To-day you're looking at another F.A.I. Cup final (In my usual cranky manner, let me say I hope it will be better than the last two, but I think it will). There will be ele en men on each side, as in any match, the ref, the linesmen, they'll be there two.

But wouldn't you get a drop if the ref came out carrying a flag, and when he wanted to stop play, just waved his flag and shouted? Yet that's what happened prior to 1878. In that year, the referees

started to use whistles. And even yet, the laws of the game mention only a "signal," saying nothing about a whistle.

The game has changed quite a bit s ince 1875. Before then, there was no such things as crossbars. A piece of string or tape tied between the posts did well enough. (Anyway, didn't we play with coats for goal posts, up around the Dog pond in the Park before we were big enough for the Acres?).

Sam Widdowson, of Notts Forest, was the man mainly responsible for the present-day line out. Around 1875, the line out was: -a goalie, two three quarter backs, two half backs and six forwards, with two centre forwards, one behind the other.

Sam introduced the five forwards and three half backs system. H e also invented shin guards, but considered that players should wear them outside their stockings.

In those days, the ref. used control the game from the side line and he had two umpires, one in each half of the field. (No cracks, though there might be a lot in that system to-day). It wasn't until 1891, that h e took control in the field and his helpers became linesmen.

Before 1887, goalkeepers could handle the ball in any part of the field, but in that year , the F.A. decided t hat a goalie in his opponent's half could h ardly be considered to be in defence in his own goal, so he was confined to his own half.

The year 1891 was import ant to t he game, for it was then that James Brodie, of Liverpool invented goal nets. The nets cut down a lot of arguments which could easily arise as you'll probably remember from your three-and-in days with the coats. . And it was in 1891 that the last major alteration to the rules was made. Before that, t he referee was allowed to award a goal for deliberate handling. As a matter of interest, the first goal scored from a penalty was by a chap by name Rodgers who played for Rotherham, in a game against Darlington.

So, all in all, it must have been quite a game in the good old days.

CORK ATHLETIC

"Here we are again, happy as can be, real old pals and jolly good company." They are the words of a well known old song and they might well apply to Cork Athletic, who are here to contest another final. Their opponents this time are Shamrock Rovers, renowned Cup fighters, and t hey are hoping to emulate Cork Cup winning teams of the past.

Formed less than 10 years ago, after the retiral of Cork United from the F.A.I., the Athletic almost immediately made their mark and in the period since their formation have captured the F.A.I. Cup twice and have been League Champions on two occasions. In this period many fine players have worn the Green Shirt of Cork and fans will have no difficulty in recalling the names of Ned Courtney, David and Paddy Noonan, Florrie Burke, Jackie O'Reilly and Paddy O'Leary.

Slow starters, Cork have seldom been seen to advantage in the early part of the season and this season they have followed their now familiar pattern. They finished in the bottom half of the Shield table, made a promising start in the League but again finished in the lower half with seventeen points. They, in fact, only avoided having to apply for re-election on goal average. Cork's performances in the Cup has been quite different. Accounting for St. Patrick's Athletic they then proceeded to trounce Waterford 5-1, after a drawn game. If this form can be taken as the criterion, then Shamrocks have an outsize problem, particularly as Shamrocks defence has not been too steady of late and Jimmy Delaney is a great opportunist.

On their way to the final , Athletic also surmounted a stiff obstacle in their local rivals Evergreen United. After a drawn game Cork won the replay, which was a closely contested affair. On the whole it would appear that the Leesiders have had the more difficult passage to the final.

In the season 1952/ 53 Athletic introduced the English International "Raich" Carter to their side and their great enterprise was amply rewarded when "Raich" helped them to gain their second F .A.I. Cup victory. Cork supporters are now hoping that this season's similar gamble in securing Jimmy Delaney will be equally successful. The Scotsman has played a very big part in getting Cork to the Cup final.

P. O 'TOOLE , Goalkeeper-Has only recently returned from England where he pla,ed in Amateur League Football . Standing ove r six feet tall he has ove rcom e nervou sness , and may solve one of Corks problems .

p . NOONAN , Right Back-A veteran of the side . Has gained Inter-League honours . He has made a great come back after having a broken leg, w hich he sustained in a collision w ith Billy Elliott the Sunderland and England winger. His full back partnership with Dave has long been the backbon e of the Cork defence.

D. NOONAN , Left Back-Another Inter-League player. Dave was honoured by the League at full back and centre half . He also captained the side. This versatile player has given Cork. g reat service. His greatest display was, perhaps , when he moved into the mid dl e after Florrie ' Burke 's injury and blotted o ut Nat Lofthouse the Eng li$ League centre forward . Again this year he has played a major part fn 'bt'nging his si de to the final. Few people will believe oc>nan first played as left winge r , and is most unlucky not to have gained an Inte rnational Cap.

J. MALON . Ri g ht Half-A constructive wing-ha lf and a full n inty minutes pl llyer. Though still quite yoU g John has joined in m'any cup battles for Cork . Uritil the advent of Ji mm y Delaney he was captain of the side . His brot her Bill is a lso a member of the Athiet ic, but was injured in the drawn semi-final against aterford .

J. COUGHL,AN , Centre Half-Anoth~r versat ile player, John played at r igh t back, right half, and c " re forward for h is club and has now settled dOW A at pivo1:. Good in he ir, with a ~trong tack le , "Rovers " will certa inly find the road down the o.flllddle is not an easy one.

T. COLLlNS , Inside Right~A former Junior Cork Gael ic footballer , Tom my changed over to Soccer a few seasons ago. A hard worki ng insi de forward with a good shot. Coli ins is a prolific goal scorer.

J. DELANEY , Centre Forward-Jimmy is the G.O .M. anct: captain of the side . Very little can be said about this player that is not already known . He has won English , Scott is h, Irish F.A . Cup Winners Medals and many Irish follo~rs would like to see th is grand sport~man ad d another to his collection ~~. .

J. MURPHY , Inside Left-. clever inside forward , Murphy played a big part in t he de fea t of Waterfor d, scor ing twice . During the season he was unable to hold down a regul a r place with Athletic , but if he retains his form he should be sure of a place in the forthcoming season .

D. WALLACE , Outside Left-Donie an em ployee of Un iversity College, Cork started his career with Glasheen . A da inty footballer with a grand shot , Wallace has given many full bac~s the " run around " during the ~ast season . Donie was " capped " by the League at Belfast recently and it should not be his I honour.

This afternoon you are watching two clubs, which between them have appeared in twenty-eight Cup fil]als , though in the case of Cork , the label on the bottle has not always,)een the same.

Shamrock Rovers , who contest'ed th e first final in 1922, when beaten by St. James 's Gate after a re-play ' a re th is afternoon figuring in their sixteenth final. Of the fifteen in which they have ap peared they have been twelve times the winners.

I .. ,

The Cup has gone to the City o f.. Cork, six times , wit,h Athle ti c, appearing in the fifth final in the past seV,~(1 ',seasons , ' anct having. woh ' it twice , when they beat Shelbourne 1-0 in 1951 and Evergreen Un ited 2-1 after a replay.

The first Cork team to win th e Cup was Fordsons , when beating Rovers by the odd goal in five ' in 1926, and two years before they also reached the final to gd under to Athlone Town , 1-0. When Fordsons went out of existence, or changed th eir name plate to Cork the Cup went a second time to Leeside, when ' playing as plain Cork they beat St. Jam es's Gate 2-1 in 1934.

Two years la~er , 1936. we had the. Dubliners winning 2-1. Then th ~ Leesiders again changed their narne-p l;lte. They became Cork Un ited to appear in the 1941 final in which. aft e r a re play they defeated Waterfo fd 3-1.

Still playing as Cork United, th e t ea m contested the finals the two ,Jpl lowing years , 1942 and 1943, going down 3-1 to Dundalk in the first and to Drumcondra , 2-1, in the second. Then in 1947, and still called " United " the Cup went to Lees ide a fourth time . when Bohem ians after a 2_2 dra w, were beaten 2-0 in the re-play .

it will be the third tim e since th e Cup was inaugurated in 1921-22 tha t they have battled for th e troph ):. in th e final . ith a Cork club . First t hey lost 3-2 to Fordsons . then representin t'h l'eeside city in 1926, and ten years later , 1936 they beat Cork as it was then na med , 2-1.

Though I do not attach much im po rtance or in fact any at a ll to current season's records in Leagu e an d Shield , when it comes to th e Cup which is a horse of an entire ly diffe rent co lour. it is still nevertheless of in te res t that whereas up to now Cork Athletic have won nothing at all this campaign , Rovers have carried off the Shield , and Leinster Cup, finished runnersup in t~ e League . and are in the final of the Top Four League Cup .

On the surface those figures would make Rovers look a good thing for to-day 's combat. but when it comes to do in g the job on hand. which is reaching the final . we must not forget that Cork Athletic on the trek to Dalymount have eliminated three of the Top Four Leagu e Cup contenders -St. Patrick's, Waterford and Evergreen United.

Appearing in to-day 's final will be on e player with a chance of making soccer history. It's j im my Delaoey , Cork 's Scottish international , signed four months ago w ith the set idea of ' putting the Athl etic where they are to-day, which of cou rse is in the C up fi nal.

jimmy, as lish and act ive on the field as a t wenty-year-old , is after hi s fourth Cup medal , with each earned in a different country. He won a Scottish Cup medal with Celt ic , an English one with Manchester United , a third with Derry , and now he ho pes to improve on his unique record with a F.A.1. winning medal.

Paddy Coad . Rovers captain, is looking for h is fifth Cup medal this afternoon. But this won't be a record. " Sacky " Glenn won six Cup medals with Rovers and another with Shelbourne , while j . j . Flood . another Rovers s talwart of othe r days collected ha lf a dozen . And j . Bu rke . father of full-back Mick , who is on duty this afternoon won five all in a row between 1929 and 1933.

In Rovers ' team every player has earned inter-l eagu e honours with th e Exce ption of the right wing pa ir. jimmy McCann and Noel Peyt on .
