EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Mission-critical functions at the heart of your business — such as order entry, finance, human

resources, customer relationship management, and enterprise resource planning — frequently

depend on “always-on” and scalable Oracle Database functionality. In the past, many businesses

have selected HP-UX/Itanium systems as the backbone of an Oracle Database infrastructure

because they could supply the throughput and availability needed for key database workloads.

In addition, HP-UX/Itanium solutions are backed by the expertise and responsiveness of HP’s

worldwide service and support organizations.

The life cycle of an HP-UX/Itanium infrastructure for Oracle Database, however, is rapidly

coming to an end. On July 1, 2013, Oracle announced the availability of Oracle Database 12c.

Because cloud deployments are the projected direction for IT services, Oracle Database 12c

follows a multi-tenant architecture that facilitates cloud delivery of database services. It seeks

to simplify database management tasks by managing multiple co-located databases as one,

while simultaneously enabling data isolation and database resource prioritization. Changes to

existing Oracle database tables and applications are not required. However, Oracle supports this

new release only on Solaris, Windows, and Linux® operating systems—and not on HP-UX. This

means that current HP-UX customers must migrate to a different platform to take advantage of

Oracle Database 12c and its ability to ease the transition to a database service cloud.

Red Hat® Enterprise Linux is a sound platform choice when migrating Oracle Database work-

loads from HP-UX/Itanium. Only Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers enterprise performance, scal-

ability, and reliability similar to HP-UX, comparable instrumentation, and cloud readiness—plus

the demonstrated stability of Linux market leadership. This paper highlights the compelling

advantages of hosting Oracle Database workloads on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It also describes

benefits that other businesses have experienced in moving Oracle Databases from HP-UX to a

Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform.

WHY CHOOSE RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX FOR ORACLE DATABASE?

UNIX/RISC systems once boasted unparalleled scalability and reliability in comparison to x86/Linux

systems, especially for demanding business-critical database applications. As powerful, energy-effi-

cient, multi-core x86 systems evolved over the last decade, Linux features and enhancements have

also advanced, capitalizing on these systems’ performance, availability, and scale to satisfy database

application requirements.

Market share numbers demonstrate how businesses are adopting Linux as a standardized strate-

gic platform for enterprise applications. Recent IDC worldwide server market statistics illustrate

the ongoing trend: for the first quarter of 2013, UNIX server revenues declined rapidly while Linux

continued to thrive in spite of a sluggish economy and a slight overall downturn in server volumes.

IDC reported a dramatic 35.9% decline in UNIX worldwide server revenues, the seventh consecutive

quarter of revenue decline in the UNIX server market. For the same quarter, Windows servers saw a

4.2% decline in hardware revenues. The Linux server market, however, experienced a modest year-

over-year revenue growth of 3.4%. Linux servers now represent 23.1% of the total server market, up

2.5% over the first quarter of 2012.1

In an April 2012 report entitled “The Future of UNIX: Hazy and Overcast, So Reach for the Umbrella,”

Gartner forecasts that, over the next 5 years, 65% of applications running on proprietary UNIX (e.g.,

Solaris, AIX, or HP-UX) will move to x86 systems, primarily on Linux.2 Gartner predicts that UNIX

volumes will continue to drop quickly as companies migrate legacy mission-critical applications off

of UNIX and standardize on cost-effective, enterprise-class Linux servers.

THE LINUX LEADER: RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX

When planning a migration of your Oracle Database infrastructure, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is an

excellent choice for your enterprise Linux platform. Numerous companies have proven its enter-

prise-class performance and reliability. That’s why Red Hat Enterprise Linux holds the strongest

industry position—with 65.4% market share of all paid shipments, subscriptions, and non-paid

deployments in 2012.3 Red Hat Enterprise Linux supplies enterprise scalability, first-to-market vali-

dated technologies, and solid industry and partner commitment.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux features an extensive ecosystem of hardware and software partners,

giving you a range of deployment options. It offers a greater number of platform, device driver, and

application certifications than any other Linux, with over 3,600 certified hardware platforms and

more than 14,000 certified applications from 1,300 different ISVs. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a Tier

1 development platform for most hardware and software vendors, which translates into fast time-to-

market for new application releases as well as rapid availability of patches and other updates.

The strong and cooperative nature of Red Hat’s relationships with hardware and software vendors

contributes to synchronized product roadmaps and fast problem resolution. Red Hat engineers

work closely with Oracle Database certification engineers to optimize and qualify Oracle Database

releases on multiple Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases.

With a standardized Oracle Database infrastructure based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you gain

flexibility and choice. You can choose to deploy your database applications on virtually any certified

x86 platform. If you choose to deploy on HP hardware, you can actually purchase a full solution—HP

ProLiant servers and Red Hat Enterprise Linux—from HP, all on the same purchase order. Red Hat’s

OEM partners work diligently to certify all Red Hat software products on their hardware systems,

collaborating with Red Hat to deliver sales, support, and consulting services.

Because Red Hat Enterprise Linux is open source, it brings you the advantage of continuous com-

munity-powered Linux innovations. At the same time, you gain the benefits of Red Hat’s stringent

quality assurance testing and evaluation processes—before you move your core database applica-

tions into production.

Your infrastructure operations receive support through active Red Hat software subscriptions,

which give you 24x7 access to the enterprise-level global support needed for mission-critical data-

base applications. Each major Red Hat Enterprise Linux release on x86 is supported for a 10-year

lifespan, providing a stable and long-lived enterprise platform. When newly introduced features are

mature and thoroughly tested, they are integrated and delivered during the subscription lifecycle

at no additional cost, adding value throughout the subscription lifetime. And an active subscription

entitles you to technical assistance at any time—not just when there’s a problem. You can call a Red

Hat Certified Engineer 24x7 to help you resolve questions and issues quickly, which can help you

meet strict service level agreements (SLAs).

BUILD ON PROVEN SUCCESS

The decision to migrate your Oracle Database workloads to Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a sound one,

proven by existing deployments and successful migrations. Many customers have moved their mis-

sion-critical database infrastructures from HP-UX/Itanium and other RISC/UNIX systems to Red Hat

Enterprise Linux on x86 systems. Here are a few examples.

LUFTHANSA CARGO AG

One of the world’s leading cargo and airfreight logistics companies, Lufthansa Cargo AG migrated

its global shipment status processing system on Oracle Database from HP-UX to Red Hat Enterprise

Linux on HP ProLiant servers. With the assistance of Red Hat Consulting, deployment into produc-

tion took only a single month.

NYSE EURONEXT

NYSE Euronext’s equities markets—the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Euronext, NYSE MKT, NYSE

Alternext, and NYSE Arca—represent one-third of the world’s equities trading. With their migration

to a standardized Red Hat Enterprise Linux and HP ProLiant platform, they found enterprise-class

performance, reliability, and security to support their demanding financial trading business.

ODYSSEY LOGISTICS & TECHNOLOGY

Odyssey Logistics & Technology (OL&T) delivers a comprehensive portfolio of logistics services

to chemicals and process manufacturing industries so that clients’ products are delivered safely,

reliably, and economically. OL&T needed to scale its existing IT infrastructure to meet exponen-

tial growth in the business. Specifically they needed to add Oracle transaction processing capac-

ity beyond what the current HP-UX infrastructure could address. At the same time, reliability was

crucial since new customers included some of the largest and most recognizable names in the

chemical industry. “We’re integrated right into our customers’ supply chain operations, and have

to respond in real time to their needs 24/7,” said Brad Massey, the director of IT Support Services.

“We’re mission-critical to them, which means that having a stable infrastructure is mission-critical

to us.”

We started with our Oracle Database, and our HP-UX batch processing, and were

so pleased with the results that we have

POSCO ICT

As an IT service provider, POSCO ICT built and maintained an IT infrastructure to deliver services

to its customers, including database applications such as enterprise resource planning, enterprise

application integration, and content management. Over time, its IT infrastructure became complex,

spanning many different servers and operating systems (including HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, Linux, and

Microsoft Windows). POSCO ICT replaced its legacy IT infrastructure with a new one based on Red

Hat Enterprise Linux running on Intel® Xeon® processor-based servers. To support the migration,

Red Hat delivered quality technical services managed through a Technical Account Manager (TAM)

who had a deep understanding of the project.

MIGRATE TO AN ENTERPRISE-READY PLATFORM

By migrating to an Oracle Database infrastructure, these companies learned that the combination

of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and x86 servers forms an effective, mission-critical alternative to RISC/

UNIX systems. By choosing Red Hat Enterprise Linux—the market-leader—these businesses and

others have deployed an enterprise-class, production-ready Linux. They’ve proven that the Red

Hat Enterprise Linux platform supplies the performance, scalability, availability, security, and man-

ageability needed to drive core Oracle applications at the heart of their businesses. The next few

pages elaborate on how Red Hat Enterprise Linux creates an enterprise-ready platform for Oracle

Database and other mission-critical applications.

OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE AND SCALE

When combined with powerful and scalable Red Hat Enterprise Linux software, advanced multi-core

Intel and AMD x86 processors bring unprecedented performance and scalability to enterprise data-

centers. In a migration project, many companies experience performance gains that translate to

increased scale with fewer servers, even for demanding enterprise applications like Oracle Database.

Because the OS features excellent performance and scalability under increasing loads, system

vendors often select Red Hat Enterprise Linux when showcasing product performance using indus-

try-standard benchmarks. For evaluating database performance, hardware vendors often run the

Transaction Processing Council’s Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) system benchmark, TPC-C,

or the decision support benchmark, TPC-H. As shown in Figure 1, they frequently select Red Hat

Enterprise Linux to achieve optimal performance: 33% of TPC-C results and 100% of TPC-H results

published in 2012 used Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the operating system platform.4

Benchmark results are tangible proof that reinforces performance and scalability claims. For

instance, the first TPC-C result ever published for a virtualized environment used Red Hat Enterprise

Linux and its integrated KVM hypervisor to demonstrate remarkable performance with virtualization

when compared with physical servers.5

5redhat.com WHITEPAPER Migrate Oracle Databases from HP-UX to Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Red Hat Enterprise Linux includes scalability features that help to optimize performance, includ-

ing support for increased processor counts and larger memory footprints, improved I/O throughput,

and integrated resource management. The whitepaper “Scaling with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6”

describes many of these features and how they can accelerate throughput and increase scale.6

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is ideal for consolidating Oracle Database workloads. When consolidating

applications on a single server, it’s critical that each workload gets the system resources it needs.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 features control groups, or cgroups, that allow an administrator to

allocate and control resources that any one process, or set of processes, can consume. Thus, it’s

easy to run each database server with well-defined CPU and memory limits while running applica-

tion servers and web servers with their own set of compute, memory, and networking resources. The

system then automatically manages and balances resources for the various processes, delivering

more predictable response times.

SCALE DOWN COST, SCALE UP PERFORMANCE

Migrating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux brings substantial opportunities for cost savings. Legacy

RISC/UNIX systems often carry high maintenance fees and uplifts as they reach end-of-life. New

generation x86 processor and system designs are more power and cooling efficient, leading to

savings in energy-related expenses while meeting corporate mandates for green IT. Consolidating

multiple database workloads can also yield additional efficiencies, reducing the physical footprint,

infrastructure complexity, and administrative burden.

Moving to a Red Hat Enterprise Linux and x86 platform can dramatically cut costs. In an analysis by

Alinean, Inc. (a leading independent ROI consultant), five companies that migrated from RISC/UNIX

systems to x86 systems running Red Hat Enterprise Linux experienced a total cost of ownership

(TCO) savings of up to 61% over 3 years.7

Red Hat is confident that you can substantially reduce TCO when you move Oracle Database work-

loads from HP-UX or other UNIX systems to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. That’s why Red Hat makes

available a TCO tool created by Alinean to predict the economic benefits of a migration. Alinean

independently developed this calculator using information provided by Red Hat as well as pub-

licly available data. The calculator compares projected costs of growing and maintaining a current

UNIX-based server environment with the costs of migrating to a Red Hat Enterprise Linux-based

infrastructure. You can access the tool from the site https://www.redhat.com/resourcelibrary/onli-

netools/tco-calculator, using it to generate an initial estimate of your potential TCO savings.

MEET SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENTS

Red Hat Enterprise Linux supports strategic Oracle applications representing millions of dollars

in financial trades, transactions, business decisions, and commercial operations each day. When

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is combined with the resiliency of today’s x86 servers, you can deploy a

dependable solution for mission-critical applications.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux takes advantage of advanced RAS features in the latest x86 processors,

supporting physical CPU hot swap, hot-add and logical CPU off-lining to minimize unplanned down-

time. Proactive self-healing capabilities in the operating system automatically diagnose and isolate

defective CPUs or memory components, enabling quick recovery from certain hardware and applica-

tion faults.

OPTIMIZE SECURITY AND COMPLIANCE

Since Red Hat Enterprise Linux is open source, it benefits from having an extensive developer

community and numerous security experts who contribute and review the open source code. The

open source model yields a strong code base while supporting innovation of new security features.

Historically, the model has produced security enhancements such as access control features, cryp-

tographic libraries, and trusted utilities for host, network, and application security. Today Red Hat

Enterprise Linux provides comprehensive security tools and a complete security stack, from network

firewall control to SELinux mechanisms for access control enforcement.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux incorporates military-grade security technologies that have allowed the OS

to be certified, including virtualization, at the Common Criteria EAL4+ level for trusted deployments.

(The EAL4+ certification is the highest level of assurance that a standard commercial operating

system can achieve without any special modifications.)

For business-critical Oracle applications, Red Hat’s subscription model is an important element

in maintaining the security of the operating environment. Red Hat proactively releases periodic

software updates and patches to address bugs, provide enhancements, and improve security

mechanisms. In addition, Red Hat engineering — specifically its global Security Response Team—is

dedicated to investigating reported security vulnerabilities, quickly releasing security fixes for all

supported Red Hat products and services if an exposure is discovered.

A testimonial to the robust security of Red Hat Enterprise Linux is its wide deployment in financial

institutions and stock exchanges. NYSE Euronext, which operates exchanges in the U.S. and Europe,

selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux to run its mission-critical global trading platforms. Red Hat

Enterprise Linux platforms at NYSE Euronext handle billions of messages each day, and must deliver

the highest degree of security, reliability, and performance at all times.

MANAGEABILITY

Red Hat offers comprehensive tools to help you manage your datacenter effectively and efficiently.

Red Hat Satellite is an enterprise-wide management framework that automates administrative tasks,

including patching and updates, making your datacenter more secure, manageable, and consistent.

Red Hat Satellite takes advatange of RPM, the well known, built-in package management technol-

ogy used by administrators in the large Red Hat Enterprise Linux installed base. RPM is capable of tracking and resolving software package dependencies for datacenter servers. For Oracle Database

installations, Red Hat Satellite’s ability to resolve software dependencies quickly helps to expedite

time-to-deployment. Once database applications are installed, tuned, and running, Red Hat Satellite

allows careful certification, tracking, and sign-off of any additional software changes, which helps to

increase uptime for your production environment.

We are very security conscious because we have to be. The

operating system is a key part of every server

that we operate and each server must be

secure at all times. We maintain the security

of our systems by relying on the SELinux

features within Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

CLOUD READINESS

As you begin to plan for a migration of your Oracle Database workloads, consider how your infra-

structure will advance towards a cloud-based service delivery model. Whether you choose to pursue

service delivery via an on-premise, hybrid, hosted, or public cloud, Red Hat technologies can help to

ease the shift to cloud-based computing.

A Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform simplifies transitions between physical, virtual, and cloud

service delivery. Many IT departments find migrating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux creates an oppor-

tunity to consolidate and virtualize Oracle workloads, which can optimize resource use and increase

agility. At the same time, virtualizing on Red Hat Enterprise Linux can lay the foundation for cloud

computing. The OS provides ABI/API compatibility from the physical server to the virtual guest, so

that applications are supported whether installed on physical servers or in a virtual host.

Red Hat offers solutions that extend the Red Hat Enterprise Linux product family into cloud envi-

ronments. As the need for cloud-based service delivery evolves, you can deploy cloud-enabled

workloads on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack® Platform, allowing you to transition to an

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) model according to your requirements and timeframes.

Today, most public cloud offerings are built on Linux, and almost all of them implement Red Hat

Enterprise Linux. Red Hat collaborates closely with Amazon EC2, IBM, Fujitsu, and others to deliver

cost-effective and reliable technologies to integrate and deliver public cloud services.

SIMILARITIES TO HP-UX

Red Hat Enterprise Linux shares a number of similarities to HP-UX, making it easier to migrate

Oracle Database workloads to Linux. Many of the tools in Red Hat Enterprise Linux are similar to

tools that HP-UX administrators use, including these examples:

• The Kickstart auto-installer, which is similar to Ignite-UX

• RPM and yum, which have functionality similar to swinstall

• General administrative tools like vmstat, iostat, netstat, route, ifconfig, ping, nlsookup, and

chroot, which have equivalent UNIX counterparts

• SystemTap and top performance analyzers, which are similar to HP Caliper. (Caliper is also avail-

able for Linux.)

These and other similarities allow your staff to be productive quickly with a minimal amount of

retraining, making Red Hat Enterprise Linux a logical choice for HP-UX migration. To prepare your

staff for the transition, Red Hat also offers a broad selection of administrative coursework, includ-

ing courses to achieve the Red Hat Certified Engineer qualification, the defacto industry standard for

Linux administration.

Because of the success of our

migration and Red Hat’s broad ecosystem

of technologies and partners, we are now

considering other Red Hat solutions such as

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, Red Hat

Storage Server, and Red Hat Cloud solutions.

TAKE THE NEXT STEP

In all likelihood, your current HP-UX/Itanium infrastructure has served you well in the past, provid-

ing the robust Oracle Database performance and availability that your mission-critical applications

have required. However, considering that no future releases of Oracle Database will be supported on

HP-UX, the time has come to decide how your database infrastructure will evolve. Planning a migra-

tion to a Linux platform is the logical next step.

Red Hat is the leader in the Linux marketplace, with the highest market share for paid server operat-

ing environments8 and the largest number of contributions to the upstream Linux kernel.9 The Red

Hat Enterprise Linux ecosystem of hardware and software solutions offers you many deployment

options—more than most other commercial Linux distributions. And, as highlighted earlier in this

paper, there are many companies who have already successfully accomplished the migration that

you now anticipate. These businesses have first-hand experience with the benefits that a Red Hat

Enterprise Linux platform brings to Oracle Database applications—lower TCO, solid performance

and scalability, high availability, rigorous security, and ease of management.
