A Programme for enhancement of productivity of Rice

What is SRI?
SRI is an acronym for System of Rice Intensification developed by Fr. Henri de Laulanie in the year 1983 in Madagascar.
SRI is a system rather than a technology because it is not a fix set of practices.
SRI involves a number of specific techniques that are always to be tested and adopted according to the local conditions.

1. Use of young seedlings for transplanting i.e 8-14 days old.
2. Careful transplanting of 1 seedling per hill.
3. Planting at wider spacing (25 X 25 cm)4. Timely weed control.5. Water management (Alternate wetting
and drying)6. Organic Manure application.

The intention of the project was to render technical support and demonstration to the small and marginal farmers about SRI and thereby to attain the sustainable livelihood.
The main objective of the pilot project is
To increase food grain production. Employment generation in accordance with
agricultural policy of Assam

Less seed requirement makes some senses among the small and marginal farmers.
High organic matter in the paddy field because of incorporation of weeds. Crop weed-competition minimized.
Less water requirement
Greener, thicker, stronger, spreading and can be easily differentiated.
![Page 11: Rgvn assam](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022102607/54b9b35c4a795979478b4589/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The key findings of the projects are as follows –
SRI could be a right option for the farmers to increase their production in food grain.
Methods of irrigation are to be improved. There is plenty of water in Assam but management of the available water resource is to be done properly specially in Sali crop.
It would be better for SRI in Boro and early Ahu provided by irrigation facilities, because though we have sufficient rain water we cannot manage it when and where needed in Sali season.
Farmers need some sort of support in terms of bio fertilizer, bio pesticides & their appliances etc.
PROGRAM FINDINGS
![Page 12: Rgvn assam](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022102607/54b9b35c4a795979478b4589/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The pilot project can be termed as positive
Since it is a new practice to the farmers of this region, in the beginning only few persons were found to be interested in adopting SRI.
After the awareness camp many people had given consent but only few of them turned up.
But now it is observed that most of the people where the SRI has been initiated are showing their willingness to adopt SRI under the proper guidance of SRI master trainer.
![Page 13: Rgvn assam](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022102607/54b9b35c4a795979478b4589/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
CHALLENGES for SRI
In Kharif season flood is one of main challenges in Assam in Boro season area is less due to limited irrigation facilities Smalls& Marginal farmers are less interested in putting their
small holding to any new cultivation practices due to apprehension of loss of production.
Major land is under mono-cropping and flood prone. Small and fragmented land holding among the target group Animal Grazing is one of challenges in Boro Season.
