WELCOMEto Robert Gordon University(youll love it here!)

Shona CormackRobert Gordon University Vice-Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor

Congratulations on becoming a Robert Gordon University student!

I was delighted when Ryan Maclean, the Student Association President, asked me to add my words of welcome to this publication. Its a sign of the very constructive partnership we have with our student community.

My colleagues and I are delighted that you have chosen to continue your learning with us. We hope that your time at university is both enjoyable and takes you towards your goals. Our university motto is make the most of all your abilities and our job is to help you make that a reality - both in your academic studies and in the wider opportunities that university life offers.

We know many of you choose Robert Gordon University because of our graduates tremendous success in the employment market. Were confident that by choosing this university youve made an excellent investment in your future. While you are here, Id encourage you to think about what you can do to develop your skills and experience beyond your academic learning. • There is an entire lifestyle that comes with being a student. Although studying is a big part of it, it is also about the overall experience, trying new things, being adventurous and making the most of the opportunities available to you.

The Student Union is all about making your experience the best it can be. Our purpose is to support students by providing a number of different services and opportunities for them to get involved with. Being a student gives you the opportunity to try any number of exciting new things, such as being part of a sports team or society, taking part in student activities or trips, volunteering, raising money for charity, or simply meeting new people! The list is endless, but the bottom line is that we are here to help students, and that is our number one priority.

  • Well, its simple: the Union is run by students, for students. Elections are held each year to vote in a team of student officers. Its their duty to make sure that you get the most out of your experience here. All of this is largely funded by the University, but we also raise profits through our commercial services (our bars, shop, caf etc), which then gets fed right back into helping you!

However, we dont just concentrate solely on providing extracurricular activities, we also focus on being the student voice and representing your wants and needs, not only to the University but on a national basis too.

So, with our full support, we guarantee you a fantastic student experience!

Although studying is a big part of the student lifestyle, its also about trying new things, being adventurous, and making the most of the opportunities available to you. This is where we come in!

So how do we do all of this?

The Union thrives on student involvement, and we are always on the look-out for keen students to get involved with the good work that goes on here. There are countless different opportunities available throughout the year, ranging from becoming a Class Representative or a Faculty Officer, to playing a part in our Freshers Team or taking part in volunteering programs. Choose an area that interests you and help us to help students at Robert Gordon University!

    Want to get involved?

  • What is a Student Officer I hear you ask? (...maybe not, but just go with it!) Essentially our Officers are students who have given their time to help serve you and ensure that you have a good time while studying here at RGU. We have 3 Sabbatical Officers: Myself as President and two Vice Presidents. We are paid, full time officers working in the Student Association for your benefit. There are also 8 part time officers who are carrying out their duties while studying.

I was elected in March by RGU students after studying for 5 years for both my undergraduate Law degree and my postgraduate Masters degree here at Robert Gordon University. My job is to ensure that the Union is being run with the best interests of you the students at the core. It is also my job to help make sure that any issues you may have during your time here are represented effectively. It can be difficult for a solitary student to know what avenue to take when they have concerns, but I am here to make sure that the University hears your voice and acts accordingly. After all, why should you get stressed when I am paid to do it for you!

To sum up, if there is anything that is causing you concern, if you have any problems, or even if you just fancy a chat, drop me a line and Ill do my level best to help you out!

Im Ryan Maclean, and remember: Rule number 76 No excuses, play like a champion!

    RYAN MACLEAN PRESIDENT

Meet Ryan, Tombari & Nicola, your Sabbatical Officers. They were voted in

by your fellow student last year and work full time to represent you on many

levels throughout the University. Let them introduce themselves to you...

  • TOMBARI AADUM VP (UNION & SOCIETIES)Hi there, a very warm welcome to Robert Gordon University, and especially to RGU:Union. My name is Tombari Aadum, Vice President (Union & Societies). It is my responsibility to ensure that you not only have a splendid Freshers Week but also to make your stay in the University memorable. Everything is already in place to ensure you receive the best of entertainment and relaxation whenever you are at the Union. Our doors are wide open to you. Please feel free to speak to me or drop me an email as I am excited to hear your suggestions on how we can make the Union more exciting for you!

To further demonstrate our excitement towards you, the Union does not charge students wishing to use the venue for meetings, fundraisers, birthday parties and societies and sports club meetings. Whatever it is, the Union is there for your use, all you need do is book in advance.

Also it is my duty to oversee and ensure the smooth running of all societies and to encourage the creation of new ones. Have a look at our societies list on page 19, and if nothing takes your fancy, feel free to start up your very own one! Contact myself or the Societies Officer for more information. Finally, it is our job to make sure you get the best out of the Union and to make sure that your voice is all that the University is about. So what are you waiting for? Dont be left out! Its time to make your voice heard. Pop into the office for a chat or drop an email to get your views heard.

Hello and welcome to RGU. I am Nicola Scott your Vice President (Sport) for the forthcoming year. I have studied at RGU for the last 4 years learning the ins and outs of CSI, and have engaged in sports at RGU as part of the cheerleading club - which I was president of last year.

My plans for this year include, organising fixtures and training for sports clubs, as well as organising fundraising events such as the RGU Fashion Show. Other MASSIVE events to be aware of are the RGU v Aberdeen Boat Race, Granite City Challenge and RGU:SPORT Awards Ball. RGU sporting events are not to be missed, they are guaranteed awesome nights out! This year as your Vice President (Sport) I will strive to make the student experience through sport and physical activity the best it can be, resulting in happier, healthier students.

I deal with all of the our sports clubs, so if there are any questions, queries, wonderings, concerns, problems, issues or uncertainties regarding clubs or physical activity, fire them my way! I am contactable via telephone, email, drop in or other forms of communication - for example carrier pigeon.

    NICOLA SCOTT VP (SPORT)

Ryan, Tombari & Nicola all work full time to make sure that you have the best experience here at RGU. So, if you have an issue with a particular area of the University, or perhaps you have an idea that you need help to follow through, get in touch and they will be happy to give you their time.

    student officerswhat do

do?The Student Association has 8 Student

Officers this year. The posts range from

helping to organise the entertainment and

events at the Union to representing the needs

    of our international students.

Much like the Presidents, our Officers are

here to help you and make sure that the

    Student Association represents you correctly.

Unlike the Presidents, they do not take a

sabbatical year and instead carry out their

    roles while continuing their studies.

If you are unhappy with a certain area of

the University or feel that something should

be changed, then get in touch with the

relevant Officer and they will be glad to

    help!

How did the officers actually become officers?

Student elections take place in march every

year. Students who want to boost their CV

and gain some great experience run for the

Officer position which suits them best. It

was your fellow students who elected these

    Officers last year.

So, whether its improving the experience

    for Postrgaduate Students, helping develop

our website, writing articles for Reform

magazine or helping out with the number of

health or disability issues students face, there

will be an Officer who can help with almost

    any problem!

These Officers are here to help improve

your time at University, so make sure you use

them. You can find all their contact details on

    JARGONBUSTER Exec Board

    What is the

and what does it do?The Union is yours! That is the most important thing for students to know.

The big question is how can you REALLY have an effect on how the Union is run? Well as with any organisation (Including theUniversity itself!) we have a structure, and the students are at the top of that structure. But it is the Executive Board that has the say on how the Union develops and makes its decisions. The Executive Board needs you, the students, to let them know your thoughts on the Union, allowing us to keep the students best interests as our primary aim.

If you check out the Constitution (the document which sets the rules by which the Union operates) it states that:

The Executive Board shall be responsible for the day to day management and control of all of the affairs and property of the Association and may exercise the powers of the Association as it thinks fit, save only as otherwise provided by this constitution and in accordance with the Regulations. If you have a serious issue, take it up with the Executive Board! There are currently a number of Elected Executive Officers as well as the Student Association General Manager and an Honorary Treasurer appointed by the University who ultimately form the Executive Board.

So if you think the Union needs to be aware of a serious issue get in touch with Exec!

for you!Our societies range from academic , course related ones such as the Law Society, to charitable ones such as our RAG (Raising And Giving) Society, to the good fun extra curricular ones, like the School Trip Society or the Toast Appreciation Society. No matter what youre into, theres bound to be a society for you. If not, why not start your own? Simply take a hobby or an interest, find some friends to join, apply for a budget and get started! It really is that easy (plus it looks great on your CV!).

Getting involved with your class society can be a great way to bond with your fellow classmates and learn more about your degree subject. Not only will this help you with your University work,

but going the extra mile to learn more about your chosen subject is sure to impress future employers. Class fundraisers could pay for trips away or perhaps even a ball at the end of the year. We have quite a number of course-related societies, including Applied Social Sciences, CTRL Byte (for Computing students), Life Sciences, 5710 (Architecture Society), Nursing & Midwifery, Law, and Business. If your course isnt covered by any of these then you can get together with your classmates and start a society of your own!

For more information on the various societies that we have on offer, speak to our VP Union & Societies. Were always happy to help!

We have more than 30 societies for you to get involved with, whatever your interests.

Nothings set in stone in our society though so new members are welcome to bring fresh ideas for events or charities at any time.

We normally meet twice monthly, Thursday at 8pm on the 1st floor of the Union.

  • RoGUES DRAMA SOCIETYemail: [email protected]: groups.to/roguesyoutube: youtube.com/roguesdrama RoGUES is an acronym for The Robert Gordon University Entertainment Society. Rogues is one of RGUs longest running societies and has been playing the fool for over 15 years. We aim to put on an amateur production show at least once a year and in between shows we hold a number of fundraising events in order to cover the production costs. Over the years the society has gone from strength to strength. From its original stage shows like Dr RGWho and Flash Robert Gordon (which were staged at the Union) to bigger productions like Terry Pratchetts Wyrd Sisters (held at the Aberdeen Arts Centre). RoGUES has even appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival back in 2003! Recently we have expanded into student film projects and we are happy to offer our acting services to the students at Grays School of Art for their coursework projects. The society has a lot to offer its members. If acting is not your forte this is not a problem, as we have a wide range of other areas where you can show off your talent. We invite all kinds of creative and talented individuals to shine in areas such as costume and set design, backstage/tech (lighting & sound) marketing and events management.

  • ClassRepresentatives

Your opinion counts at Robert Gordon University!

Within a few weeks of starting the year, each course should elect a Class Representative. The Reps job is to gather information from class mates on how their course or university life is going.

Class Reps feed this information back to the University and Students Association officers so that any problems can be addressed or positive experiences highlighted. Youll also find out whats going on at RGU first!

All Class Reps will be trained by an organisation called SPARQS (Student Participation in Quality Scotland) on how to be the most effective representative possible. This should mean you will be confident and prepared should you attend any staff-student liaison meetings or be asked to sit on any of the universitys subcommittees.

All trained Reps get a SPARQS certificate so you can put this achievement on your CV!

RGU also recognises student representation achievement at an annual awards ceremonywhere the winning students can receive full university colours. Your time put in as a Repalso counts towards MV awards (see Volunteering page).

For more information on being a Class Rep email [email protected], or, to find out who your Class Rep is, check out the RGU Student Involvement website at rgu.ac.uk/studentinvolve.

    N.U.S.The National Union of Students

    RGU:Union Student Guide 31

Us students have a hard time we have to pay rent, and pay for food and pay for drink.and then pay for more drink AND we have to study! But is it really all that bad? The truth is no, and Ill tell you why. Well firstly those of us from Scotland and Europe dont have to pay to go to Uni - unlike those poor English (insert rude word here!!). So who is behind the fact that we can study in this glorious country for free? Well partially the Scottish Government but there is also NUS Scotland. NUS is the National Union of Students, and since devolution a Scottish sector has been set up totackle issues that students in Scotland face. All sounds a bit boring doesnt it? Well lets see a few examples of how NUS affects you as a student.

As stated above, NUS Scotland is committed to a state- funded education system. It is estimated that, after rent, students have less than 4 a day to live on. Despite RGU:Union selling pints at a mindblowing 1.50 a pop, 4 wont get you very far! So anytime the Scottish Government gets the idea into its head to start charging students for their education, NUS Scotland jumps all over them like a bad rash.

But what about the graduate endowment? Until 2008 Scottish students were sent a bill for a couple of grand after graduating not the best way to celebrate completing your course, but courtesy of NUS, we no longer have this worry.

    Or how about the proposals

in 2008 to increase the age people can buy alcohol in an off-licence to 21? So you cant buy booze to drink in your flat at uni until your 21? Sounds daft, but thanks to NUS who headed up the campaign, those proposals have been laid to rest. But what are they working on right now??

Ever been ripped off by your landlord, keeping money from your flats deposit that should have been returned? NUS Scotland is closer than ever to securing a third party tenancy deposit scheme so that your deposit is kept safe.

Did you know that students are the only group in society that the government legislate to keep their income below the poverty line? You know the guys in tracksuits that hang around outside the jobcentre all day drinking buckfast? Well, the good old Scottish Government give them more money to live on than students no wonder their trainers always look brand new. Thankfully, NUS Scotland are actively campaigning for a minimum income guarantee of 7,000 a year for students.

So thats a snippet of what NUS Scotland do for you, and Ill bet most RGU students dont even know it! But they cant do all this without the support of students themselves, so why not take an active interest in improving things for RGU students! There are a number of ways that you can get involved and they dont have to take up much time you might even find yourself at some great nights out all over the country at no expense!

  • WelfareAdvice

andNo matter how big or small the issue, let us help!

Aberdeen is a diverse city with a population consisting of people from all over the world. Believe it or not, students make up for almost 30% of the Aberdeen population! Thats around 60, 000 students in the city and shire. However, with such a huge number of students, it is important the Union can deal with the wide range ofproblems which students may face.

Just spending one day in theUnions cafe, bars and social areas gives a good indication of the number of different types of students that come to RGU. An incredible mix of cultures, nationalities and faiths lends itself well to a union that is proud to serve, represent and celebrate a diverse student population.

It is vitally important we areaware of our students different backgrounds. Although the Union has worked hard with the University to ensure that there are members of

staff and elected student officers in place to prevent serious issues from arising, we also accept that some circumstances cannot be foreseen. Sometimes as a student you may find yourself experiencing difficulties of one sort or another, academic or personal. The best way to deal with problems and worries is to face them straight on, as soon as they occur, with the

confidence of knowing that your Union is there to support you.

Theres no need to panic or feel on your own. At the Union there are elected student officers here to listen and advise you. We can also direct you to the university staff members, working within specialist areas, who are specifically there to aide students with the various needs that come with university life.

    32 RGU:Union Student Guide

  • ACADEMICIf youre having problemsacademically and you dont know who you can turn to, the Union is here to advise you on the best course of action. Whether youre struggling with your course, feel youre not being treated fairly or youre just not sure about your options, come and pay us a visit!

ACCOMMODATIONWe can help you with a range of issues relating to your housing, whether it be problems with your landlord, disrepair or deposit, and if we cant deal with it, we cancertainly point you in the direction of somebody who can.

HEALTHAlthough we cant offer medical advice, we can help if medical matters are

affecting your University work or other areas within your life. The Union works alongside the University so we can direct you to the many health support services that the University does offer. The Students Union often runs a number of health campaigns throughout the year to ensure that students have up-to-date and accurate information on health issues. The Health Officer also ensures that the union is suitably stocked to provide a variety of free contraception and sexual health products which can be picked up from the Union or sent out to you in the post.

EQUALITY ANDDIVERSITYYour Students Union is here to represent you, and that includes ensuring that we

have officers as well as staff members who can address any diversity issues thatstudents may face. Specific areas of representationare covered by the Unions Disabilities Officer, LGBT(Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans) Officer, International Officer and Mature Students Officer. As members of the National Union of Students Scotland, our students also have access to the advice and support offered by NUS Scotlands Womens Officer and Black Students Officer. NUS UK has a Postgraduate Officer who can offer our students advice in this area.

Whatever advice youre looking for, or maybe youve identified areas of representation that the Union could develop further, the Union is your one stop shop to make the most out of your student experience!
