HMC Chess Championships - Tuesday 13th November 2018

The HMC Chess Championships took place at QEGS in Wakefield on Tuesday 13th November. Mrs Wall accompanied myself and 36 young chess players. The bus set off from Newcastle very early, at 7am. There were two sections, U9 and U11. We had 5 teams in the U11s and 4 in the U9s. There are 4 players per team, and 6 rounds, giving a total possible points haul of 24.

I am delighted to say that the U9 A team won their event. Congratulations to Jinfan , Frankie and Arun who all scored 5/6, and to Kaipo who finished on 4.5. This tournament was very close. QEGS A team also scored 19.5/24. So the tiebreak was the winner of the individual match, but this was a 2-2 draw. The next tie-break was ‘board count.’ This gives more importance to wins on higher boards. As we won on boards 1 and 3 and lost on 2 and 4, we were declared champions.

The B team scored 14.5/24. Well done to Archit, Daylan and Pranav, who all finished on 4 points out of 6. The C team scored 9.5 points, with 4.5 of them coming from Gabriel. The D team finished on 6 points.

The U11 B team won their section with 18.5/24! It may seem to be very surprising that they would outperform the A team over 6 rounds, but there is not much difference in ability between the players. Well done to the winning team of Suyash, Bhuvan (4.5/6), Ray L (6/6) and Naman (6/6). The A team finished 2 points behind on 16.5/24, for third place. Congratulations to Krishen and Prachi who both scored 5/6. The C team finished on 12 points; the D team on 11.5, with Tanish contributing 4; and the E team managed 9.5, with Krishnan scoring 4. Everyone seemed to have a fun day, and a lot was learned. Mr Eggleston

RUGBY RGS vs NSB

Team RGS: Ivan, Nomin, Will, Oliver, Joe, Krishen,

Ben, Arish and Charlie.

The match started off very well for the RGS, with Krishen

charging at NSB’s defence scoring a try, followed by Nomin

and Joe. NSB persevered and they scored a try making the

score 3-1. NSB kept attacking but there was excellence in

the tackling of Krishen, Ben, Arish and Ivan. NSB managed

to find a gap and were charging at the try-line, but Arish and

Ivan took them to the ground. We won the ball and scored

a few more tries coming out as comfortable winners.

Will also delivered great offloads for us to score. It was an

enjoyable day of rugby, well done to everyone

and many thanks to the teachers who

organised this event. Arish (6W)

Please Leave Yoghurt at Home!

We are pleased to see children making healthier

choices with their snacks for break-times and

late room; however, we have noticed that re-

cently there have been several yoghurt spills on

the carpets which are proving difficult to clean.

Due to this, we are asking that all yoghurts and

yoghurt drinks be kept at home.

Many Thanks.

K Wall (Chief Carpet Protector!)

House Gymnastics Competition – Friday 30th November 2018

This is a wonderful event and parents are encouraged to attend. During the morning session, all Junior School pupils will take part in a competition that is both fun and exciting. Children should arrive at school in their PE kit (uniform not required for the day). The afternoon event is for the elite gymnasts. Again, this is a fantastic competition, where world champions perform alongside gymnasts

who have only three months experience in the sport. The competition is brought to a close by a gymnastics display involving our top performers. If you would like to attend this event, please be sure to sign in and collect a visitors pass from either the Junior or Senior School Office.

PUZZLE OF THE WEEK

The Response

On Thursday 15th November 3S visited the war memorial called

‘The Response’ which is outside Civic Centre. Chirag thought it

was amazing that there was a sculpture on one side and further

information on the back. Shaan liked the fact that it is part of

the RGS history too. Hal commented at how clever the sculptor

must have been to carve it. Daylan liked how the angel looked

like she really was flying in the air.

STOP BEING IDLE!

In the Student Council meeting this week, we discussed ‘idling’. Idling is when a car driver leaves the engine running while the car is stationary - for example when parents park their car while dropping off or picking up children. This can be harmful to all of us, as it increases the amount of pollution near our school. It also consumes more fuel. Believe it or not, restarting your car takes less fuel than if you leave it idle! Therefore I would encourage parents not to idle but to turn off their engines near school. This will reduce pollu-tion in the air we breathe, save money and protect the environment. Roshan G (6L)

Children in Need 2018

Last Friday, the whole school went ‘spotty’ for Children in Need! We had a

non-uniform day, as well as a number of stalls, all with the aim of raising as

much money as possible to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Dr Spencer talked in assembly about the good work that Children in Need

does, and we were amazed to raise a fantastic £1009.67! The children

should all be very proud of themselves!

Swimming Gala v Dame Allan’s

Last week, a number of children were involved in the gala against Dame Allan’s School. This was our first home fixture of the year, having travelled down to St Olave’s, York, earlier in the term. There was some impressive swimming from both teams, and some very close races! The evening ended with an overall win to RGS, and we would like to thank Dame Allan’s for coming to take part. We have some pointers to think about at team training! Mrs Baker
