Plaque bearing names of over 250 members of Fort Wayne C C is presented Carl J. Suedhoff, gen. mgr., by members of sponsoring committee. L. to R.: David Cunningham, Donnelly P. McDonald, E. J. Gallmeyer, Carl Suedhoff, C . C . Oberly, Frank E. Bohn, Charles H. Buesching and Ermin P. Ruf.

"From Rags To Riches" or "How To Get Your Club Out of the Red" might well have been the theme of the testimonial banquet honoring Carl Suedhoff's 20 years as sec'y-mgr. of F o r t Wayne (Ind.) CC las t month. For under his guidance tha t is exactly what happened.

When Suedhoff took office in Jan., 1926, the For t Wayne club had consistently shown a loss and its members were paying annual assessments for operat ing expenses.

F U N G U S R E S I S T A N T FESCUE — Despite I technical advances, a lawn that shaves itself has not been found. Approaching that ideal, excelling advance claims in actual trial, is a grass strain that resists drouth and hard usage, that thrives in thin-soil cemeteries with abundant shade, and on sun-baked fairways, tees, airports and lawns, says F. H. Woodruff & Sons, Inc. Test of the new strain, a creeping red fescue introduced by USDA agrostologist, Dr . Harry A. Schoth under the name Ill-a-hee, came last summer when epidemic anthracnose struck the entire red fescue family. That fungus disease, first identified with grapes in France but now widespread in this country, did negligible damage to Ill-a-hee as compared with other creeping red and chewings red fescue strains. W i t h an ample supply of state sealed and certified seed on hand to offset existing short supply of Kentucky bluegrass, the Woodruff organization of Milford, Conn., distributors, say Ill-a-hee may replace bluegrass on acid soils of Northeastern United States.

is in a position permitting him to be in-dependent of the basis on which most club officials rate employees—the basis of ap-pearing successful and backing up that ap-pearance by performance. Too often green-keepers reverse that basis. They perform excellently on their jobs and think that's all that is needed to win for them the high esteem of the membership. It isn't. Then the greater percentage of the members are inclined to think of the greenkeeper—if they think of him at all—about as they think of the janitor of a building in which they live; somebody to cuss out when the heat isn't adequate. At the salaries janitors are paid in metropolitan cities they can stand such mild complaint as union regu-lations permit them to receive. The green-keeper at his salary is seldom so fortunate-ly situated.

The greenkeeper and supply man whose conversation started this piece were right and the thoughtful greenkeepers must ad-mit it. There has to be more of an im-portant "front" put on by most green-keepers holding important jobs at good clubs.

POOR SOIL CONDITIONS BIGGEST CAUSE OF POOR GREENS

The basic cause of bad pu t t i ng greens as summed up by Timely Turf Topics of the USGA green section is the poor physical condition of the soil under ly ing those greens due to improper cons t ruct ion and a poor choice of mater ia ls . Other causes are fau l ty topdress ing mixtures and main-tenance pract ices, and the lack of proper power equipment to correct conditions.

Proper ly buil t green soils allow trouble-f ree main tenance for years . P r o p e r drain-age prevents over-water ing and all of its a t t endan t troubles. Well ae ra ted soils make bet ter use of fert i l izer, cause roots to s t r ike deeper and produce heal thier p l an t s more res is tant to turf enemies.
