If you rememberlast fall, many ofour landscape trees(especially pecans)were hit hard withvery high numbersof webworms. If youlook closely, you canstill see evidence ofthose webs in a fewtrees. If you lookeven closer, youllsee that these treesare putting newleaves on and lookjust fine.
While it can bedifficult to makeblanket statementsthat cover all land-scape situations, this is a good exam-ple of one that willusually hold up:Damage from leaf-chewing insectsrarely causes anylong-term harm towell-establishedtrees and shrubs.
It looks like wemay have a verysimilar situationunfolding thisspring. We are see-ing high popula-tions of tent cater-pillars on a fewplants. Tent cater-pillars are not thesame species aswebworms so largenumbers of onedoes not necessarilymean large num-
bers of the other; itjust worked outthat way this year.
Tent caterpillarsfoods of choice areplums, cherries, crabapples, willowsand birch but theywill feed on manyother species if theyget hungry enough. If you are depend-ing on a fruit cropor are concernedabout the appear-ance of very largenumbers of cater-pillars on yourornamental plants,it would probablybe a good idea toscout now for signsof these pests.
Once the caterpil-lars get theirtents well estab-lished, it is very dif-ficult to controlthem with insecti-cides so early treat-ment is importantfor best success. Ifyou wish to treatafter the tents are
well-formed, youllneed to disrupt thenearly waterprooftent for the prod-ucts to be effective.
Speaking of tentdisruption, be pre-pared for whatyoull find whenyou do this.Hundreds ofinsects can be hid-den in a tent nolarger than the sizeof a cereal bowl. Ifyou are not a fan ofinsects, it can be alittle disconcerting.
There are a num-ber of insecticides(both synthetic andorganic) that willcontrol these pests. As always, pleasebe careful to readthe label and usethe product accord-ing to the instruc-tions. Reading thelabel not only pro-vides the bestopportunity forgood control of thepest, it also pro-
tects you as well asthe environment.
OSU has a verygood Pest E-Alertavailable on thissubject offeringdetailed insecticideinformation as wellas good pho-
tographs to helpwith identification. It is a little bit diffi-cult to find on thewebsite, so contactour office (seebelow) if you wouldlike a copy.

Concealed tank toilets offer smaller footprintsBy Ed Del GrandeTribune News Service
Q: Dear Ed, weare remodeling avery small powderroom and lookingto use every inchof floor space wecan. The old bath-room has an elon-gated toilet, andwe have lookedinto installing a
shorter, round-front toilet. Beforewe purchase thenew toilet, is therean option for a toi-let that uses evenless floor spacethan a round-fronttoilet?
A: First, decide onthe budget and scopeof your powder roomremodeling job. Ifyoure looking for the
easiest way to installa smaller toilet inplace of your elongat-ed toilet, the round-front toilet can beyour best choice.
In most cases, astandard round-fronttoilet should fit thesame water anddrain connections asa standard elongatedtoilet. However, ifyou have to save
maximum space inyour new powderroom and are willingto rough-in com-pletely new plumb-ing, a wall-hung con-cealed tank toiletcan give you theminimum footprint.Since the toilet tankis concealed insidethe wall in back ofthe toilet, you canpick up about 10
inches of floor spaceover standard toilets. Also, because its awall-hung toilet, youll have extra footspace under the toi-let.
Bottom line: Ifyoure really upagainst the wall tosave the most space, look into a concealedtank wall-hung toi-let.

In small spaces, its important thateach piece of furni-ture functions for avariety of uses. When youre choos-ing a table, makesure its a drop-leafso that you canexpand it for din-ner parties. Whenguests arentaround, you canfold down the pan-els and use thetable as a desk orvanity.
2. AFFORD-ABLE ART
Nothing will addpersonality andwarmth to yourspace like framedartwork. Trysources likePurePhoto,Art.com, Etsy andeBay to find origi-nal, unique pieces.Keep your eyesopen at flea mar-kets and yard salesfor that one printthat will add char-acter and life toyour new space. Asanother option,
take one of yourfavorite photos to acopy shop to beenlarged and print-ed on photo paper.Pop it in an inex-pensive frame fromIKEA and youreset.

desktop topiary ora potted fiddle-leaffig, plants will addlife to your newapartment, makingyour new space feellike a home. Tokeep the plantalive and thriving, select one thatsbased on theamount of care itrequires _ andwhat youll realisti-cally be able tomaintain.
4. BOOK-SHELVES
A bookshelf isntjust functional; itcan also be utilizedto display art andsmall tchotchkes. In a pinch, you canalso place anadjustable shelf byyour bedside so itcan function as anightstand.
5. A PIECE
WITH HISTORYWhether its
handed down fromyour parents (orgrandparents) orscored at a localflea market, a piecewith some age andpatina will bring asense of historyand sophisticationto your new space.Small decorativeaccessories with astory or back-ground add layersand dimension toeven the most mod-est abodes.
6. NEUTRALUPHOLSTERY
Your taste ininterior styles anddesign eras is like-ly to change overthe years. If yourejust starting out,its wise to investin a piece of neu-tral upholsterythat will stand thetest of time. By
switching out deco-rative pillows andthrows, your sofaor lounge chair willbe able to easilyadapt to yourchanging tastes.
7. A GREATTABLE LAMP

When a clienttells me theyreready to buy ahome, I believe itsmy job as a lenderto help guide themtoward a decisionthat is best for theirfinancial well-being,even if it meanssuggesting theyhold off on purchas-ing.
Owning a homecan be a wonderfulbenefit, but thereare certain situa-tions when it maynot be in your bestinterest. Here aresome reasons toconsider whenweighing youroptions to buy.
No down pay-ment. Yes, there area few loan optionswhich offer downpayment assistantor zero percentdown, but keep inmind the fees forthese options. Ingeneral, most loanswithout a 20 per-cent down paymentrequire some type ofmortgage insurance(PMI), which willincrease your over-all cost of homeown-ership.
Uncertain person-al situations. Areyou thinking of ajob change in thenear future? Willyour mortgage pay-ment be dependenton two householdincomes? Are youplanning to have ababy? Will there bedaycare expenses? Before making thehuge decision tobuy a home, consid-er the dynamics ofyour personal lifeand have an emer-
gency plan for mak-ing payments dur-ing major lifechanges.
Constantly travel-ing. Homes requireupkeep and moni-toring. Some of myclients who travel alot for work tell methey want to pur-chase a condo orresidence with ahome owners asso-ciation (HOA) thatwill maintain theproperty. Thats allwell and good aslong as you fullyunderstand theextra fees associat-ed with HOAs andproperty mainte-nance, in additionto your regularmonthly mortgagepayment.
Home upkeep.Homeownershiphas costs beyond amortgage payment.Appliances fail, roofs may have tobe replaced, yardsneed to be main-tained and internaland external homerepairs may berequired. Do youhave the money oran emergency fundin place to help payfor home upkeepand improvements?
Credit. Your cred-it score does havean impact on yourmortgage loan. Ifyoure hoping to
buy a home in thenear future, talkwith a lender nowand ask about thecost associated withyour current score
versus how it mayadjust with a higherscore. Your lendercan also share ideason how you may beable to improveyour credit score.
Everyone is doingit. When I visit afriends new home, Iadmit I get the itchto move. Personalfinancial desiresaside, if its a sell-ers market, itmight pay to wait tobuy a home. If your
market is producingmultiple offers onhomes, they may beselling for top dol-lar. Waiting for thetide to change maybring opportunitiesto purchase thehome you want atbelow-market value.
Buying a home isa big decision, pos-sibly one of thebiggest financialdecisions of yourlife. Take the timeto consider your
personal and finan-cial situation aswell as market con-ditions before tak-ing the next step tobuy. It may possiblysave you money inthe long run.

Dear Debbie:We have pur-chased an olderhome, a realfixer-upper. Wewill be renovat-ing the kitchenin a few years, but for now whatwould you sug-gest we do withthe drab woodcabinetry? -- Pat
Dear Pat: Asmall kitchen canbe instantly reno-vated at little costwith paint. Here isa great fix withouthaving to replacethe cabinets.Choose a color thathas a light, brightquality. This yearscolor trends showpastel shades ofblue that are calmand reflective. These blues com-bine with whites,or more vibrantshades, to createthe right mood foryou. For this smallapartmentkitchen, I chose arobins egg blue, which has touchesof blue and greenreminiscent of aquiet sea. Coloruniformity pre-vents a space fromlooking too choppy,so I extended thesandy beige wallpaint to cover theceiling. The gentlepairing of pastelshades isenlivened by awhite tile back-splash and whiteappliances. Tomake an ordinarytile look special, Iapplied turquoisegrout that links to
the cabinetry andadds a neat designdetail.
To give the cabi-nets a professionalfinish, take thetime to remove allthe doors andhardware. Repairany holes or crackswith wood filler.Sand smooth. Ifthe cabinets have acoat of varnish, sand to rough upthe surface, andthen apply a high-hide paint primerdesigned for slip-pery surfaces.Allow the primer todry completelybefore painting.
The glossier thepaint sheen youapply, the easier itis to clean the sur-face. For a busykitchen, semi-glossis the most practi-cal, but I used alow-luster paintand was happywith the results. The painted sur-face does wipeclean easily, andthe low-luster addsa feeling of space.
The originalvinyl kitchen floorwas in very poorshape, so Ireplaced it with arubber floor.Associated more
with commercialuse in hospitalsand gymnasiums, arubber floor is verycomfortable under-foot, nonslip, hygienic andextremely durable. It is available in arange of shadesand textures, butsmooth is best forthe kitchen. Thisfloor has the lookof slate but is lesscostly, and moreforgiving in akitchen.
** *Dear Debbie: I
remember seeingan episode of oneof your decorat-ing shows whereyou created acollage of pic-tures and flow-ers to update thetop of a coffeetable. What didyou apply overthe pictures sothat they stayed
in place? It wasa clear liquid. Thanks for yourclever ideas. --Tara
Dear Tara: Theproduct you aredescribing is epoxyvarnish. It is apour-on epoxy fin-ish that is equal to60 coats of regularvarnish. Its popu-lar for commercialspaces, such asrestaurant barcounters. Epoxyvarnish is alsoused in arts andcrafts projects toembed pictures, theater, plane andtrain tickets, flower petals andother memorabiliathat you choose todisplay on yourtabletop. It can be
applied to trays, ceramics, oil paintand most othermaterials, to pro-duce a smooth,high-gloss finishthat is waterproofand durable. Check
your hardwarestore, arts andcrafts store or theweb to find theproduct that isright for your pro-ject. It will comewith instructions.

Whats standard procedure for tile regrout?By Angie HicksAngies List
Dear Angie: Ihired a contractor toacid wash, regroutand seal my bath-room tile. He did notremove the old grout_ merely spongedover a new groutcoating. He says thisis standard operat-ing procedure, as wedid not contract forold grout removal. Isthis true, or did Ijust get ripped off?
_ Angela Katz,Philadelphia
Dear Angela:Unfortunately, thereare a number of con-tractors who regrouttile this way, eventhough it is not arecommended orreliable solution.
People in the indus-try refer to this prac-tice as skim coat-ing. Its a way ofmaking the arealook better withoutactually fixing it,and the new groutwill wear off oncethe area is used.
While you canleave a small portionof the old grout, youneed to remove amajority of it. Thatway, theres enoughroom for the new tilegrout to bond to thesides not the top of the tile. Even ifthe grout is worndown in areas, youneed someone toremove it beforeapplying new grout.
Luckily, regrout-ing tile is a practiceyou shouldnt have
to do often. If youtake care of andclean your tile groutregularly, you shouldonly have to replaceit every 12 to 15years. Lesser qualityjobs or failure tocare for the groutmay lead to the needfor replacementevery eight to 10years.
To get the maxi-mum amount oftime between groutreplacement, be sureto care for it proper-ly.
Never use bleach, ammonia or acid-based cleaners ongrout. Shower clean-ers that indicate youshould spray thecleaner on and leaveit there also damagegrout long-term. Use
a neutral pH cleanerif you want to getmore life out of yourgrout.
You should alsomake sure to removeany excess moisturefrom the room, asthat can damagegrout. Squeegeeyour shower afteruse, and make sureto use exhaust fansto remove moisture.
When it comes toregrouting tile, knowwhat it should cost.Low-priced esti-mates may indicatethe contractor does-nt offer old groutremoval as part ofthe job.
Non-sanded grouttypically costsbetween $5 and $6per square foot forremoval and replace-
ment. Sanded grout, which would be usedfor any joints with aone-eighth inch gapor larger, costs $6 to$8 per square foot.Cost can varydepending on thesize of the area, thetype of tile used orthe difficulty of thejob.
Keep in mind thatwhoever is replacingyour grout shouldalso be placing 100percent siliconecaulk in cornerjoints and aroundtubs and showerbasins. This step isimportant, becausegrout has no flexibil-ity. If theres anymovement betweena tile and a cornerjoint, grout willcrack.

Many of the victimsof deadly mesothe-lioma worked in theconstruction industry.Their survivors stillhave legal rights topursue compensationfor the loss of theirloved one.
DEAR MR.MYERS: Severalmonths ago, youwrote aboutmesothelioma. Myfather worked forthe same homebuilder for 45years, but retiredshortly before hewas diagnosedwith the disease. He filed a personal-injury lawsuitagainst the builderand the companythat manufacturedthe asbestos thatmade him sick, butdied before hiscase ever went totrial. My mother isstill in their long-time home andwants to staythere, but themortgage pay-ments and dadshospital bills aremaking it impossi-ble. What can wedo? Can we contin-ue with the law-suit?
ANSWER: First, Iam deeply saddenedfor the loss of yourfather. An estimated48,000 men andwoman have diedfrom mesothelioma,an incurable type ofcancer linked to theasbestos that wascommonly used byworkers in the con-struction industry, the ship-buildingbusiness or U.S.Navy personnel whospent months or evenyears aboard anasbestos-laden vessel
during World War II.About 4,500 cases
of mesothelioma arediagnosed each yearin the U.S., accordingto the MesotheliomaCancer Alliance. Therelatively rare canceris caused by inhalingthe fibers released bythe poisonousasbestos, whichattacks the mem-brane lining of thelungs and abdomen.Although theres noknown cure for thedisease, surgery orchemotherapy treat-ments can help.
If theres any goodnews to be found inthis answer, it is thatyes, your mom andeven you can likelyresubmit the lawsuitto recover your latefathers hospital billsand receive punitive(money) damages. Ifyou do so, though, it
will become a wrong-ful-death claim ratherthan the personal-injury lawsuit thatyour dad filed beforehe passed away.
Your local office ofthe American BarAssociation probablycan refer you to anexperienced attorneywho has handledasbestos-related law-suits or other claimsbefore. There also areseveral organizationsthat provide thenames and contactinformation of thesespecialized lawyerson the Internet.
If you decide to filesuit, it would be bet-ter to do it soonerrather than later.Though it can takeseveral years or evendecades for mesothe-lioma to presentitself, all 50 states settime limits on when
a suit can be filed. Some states allow upto five years after thedisease is first diag-nosed by a doctor, butothers allow as few as365 days.
As I wrote in thatprevious column, sev-eral companies thatmanufacturedasbestos or productsthat contained it filedfor bankruptcy longago after legal claimsagainst them soared. But judges andCongress finally gotwise to this ploy, andstarted demandingthat each companyestablish a trust fundto help pay for futureclaims before theirbankruptcy plancould be approved.
Filing a claimagainst these trustscan be much cheaper, and lead to a resolu-
tion much sooner, than filing a full-blown lawsuit. Again, you definitely shouldconsult an attorney toweigh your options.
* * *REAL ESTATE
TRIVIA: Americanhomeowners andbusinesses spend acombined 6 billionhours each year toprepare theirincome-taxreturns, the U.S.government says.Thats roughly theequivalent of what3 million full-timeworkers combinedspend on their jobsannually.
* * *DEAR MR.
MYERS: We own athree-bedroomhome, but it hasonly one bathroomthat is shared by
me, my husbandand our three kids.We want to selllater this year or inearly 2017. Would itmake sense to adda second bathroomto increase ourhomes resalevalue?
ANSWER:Probably not. Thoughadding a second bath-room would certainlymake your familyshome life a lot morecomfortable, a newreport says youllrecoup barely half thecost of the additionwhen you eventuallysell.
The report wasissued jointly by theNational Associationof Realtors (www.real-tor.org) and theNational Associationof the RemodelingIndustry
(www.nari.org). Theypolled real estate prosand consumers alike.
The average cost ofadding a bathroom is$50,000, the studysays, but the typicalhomeowner shouldexpect to recover only52 percent of thatconstruction expensewhen the property issold. Thats the worstreturn-on-investmentthat a home sellercan expect among 20typical improvementsthat owners canmake, the reportfound.
Other big losersincluded adding amaster bedroom suite(boosting resale valueby just 53 percent ofthe average $112,500construction cost) andrenovating a closet atthe typical $3,500charge (57 percent).

Wherever men mined inthe desert, necessity becamethe mother of a curious recy-cling project. In this aridwestern land of few trees, everything was hauled in bymule trains, including milledlumber. Building anythingwas exorbitantly expensive, yet prospective miners need-ed a home. Among the mostcommon castoffs were emptysaloon bottles that masonsstacked with plaster intowalls that allowed naturallighting within these darkrooms. To this day these curi-ous homes still stand in ghosttowns to inspire a whole newcentury of creative masonswho are also keen on recy-cling.
Glass bottles are beautiful, colorful and amazingly adapt-able to repurposing. The glassbottle that is making a come-back all over America as afree building material is gen-erating a creative new look in
garden masonry.Landscape gardeners Gino
Dreese and Troy Williamsbegan implementing theirown brand of bottle construc-tion at their getaway in theCalifornia desert. Their foundrock and desert artifact crazyquilt masonry gradually con-tained more and more glassbottles over the years untileventually they built upenough supply to attemptmore ambitious projects. These included whole walls oftheir home to catch the sunas it sets over the high desert. These bottle walls arent uni-form like the miners, butdesigned for a constellation oflight, color and shapes thatrival stained glass windows.
For the rest of us, theirwork demonstrates a range ofgreat ideas for the creativegardener looking for a one-of-a-kind element in the land-scape. The blending of bottlesand mortar involves very sim-ple materials that may beconfigured in many differentways to create green con-
structed elements. YouTube isfull of videos that demon-strate the how-to of buildingwith bottles in different cli-mates.
In the landscapes createdby these creative masons arecharming smaller details thatgive these gardens a trulyunique look.
PLANTER WALLA low curb or slightly taller
planter wall can result in areally neat, one-of-a-kinddetail on patio or in the gar-den. The wall may be con-structed within an existingplanter or freestanding.
BENCH OR SEATWALLThis is a freestanding bottle
wall designed with a top sur-face to serve as a seatingarea. Often bottle walls aretopped with Arizona flagstoneto give them a rustic feel.Others can be topped with asalvaged granite or marblecounter top or milled slab for
a tidy modern look.
GATEWAY PANELSA gate becomes a gateway
when its flanked by fences orwalls. These masons haveturned the flanking walls intoartistic opportunities to bringlight to an entry. It alsoallows a vintage door or gateto be featured within a glit-tering field to provide plentyof eye candy while visitorswait for you to answer thebell.
The beauty of working withbottles is the potential trans-parency, which is often bestwhen oriented toward thewest to catch the setting sun.To capture a style, know thatperfectly spaced identical bot-tles are more urban andupscale. Blending a widerange of bottle colors suggestsmore festive digs. What theMRR guys do best is to bringin even more glass, which istheir signature style.
Over time, as they began
using very large bottles suchas vintage water containers, these can be integrated intothe bottle stacking system tocreate see-through windows.Slag glass, a bluish byproductof glass recycling also plays abig role in these projectswhere they want more lightto come through to reflect skybeyond.
While many bottle wallmakers today are working inthe simplest way to createhandmade housing, Gino andTroy have maintained thatwhimsical Route 66 approachwith their work around PalmSprings.
The bottle walls created bythese originators of thisground breaking style chal-lenge others who share theirvision. Let them inspireeveryone to try somethingnew this year by learning bot-tle building. All thats neededis to save your wine andliquor bottles until there areenough for your first glasswall creation.

In the spring, when everything isfresh and new, I getan irrepressibleurge to indulge innew decorating pro-jects, giving someof the tired treat-ments in my homesome much-neededenergy. Want tohave some fun mix-ing things up inyour home?Sometimes the sim-plest changes, likeadding an unex-pected new detail, can not only give aspace a brand-newvibe, it can makeyou fall in lovewith your home allover again.
Every one of usis unique when itcomes to our deco-rating style. And Ithink most of usfall on a continuum
somewherebetween traditionaland contemporary, soft tones and bril-liant color, mutedtextures and boldpatterns. Whateveryour sweet spot is,consider giving anarea in your homea little shakeup byadding somethingto your decor thatskind of daring. Here are someways to hit therefresh button.
CHANGE OUTA CHAIR
When I designrooms, I like to adda chair or two thatgive the space a zip
of energy. It couldbe an unexpectedfurniture design, like a reinventedapproach to a time-less classic, such asthe interesting newwingbacks silhou-ettes that are so bigright now. Or, itcould be covering achair in an accentfabric that pushesthe envelope just abit.
BUMP UP THELOOK OF YOURBED
So many of ussave our bedroomsfor last when wedecorate. Or, wenever get around to
designing a killerbed treatment atall. Maybe its timefor you to showsome love for theroom in your homethat fills you upnight after night.
Since your bed-room is a privatespace, out of viewto visitors, its anideal lab to experi-ment with zippycolors and patterns.Do you want to be adaredevil? If so,heres a fun newbed to inspire you.We brought togeth-er two heavyweightchampions thatpack a place with
irrepressible joy:pink and orange. When you use pat-terns with thismuch personality, its important tobalance them withplenty of cool-and-calm neutrals, likewe did with ourwhite accent pil-lows and snowywhite bedding.
If you like acalmer palette onyour bed, add somepersonality and piz-zazz by mixing pat-terns in quieter col-ors.
MAKE A FEWARTFULIMPROVE-
MENTS ONYOUR WALLS
What kind of art-work you have andhow its displayedcan have a dramat-ic impact on theoverall look andfeel of your room.Im not kidding art is that impor-tant for giving aroom personalityand passion. Artfinishes a spacewith an exclama-tion point.
A trend Im lov-ing in the designworld now is toshowcase a huge, almost oversizedpiece of art above
your sofa or a side-board. Whetherthey are modern ortraditional, thesebig statementpieces make you doa double take.
If traditional artis your bliss, youcan still make a bigstatement on yourwalls. Try hangingyour artwork ininteresting group-ings, like grids thatstretch from theground to ceiling.Or, create a mon-tage of variedpieces, where youmix together worksin a variety of sizesand shapes.
