Early BattlesWho- Continental Army vs. British Army

What- Who can win early battles and gain momentum

Where- Northern Colonies- MA, NY, NJ, PA

When- 1776

Importance- British got serious about the war and sent huge amount of troops and supplies to America, this began a year of constant defeats for Washington and the Continentals.

Crossing the DelawareWho- George Washington and Continental Army

What- Washington’s plan was to cross the Delaware in the middle of the night and attack the Hessians

Where- Trenton, NJ

When- December 25th, 1776

Importance- Continental Army is low on supplies and food while being in a constant retreat, everyone thought that they were done and about to give up. Washington comes up with a surprise plan!

Trenton / PrincetonWho- Washington and the Continental Army

What- Continental Army goes on the offense to surprise attack the German Hessians

Where- Trenton / Princeton NJ on Delaware River

When- December 25/26th, 1776

Importance- Washington’s surprise crossing of the Delaware River works! They then go on the offensive and defeat the Hessians at Trenton, then moves to Princeton. British leave New Jersey for rest of the war. Americans get supplies, confidence, re-enlistments!

SaratogaWho- Continental Army and General Gates

What- Battle of Saratoga

Where- New York

When- October 17th, 1777

Importance- British tried to attack from the North and South but their timing was off. American General Gates uses guerilla warfare, British surrender over 5000 troops and give up supplies the Continentals needed. This leads to the French and Spanish believing that the Americans had a chance and they decided to become allies!

Valley ForgeWho- George Washington, Continental Army

What- Continentals were forced out of Philadelphia and spent a miserable winter outside in the cold

Where- Valley Forge, Pennsylvania

When- Late in 1777

Importance- Continentals had awful conditions with few supplies, not enough food, improper winter clothing. 10-20% of the soldiers died from starvation, cold, disease

Fill out the last page in the DBQ Packet:-OK to write in packet- don’t need notebook paper-Blank page on back of packet if you need more room-Include at least 4-5 complete sentences per paragraph-Include specific examples and details-Explain which document or source information is from-Example: “In document A which was a chart of illnesses and deaths at Valley Forge, it said almost 50% of the soldiers were sick by February 1778. This makes me think…..”-Due tomorrow at the beginning of class- will be handed in for a grade!

What-Try to move the war to the south to get more loyalist support

Where- South Carolina / Southern States

When- 1780

Importance- British strategy to move the war south, Lord Dunmore issues proclamation freeing the slaves if they fight for British, Huge British victory in European style battle at Camden

Swamp Fox / Guerilla WarfareWho- Francis Marion (AKA - The Swamp Fox)

What- Uses Guerilla Warfare tactics

Where- All throughout the South

When- 1780-1781

Importance- Kept the British army occupied chasing him around the South wasting a lot of the British’s time and money not allowing them to be useful in other spots throughout the coloniesAlso beware of

the Swamp OX!!

YorktownWho- French Marquis De Lafayette, British General Cornwallis, George Washington

What- Final major battle of the Revolution

Where- Yorktown, Virginia

When- September-October 1781

Importance- Cornwallis set up camp on a peninsula, Washington and Americans surround them on some sides, French army and navy surrounds them on other sides. Cornwallis had to eventually surrender 8,000 soldiers effectively ending the war.

Treaty of Paris 1783Who- Ben Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, Henry Laurens

What- meeting between U.S. and British representatives

Where- Paris, France

When- 1783

Importance- Document officially recognizing the United States as free and

Independent- we get territory all the way West to Mississippi River
