We have all studied the historyof warfare at school; battles forindependence, heroic struggles, naval combat, conqueringcrusades, rebellions and so forth.

But the damage inflicted is notspoken of; the families destroyed, the children orphaned, the dead, separated loved ones, or theeconomic costs incurred in suchenterprises. At a certain point

war becomes an industry, filledwith backers seeking the bestdeal; private interests, extremistideologies, political factions.

The only way to avoid war is toarrive at a sensible agreement, but this is not always possible.Differences between groupsoften make this impossible andin the end one side or anotherresorts to brute force to imposean idea.

I see a more evolved future in

which frontiers will no longerexist, in which religions will putaside their intolerance, and inwhich wealth will be shared

equally among all. We may bevery far from such a moment, butchange will begin to occur whenwe humans come together todecide what is best for us all.

This edition features a gallery ofpetitions by artists from all overthe world, who are calling for onething; they are calling for an endto war and the beginning of anera of peace.

Our special guests areGreg Marinovich, a Pulitzerprizewinning photojournalist, andLasse Hoile, a consummate visualartist of chaos.

How did you get started in

    photography?

As a curiosity, and a way to document

stuff around me. I had no intention

of being a photographer for a living.

    If you hadnt become a

    photographer, what else

might you have done for aliving?

    Writer perhaps. carpenter maybe,

    botanist perhaps.

    What impact on your life

    and career did winning

    the Pulitzer price for

    photography have?

    Made a massive difference and

I was able to travel the world on

    assignment.

As one of the m ost intrepid

    war photographers in the

    world, how often have you

    felt close to death?

    Way too often to count.

    Photographing the

    casualties of war is a

    very tough job, and

    extremely polemical in

    ethical and moral terms.

    What is your opinion of

    the criticisms directed at

    photojournalism?

Too much is made of the people who

cover the news, quite honestly. and

    photojournalists range from very

ethical and moral to absolute swine.

    The current theme of

    Revolutionart is STOP

    WAR. Many artists from

all over the world have lent

    their voices to this subject.

Having been at the center of

    dozens of conicts, do you

    think that the world can

    reasonably hope to nd an

alternative to war a nd all its

    consequences?

I would like to think so, but the cynic

    in me says no...

    experimentation artisticand stimulating personal?

I think all, as they say its onlythe imagination that sets thelimit really. You have to be ableto push the limits and try outnew things, I think thats doablein almost all art forms, I certainlylike to try and see what I can dowith photography and makinglm, to experiment with it. Which

usual means I end up breakingthe bloody things ! But I thinkthere are many approaches andtheres certainly many dierenttypes of lm, paper, camera, gizmos you can stick on a camerato obtain dierent kinds of visualand interesting outcomes and sofourth.

  • 8/3/2019 Revolution Art Issue 33b

    96/152

But if I was to chose betweentaking pictures and making lmand to answer the question itwould in the lm area you willprobably get a more stimulatingpersonal in the sense you havemore people involved in a certaingiven projects, you have to co-oporate with lots of individuals indierent areas from production tonal product and thats certainly alearning experience ever time - forme at least ! I have great love forphotography and lm but takingpix is the most liberating for me asthats my own kinda thing and Ijust love that medium.

    In relation to your

In relation to yourwork for rock bands(Porcupine Tree, Steven

Wilson, Opeth, etc.)How is the process ofcreation for the art ofcover and book, whichcombines with the musicso incredibly forming awhole?

Well, I kinda just do what I do,sometimes I might have taken

a bunch of pix before hand andthey go yes or no but then wediscuss what direction theywant to go, I listen to theirideas and songs and take itfrom there really, go and shot1000s of pix before we nail it !

What represents themusic in your life andhow much influence

    your work?

Music is a huge part of my lifeand always has been, I cantlive without it ! Love all youcan throw at me (except forlounge or R&B music)

directed by you. Can yousynthesize how was thatexperience?

It was a great experience, spendsome time with really goodfriends, traveling around, meetingnew interesting people andhaving good discussions andwhat not, down side was that wegot no really support from lmfunds so everything was a labourof love, it was even without anygrants, but it would have been

nice with we a bigger budget. And of course siing on yourass for over a half year editingdoes hurt after a while, but it allpaid o nicely in the end got toplay festivals around the worldwith great success. I hope peoplewill enjoy it as much as we didmaking it. It has a good messagefor all music loving people in theworld. Very proud of that.

Strange beauty anddeterioration can be seenin Insurgentes. What

    inspiration produces thisin yourself?

Life ! Its all around us, but I guessI nd it interesting and beautifulin many ways. I have always beenfascinated with old things andalways drawn my inspirationfrom that, I dont know whyreally, just always like old rustythings, pictures, used stu.Theres so many amazing thingsyou can nd from 100+ yearsago...although I never have cashto buy it ha ha.

Steven Wilson says that thesad music melancholic and

sad music, melancholic anddepressing is paradoxicallyvery stimulating (makes

us live experiences incommon). Is it also for youand your art?

Yes very much so, also makesthe most interesting art. I canonly say its very very true thatsentiment. Contrived happymusic really does make oneextremely depressed and annoyedand I think many car accidents

happen on that accord too ! Tailgating idiots always have thathigh happy bass thumbing crapmusic playing, really frustrating, everyone would drive beer ifsay, they listened to Talk Talk !

  • 8/3/2019 Revolution Art Issue 33b

    102/152

How much influence thespontaneity and the postproduction on your art?

Much of how I get stu done ismore or less spontaneous, whenI get the idea I just have to do it...some things I have to wait doingif it involves more things andpeople, but generally I like to dothings right away, Im much too

impatient. Post production not somuch, I try and do most on thespot. I always wanted to paint butcant so I have to make pictureslook how I wanted to paint animage.

I read that youre makinga big book of photography, when well have thepleasure to enjoy?

  • 8/3/2019 Revolution Art Issue 33b

    103/152

Where ? ha ha...well, manyhave asked me but its much too

expensive to do books and notsure how many would actuallybuy it, I still prey obscurereally...but would love to do one, would have no problem in llinga couple of books by now. Maybesome day perhaps.

The present issue in thisedition of the magazine

is stop war, what is yourvision on the proposal?

No one wants or likes wars, somesay they are necessary but I neverunderstood that, we are all equal,we get born the same way andwe all die, we all have friends

and families neighbors, all haveto eat drink and take a dump, some have dierent views orreligion but the place is small sowe just have to get along. We areprobably going to ruin it all a fewtimes before it sinks in that waronly leads to bad shit for ages...

instead of using all that energy toget to know each other, on scienceand exploration, art, music andusing precious time on each otherand the ones we love, everythingelse and otherwise is bullshit...Iwish people who create and arebehind these things would growup some day.

A 6.3 minute thrill ride of charged symbolism

and cool sexuality a sly melodrama of

    masculine/feminine interplay. Through it, the

tough and sultry women of Brian M. Viveros

paintings come alive in this stylized short that

he and Eriijk Rssler produced and directed.

Artists from the PORNO CREW connected

together and created this animated story

from PORNO VILLA - the place where they

all live and create. The story is meant to

introduce their environment and the liberty

    of art.
