LA BRU JU LAEn 1983, la provincia de Corrientes creó la Reserva Natural Provincial del Iberá convir-tiendo a este santuario de biodiversidad en la reserva más extensa del país. Basta decir que es el segundo humedal más grande de Sudamérica y uno de los más importantes del mundo. Compuesto por arroyos, esteros, bañados y más de 60 lagunas, es el hábitat de 300 especies de aves, yacarés, carpin-chos, lobitos de río y ciervos de los pantanos. Su rol en los procesos hidrológicos es vital y también, la Laguna Iberá, junto a la Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, son un punto turístico úni-co para realizar avistajes. El pueblo está ubi-cado en el centro-este de la provincia, a 115 km de la localidad correntina de Mercedes y 800 de la ciudad de Buenos Aires.

THE COMPASSIn 1983, the province of Corrientes created the Iberá Natural Provincial Reserve, and this sanctuary of bio-diversity became the most extensive reserve in the country. It is also the second largest wetlands in South América. Including streams, marshes, and more than 60 lagoons, it is the habitat for 300 species of birds, caiman, neotropical otters, and marsh deer. Its role in hydrological processes is vital and, also, the Iberá Lagoon, along with the Carlos Pellegrini colony, are unique tourist attractions for natural approaches. The town is in the center-east of the province, 115 km from the city of Mercedes in Corrientes and 800 km. from the city of Buenos Aires.

“Iberá nos va a regalar al menos un día de sol”, rogábamos al pronóstico meteorológico esquivo, deseando ver de cerca la biodiversidad prome-tida. Cruzábamos los dedos pero los truenos se ensañaban con el cielo plomizo de la Colonia Carlos Pellegrini mientras saciábamos la ansie-dad con un delicioso quibebe (comida típica a base de zapallo y queso), la lluvia ahondaba los charcos y hasta nos acostumbramos a su grata música sobre el techo de la galería de la posada. Era un miércoles por la noche cuando llegamos y el sol se hizo esperar hasta el sábado. Fue apenas un atisbo, unos rayitos tímidos que nos regocijaron para luego volver a nublarse a la hora de salir en la lancha. Sin embargo, los primeros animales, escondidos por tantos días ingratos, se dejaron observar mansos y tranquilos, curiosos, increíbles. Nos cansamos de tomar fotos, una tras otra, buscando la mejor de las postales de los Esteros del Iberá para compartirla con ustedes en esta tapa. Pero no fue sino el último día de nuestra estadía en el que encontramos el escena-rio perfecto: pura luz y cientos de ciervos de los pantanos, carpinchos con pajaritos en el lomo, yacarés, monos carayá, el canto de los pájaros renacido en un universo alucinante. La riqueza de un ecosistema no se conoce real-mente hasta que se puede palpar y la ilusión no sólo se cumplió, sino que se acrecentó con la comprobación. El humedal y su magia nos regalaron un día de sol y fue suficiente para en-tusiasmarnos, divertirnos y emocionarnos. Y en la previa, con el encanto de la colonia, hasta la lluvia nos cayó simpática.

“Iberá will give us at least one sunny day”, we prayed to the elusive weather forecast, wishing to see close-up the promised bio-diversity. We crossed our fingers but thunder kept shaking the leaden sky over the Carlos Pellegrini colony. While we

calmed our anxiety with a delicious quiebebe (a local food made with pumpkin and cheese), the rain made ever deeper puddles and we were getting used to its agreeable music on the roof of the inn gallery.We got there on a Wednesday evening, and we had to wait till Saturday for the sun. It was a just a glimpse that made us rejoice when we opened the window, but it was overcast again by the time we took the boat out on the lagoon. Anyway, the first animals, hidden during so many bad days, came out tame and quiet, curious, incredible. We took lots of photographs searching for the best postcard of the Iberá Marsh to share it with you on the cover. But it was the last day of our stay when we found the perfect scenery: pure light and hundreds of deer in the marshes, capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) with little birds on their backs, caiman, howler monkeys, southern screamers (Chauna torquata), storks, the singing of the birds in a hallucinatory universe. You cannot know the richness of an eco-system until you can see it for yourself and we not only fulfilled our dream, it was more than we ever imagined. The wetlands and their magic gave us a sunny day and that was enough to fill us with excitement and emotion and amusement. And previous to that, the charm of the colony even made the rain nice.

FIAMBALA.– A 1500 msnm y a un costado de la Cordillera de los Andes,

se enclava Fiambalá, un pequeño pobla-do de 3000 habitantes, al que ellos le die-ron el nombre de Pianwallá, que significa “incursión o penetración en la alta mon-taña”. Y es así, literalmente, como uno se incrusta en las alturas y se conmueve con el mix que otorga el cielo inmenso en combinación con el spa natural de sus termas, el incesante viento Zonda y los sabores de la región.Fundado en 1702, es parte del corredor bioceánico que conduce a Chile y en ese maravilloso trayecto de 200 km que lo une con el paso fronterizo se transitan paisajes extremos, desiertos por momen-tos, y de repente aparecen oasis de verdor cuando en verano baja por las laderas el agua de deshielo, formando arroyos por todas partes. La villa está rodeada de un gran desierto de dunas doradas que cambian de formas y texturas según como sopla el viento. Pero también se ve engarzada a un desa-fiante vergel de añosos árboles de agua-ribay, olivos y vides, de los cuales brotan orgullosos vinos regionales. FIAMBALA – At 1500 meters above sea level and to the side of the Andes

mountain range, you find Fiambalá, a small village of 3000 inhabitants, which they called PIanwallá that means “incursion or penetration in the high mountain”. at the foothills of the mountains, you come to the mythical thermal waters of Fiambalá. Over a natural gulch, 1850 meters above sea level, there is thermal complex, combining the spectacularity of the Andean landscape with the therapeutical qualities of the mineral waters. These waters appear at 1750 meters above sea level and are concentrated in 14 stone pools with temperatures going from 28 to 51 degrees centigrade. By the side of the pools there are small rooms and cabanas where you can stay. Used for health treatments, the waters also offer calm, far from worldly noise, pure pleasure.After the immersion it’s time to continue on our way to the San Francisco Pass, one of the best tours if you want to experiment real heights and a breathtaking landscape up to the border with Chile.You take National Route 60, with a hard asphalt tarmac all the way, climbing through the Chaschuil valley, to reach 4726 meters. The Pass (establishing a through-point for the inter-oceanic connection between Argentina and the north of Chile) is natural, with soft slopes and with no impassable mountains. It is open all year round and since it almost never snows, it is a great option to cross the border.There are six emergency shelters on the road, with communication equipment, and where travelers can spend the night, build a fire in the fireplace and with a glass of artisan wine, you can enjoy the stars in the immense sky, a new sensation that you can only find in the heart of the Andes mountain range.

Sobre una quebrada natural a 1.850 ms-nm se ubica el complejo termal que com-bina la espectacularidad del paisaje an-dino con cualidades terapéuticas únicas a partir de la riqueza mineral. Las aguas emergen a 1750 msnm y se concentran en 14 piletas de piedra con temperaturas que varían entre los 51ºC y 28ºC. Al cos-tado de los piletones, hay pequeñas habi-taciones y cabañas para alojarse y hacer del bálsamo relajante una cotidianeidad. Utilizadas para tratamientos de salud, las aguas brindan tranquilidad, lejos del rui-do, lejos del mundo. Después de la inmersión, es hora de iniciar la travesía hacia el Paso San Francisco, una de las mejores excursiones para experimentar la verdadera altura en un paisaje sobrecogedor hasta el límite con Chile. Se toma la Ruta Nacional 60, asfaltada en todo su recorrido y en permanente subida por el valle de Chaschuil, para llegar hasta los 4.726 msnm. El Paso (que establece una carrera interoceánica que une por carretera a la Argentina con el norte de Chile) es natural con suaves pendientes y sin la presencia de cerros infranqueables. Su apertura durante todo el año y la casi inexistencia de nieve lo presentan como una óptima opción para atravesar la frontera. Hay seis refugios de emergencia a lo largo del camino, con equipos de comunica-ción, y donde los viajeros pueden pasar la noche, hacer un fuego en el hogar, y con una copa de vino artesanal se puede dis-frutar de las estrellas en el inmenso cielo, una nueva sensación que solo se vive en el corazón de la Cordillera de los Andes.

Saturday afternoon. There is a party in the San Isidro racetrack: the Great Jockey Club Derby, on its 75th

anniversary. The grandstands are full and the horses are walking around the track, surrounded by fans. The race is off, and the 1200 meters go by in a couple of minutes, hurrahs and a win by two bodies for number 2. A drink and an applause for Anaerobio and its jockey, the afternoon is going by.Sunday comes with an artisan fair in the main plaza, across from the Cathedral, and a call to mass with 12 bells at noon. After lunch it’s time to wonder the balconies over the banks and wait for two museums to open their doors, historical houses of the residential area.Under the Pacara earpod trees and in the middle of the park with hundreds of tree species, the farm that once belonged to Juan Martín de Pueyrredón, is today the Pueyrredón Museum, presenting the best portraits of the family by the artist Prilidiano (1823-1870), objects from the old house and religious images.There is another museum a few blocks from hear, at Quinta Los Ombúes, that belonged to Mariquita Sánchez de Thompson, where important political personalities congregated. There are paintings, objects, clothing and furniture belonging to national heroes and local grandees.

Sábado por la tarde. Es fiesta en el Hipódromo de San Isidro: se corre el Gran Premio Jockey Club, con ani-

versario de 75 años incluido. Las tribunas están repletas y los caballos varean en una pista surcada de amantes del turf. Tras la largada, los 1200 metros pasan en cuestión de minutos, vítores y dos cuerpos de ventaja para el nú-mero 2. Copa y aplausos para Anaerobio y su jockey, va cayendo la tarde. El domingo amanece con feria artesana en la plaza cen-tral, frente a la Catedral, con misa convocada por las 12 campanadas del mediodía. Y después del almuerzo, es tiempo de recorrer los balcones sobre las barrancas y esperar a la apertura de dos museos imperdibles, casonas históricas de este poblado residencial. Bajo los timbó y en medio de un parque con cientos de especies arbóreas ganándole equilibrio a la barranca, la chacra que perteneciera a Juan Martín Pueyrredón, es hoy el Museo Pueyrredón, exposición de los mejores retratos del artista de la familia, Prilidiano (1823-1870), así como objetos de la antigua casona e imágenes religiosas.Otro museo espera a pocas cuadras, en este caso en Quinta Los Ombúes, que perteneciera a Mariquita Sánchez de Thompson, por donde desfilaron personalidades políti-cas de relevancia. Cuadros, objetos, vestidos y mobiliario perteneciente a próceres y personajes sanisidrenses se re-únen aquí, par ser compartidos con los visitantes.

CARLOS PELLEGRINI.– Después de un rato navegando la Laguna

Iberá, cuando ya las primeras exclamacio-nes de sorpresa por ver un yacaré negro o un simpático carpincho con pajarito en el lomo dejan paso al descubrimiento constante de animales, el término avistaje puede, tranquilamente, cambiarse por el de observación. Es tan franco el encuentro entre el hombre y la fauna silvestre que no hacen falta ni zoom ni largavistas para divisar la biodiversidad. Basta con subirse a una lancha con algún guía vaqueano, de esos que desandan los esteros desde chicos, para entender a este humedal, el segundo más grande de América, una reserva de agua dulce fundamental, donde florecen los irupés y flotan los embalsados, una ma-raña vegetal como islotes sobre la laguna. En este humedal conviven, protegidos como Reserva Provincial, yacarés overos (especie con riesgo de extinción) y negros; miles de carpinchos, ciervos de los panta-nos, venados de las pampas, boas curiyú, lobitos de río (más esquivos para ser vistos) chajás con sus crías, cigüeñas elevándose en vuelo elegantísimas y más de 300 especies de aves que se dejan observar de cerca por ojos humanos emocionados. Los esteros son un escenario para deslumbrarse: hay que hacer silencio y dejarlos expresarse.

Refugio de riquezaLa Laguna Iberá, parte de un sistema hi-drográfico muy extenso (la vista tampoco llega a dar con sus orillas en el horizonte), se transformó en refugio de la vida sil-vestre a partir de ser nombrada Reserva Natural Provincial, en 1983. Y de allí la mansedumbre que manifiestan las nuevas generaciones de yacarés overos y negros, fotografiados a centímetros sin mover un músculo. Sólo algunos, los que cuentan más años, se alejan nadando cuando pasa

when the first expressions of surprise on seeing a black caiman or a cute capybara with a little bird on its back are followed by a constant discovery of animals, the term sighting can be easily exchanged for observation. The encounter between man and wild fauna is so direct you do not need a zoom or binoculars to see the bio-diversity. You only need to get on a boat with a knowledgeable guide, of those that wander the marshes since they were children, to understand this wetland, the second biggest in America, a fundamental reserve of drinkable water, where irupe (Victoria cruziana) bloom, and tangles of plants like islands float on the lagoon.In this wetland, protected by the Provincial Reservation, you find caimans (an endangered species); thousands of capybara, marsh deer, pampa deer, anaconda kuriyú, otters (the hardest to see) chajá with their pigeons, storks elegantly taking flight and more than 350 species of birds that can be observed close up by human eyes, full of emotion. The marshes are a place to be dazzled: you have to be quiet and let them have their say.

Shelter of wealthThe Iberá Lagoon, a part of a very extensive hydrographic system (you cannot see the banks on the horizon), became a shelter for wildlife since it was as declared a Provincial Natural reservation in 1983. Para acercarse a los esteros, los conductores de la lancha utilizan una caña larga para apoyarse sobre el suelo pantanoso de la laguna, una figura que heredaron de los antepasados y que es posible comprar en miniatura, en madera tallada, para recor-dar la experiencia. También los carpinchos y los pájaros son objeto de esas pequeñas esculturas típicas, mientras que bolsos y paneras se tejen con los juncos fuertes de la laguna. El mate siempre es compañero de los pa-seos. Y en las posadas, es el mimo típico en la atención personal de los dueños para con sus huéspedes. A la hora de renovar energías, gana la comida casera y regional: el quibebe (una sopa espesa de zapallo y queso), el asado y el mamón, cuando lle-gan los dulces.La colonia es tranquila, ideal para dedi-carle caminatas por sus calles con apenas algunos faroles, hecho que regala, por las noches, la oscuridad necesaria para que-

La foto, el instanteEste destino correntino alejado del mun-danal ruido es un terreno fértil para los amantes de la fotografía y el turismo aven-tura. Apenas se llega a Pellegrini, antes de cruzar el puente de madera que deriva en las calles más pobladas, tendrá uno a su izquierda un centro de interpretación interactivo para vi-sitar, acompañado por guardaparques, y a la derecha, se abrirá este sendero circular. A través de una caminata sin dificultades, bastará con mirar hacia arriba para adivinar el paradero de los monos masticando frutos, durmiendo o saltando entre las ramas. Aquí sí será necesario el zoom de la cámara, dada la altura, pero en todo caso, ya encontrarlos es parte del juego. Sin duda, las imágenes naturales que se llevará uno de Iberá serán increíbles. Pero hay una, pa-radójicamente la última antes de que la lancha retomara su viaje de vuelta al muelle desde el Miriñay, que resume la filosofía del ecosistema. Es la escena de un yacaré hembra con tres recién nacidos sobre el lomo, apenas aprendiendo a abrir los ojos ante su mundo. Es la escena que garantiza que este universo de verdes, animales exóticos y agua brillante seguirá siendo el refu-gio perfecto para tanta biodiversidad.

recommended for enjoying the Paraná jungle, starting from Tacuapí. This eco-lodge blends in with the surroundings, graced with hundreds of waterfalls, such as those in the Salto Encantado Provincial Park, very close to the lodge, and the curious Moconá Falls. El Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar es un icono de la biodiversidad de la Región de Atacama, en

Chile. Por esta época, está engalanado por las flores de la Leucocoryne appendiculata y narcissoides, de-safiando al desierto con sus tonos rosados. Bajo este imponente marco de belleza natural se levanta Pan de Azúcar Camping & Cabañas. Construidas con mate-riales propios del desierto más árido del mundo, como la totora y el barro, son perfectas como punto de par-tida para excursiones al interior de esta área protegida, como senderismo e interpretación ambiental. En ellas se hace uso de energías renovables (iluminación vía pa-neles solares y materiales amigables con el ambiente), parte de un compromiso con el Turismo Sustentable y con los ecosistemas presentes, haciendo de ésta una

parada obligada en el descubrimiento del Desierto Costero y sus fenómenos naturales, considerado una verdadera joya de la biodiversidad.Totalmente equipadas y amobladas, hay cinco cabañas disponibles para dejarse colmar por el espíritu desér-tico y las vistas de la Isla de Pan de Azúcar, así como la profusa avifauna costera donde los pelícanos son protagonistas más que simpáticos. También es posible divisar zorros Chilla, ballenas y delfines en los meses estivales. Se recomienda una estadía de al menos dos días para poder llevarse una imagen completa y encan-tadora del parque y sus habitantes. Los sitios de mayor atractivo para el público son imperdibles: el Mirador Pan de Azúcar bordeado de cactus; el sector de Farellón Costero “Las Lomitas” y la Isla de Pan de Azúcar.

Pocos lugares en el mundo nos enfrentan con la magnificencia de la naturaleza como estar frente

al Glaciar Perito Moreno. Esto se demuestra desde su nacimiento, cobijado en el horizonte, donde conti-nuas nevadas permiten que el glaciar se alimente de hielo y fluya, por más de 30 km, hasta su frente con casi 5 km. de caprichosas construcciones de hasta 70 metros de alto que se desploman entre imponentes destellos de agua. Pero no es solo su tamaño lo que nos conmueve, sino la posibilidad de permitirnos pararnos frente a él y contemplarlo en su totalidad. Retratar tanta inmensidad se convierte en un desafío. Luego de más de una semana de recorrerlo, escalarlo y filmarlo se nos presentó la posibilidad de sobrevo-larlo, para observar desde el aire todo el proceso que mantiene vivo al glaciar. A diferencia de la mayoría de los glaciares del mundo que se encuentran en retro-ceso, el glaciar Moreno permanece en equilibrio. Su avance supera los dos metros diarios y los continuos desprendimientos son los que mantienen su frente en constante colisión con la península que separa al Brazo Rico del Canal de los Témpanos. Alistamos los equipos y preparamos el interior del avión para poder maniobrar con las cámaras. El clima no nos favorecía. Nos esperaban fuertes vientos y un frente de nubes que, atrapadas en el nacimiento del glaciar, amenazaban con descargar su nieve. Sin duda, era un día excelente para el glaciar. Su fortaleza se debe en gran medida a la insistencia de este clima. Ya en el aire viramos una y otra vez para realizar las imágenes donde se pudiera apreciar como el glaciar se alimen-taba vorazmente de tanta nieve y frío.

There are very few places in the world that confront us with the magnificence of

nature like the Perito Moreno glacier. This is true from its source, far off in the horizon, where continuous snowfalls feed the glacier, so that it can flow for more than 30 km, to its front with almost 5 kilometers of capricious constructions up to 70 meters high that fall, producing imposing explosions of water. But it is not only the size that moves us, but the possibility of standing in front of it and contemplating its totality. Portraying its immensity becomes a challenge. After a week of touring it, climbing and filming, we had the chance to overfly it, to observe from the air the process that keeps the glacier alive. Most glaciers in the world are receding, but the Moreno glacier is in equilibrium. It advances more than two meters daily and the continuous detachments keep its front in permanent collision with the peninsula that separates the Rico Branch from the Iceberg Canal.

We got our equipment on board and prepared the interior of the plane so we could maneuver with our cameras. The weather was favorable. We were headed towards strong winds and a cloud front that, trapped at the source of the glacier, was threatening to discharge its snow. It was no doubt an excellent day for the glacier. Its strength is due in an important measure to the persistence of this climate. Once in the air, we veered, over and over, to get the images where it is possible to see how the glacier feeds voraciously on so much snow and cold.
