Down syndrome (DS by its acronym in English), also known as Trisomy 21, the condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child (a) develops mentally and physically. This condition affects 1 in every 800 babies.

The physical and mental problems associated with Down syndrome can vary among children (as). While some children (as) with Down syndrome need medical attention, others lead very healthy lives.

Although Down syndrome is not preventable, can be detected before birth. Health problems in the cases of Down syndrome can be treated and there are community resources to help children (as) and families with this condition.

is down syndrome?

Normally, in the moment of conception a baby inherits genetic information from their parents by 46 chromosomes: 23 from the mother and 23 from father. In most cases of Down syndrome child (a) receives an extra chromosome 21 with a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This extra genetic material causes the physical and developmental delays associated with Down syndrome.

Although no one knows with certainty why Down syndrome occurs and although there is no way to avoid the mistake of chromosomes that causes it, scientists know that women who conceive after age 35 significantly increases your risk of a baby with this condition. At age 30, for example, a woman has a 1 in 900 chance of conceiving a child (a) with Down syndrome.

What causes Down syndrome?

DS is the most common cause of congenital mental cognitive impairment. Represents 25% of all cases of cognitive impairment. It is a genetic syndrome rather than a disease according to the classical model, and although it is often associated with certain diseases, the final phenotypic expression varied from person to person. As common features can review their physiognomy peculiar generalized muscle hypotonia, a variable degree of cognitive impairment and growth retardation. As for the phenotype have been described more than 100 peculiar features associated with the SD, an individual may present a very variable number of them. In fact, none is considered constant or pathognomonic although the joint assessment of appearing is usually sufficient for diagnosis.

The improvement in the treatment of diseases associated with DS has increased life expectancy of these people, from age 14 a few decades ago, almost to normal (60 years in developed countries) today. Over the past 150 years have been postulated empirical treatments (thyroid hormone, growth hormone, glutamic acid, dimethyl sulfoxide, vitamin and mineral complex, 5-Hydroxytryptophan or piracetam) without any longitudinal studies have shown double-blind administration cause any significant positive effect on motor development, social, intellectual or verbal expression of people with DS. There is currently no effective drug treatment for the SD, although studies launched by sequencing the human genome to foresee a possible action (enzymatic or genetic), yes, still in the future remote. The only treatments that have shown a significant influence on the development of children with DS are early childhood intervention programs, aimed at stimulating the central nervous system early in the first six years of life.
