to get in to the RAF at the ofcer training level. He had to overcome
many other challenges to get his idea recognised. He was clearly a

high speeds. In this sense, Frank Whittle once said: “I realised to y high
and fast a new type of engine was needed”. He was clearly giving this
requirement some thought and later came up with the concept of the jetengine.
Whittle’s patent was published in many countries. Work on developing the
jet engine began in Germany one year after the patent was granted and a
jet powered aircraft, the Heinkel He 178, had already been produced by
1939. In the UK, Whittle struggled to get support for his idea; the rst plane
to y with a Whittle engine was the Gloster E28/39 in 1941. Whittle’s idea
was so successful that most aircraft use the jet engine in some form for
their motive power today.
Whetstone today
The company set up by Frank Whittle for the purpose of designing and
manufacturing jet engines was named Power Jets Ltd and one of its
facilities was located in Whetstone. Today it is part of ITP UK and provides
aircraft engine manufacturers with specialist engineering services in
turbo-machinery design in both, compressor and turbines technology.
This includes the design and delivery of special purpose test rigs for aero
engine components, the operation of ITP’s Rugby Fan Blade Off and bird-strike facility, the development and marketing of the specialist software
tool ESATAN TMS (used by the European Space Agency to design their
products), the writing of software codes used to control diverse systems
from the airplane and engine, and the design of rotating parts which are
manufactured in ITP’s factory in Lincoln.
Experimental rigs are designed to validate aspects of the engine such
as mechanical integrity, life and durability, aerothermal performance or
technology demonstration. The rig design is carried out in Whetstone and
instrumentation and build is often performed in ITP centres in Spain.
The Fan Blade off and Bird-strike facility uses advanced control systems
to carry out the tests, which must be done to fractions of a millisecond
accuracy to capture the various impact events on high speed lm and
supporting instrumentation. Hardware modications to manage the
different test vehicles and the dynamic loading which is applied, losing a
fan blade are designed in Whetstone.
Blisks
Until the mid-1980s all conventional aero engine compressors useddisks slotted around the periphery into which individual airfoil blades are
subsequently tted, and this is still the case for larger engines. However,
there is an increasing trend to machine airfoil blades and the disk from a
single piece of material, and the market has coined new terms to describe
this component: the blisk (bladed disk) or the IBR (integral bladed rotor).
Operating from the same site where Sir Frank and his Power Jets team
developed the rst jet engines for the RAF, ITP UK today designs and
manufactures blisks of increasing size and sophistication for customers.
Blisks have enabled engineers to produce lighter and more fuel efcient
engines which are quicker to build and overhaul. They can have two or
even three rows of airfoil blades, which greatly simplify the design of the
engine and remove many joints, holes and bolts.
In Sir Frank’s day, machining from solid involved highly skilled operators
using manually operated milling machines over many days. Nowadays
computer controlled machines are programmed by highly skilled
manufacturing engineers at ITP advance manufacturing facility in Lincoln
to produce parts of amazing complexity and precision in just a fraction of
the time.
It is worth noting, however, that blisks can have their shortcomings. Sir
Frank had problems with compressor failure due to excessive centrifugal
stresses and vane vibrations, and today’s compressor blisks can be much
more susceptible to vibration than their ‘blade and disk’ counterparts. To
safeguard against this ITP designers employ sophisticated design software
to ensure that the blisk airfoil harmonics are well outside of the signicant
engine vibration modes. ITP prides itself on being able to build on the
heritage of Power Jets, using technological developments to ensure that
Sir Frank’s engine concept continues to evolve to meet market demands.

Rolls-Royce e ITP
extienden su colaboraciónal Trent 7000
Rolls-Royce and IP expand theircollaboration to the rent 7000
(New Engine Option) como socio a riesgo y benecio
The 2015 Paris Air Show (June 15-21) at Le Bourget
served as the stage for Rolls-Royce and ITP to
announce a contract that expands their partnership. According to the agreement that was announced, ITP
will be responsible for the supply of the low pressure
turbine (LPT) for the Trent 7000 engine for all versions
of the Airbus 330neo (“New Engine Option”) as a risk
and revenue sharing partner through the entire life of
the program.
Hence, ITP will be responsible for the design,
manufacture and assembly of the LPT module, one of
the key modules in today’s large turbofan engines. ITPwill conduct the design of the turbine, including all of
its stages using the most advanced technology with
the purpose of producing the most environmentally
friendly and efcient turbine.
Furthermore, ITP will manufacture all of the key
components of the turbine and will be in charge of
assembly, in view of supplying the full module toRolls-Royce for subsequent installation on the engine.
This will translate into approximately a 10% plus
increase of the internal production volume starting in
2018.
As a result, the responsibility of ITP in the A330 engine
has increased signicantly, going from manufacturing
compressor casings and assembly of the turbines
(Trent 700) to the design and supply of the full LPT,
with also full participation in the aftermarket business(Trent 7000).
Through the signing of this agreement, ITP will
be supplying over 50% of LPTs for twin-aisle
aircraft globally, as it joins this program to its

MTR390.
On March 5 ITP and Rolls-Royce announced a strategic collaboration agreement whereby
ITP will supply low pressure turbines -conventional turbines- and the new high-speed turbines
for its new generation engines: the Ultrafan. These are the future generation of engines in which
Rolls-Royce is currently working and whose entry into service is planned for the beginning of 2025.
ITP has been maintaining a fruitful collaborative relationship with Rolls-Royce, a shareholder of
ITP, more specically since 1992 when ITP began to collaborate in the Trent 700 and Trent 800
programs. The rst time ITP took part in the design of the LPT was with the Trent 500 engine and
since then ITP has been responsible for the design and development of the low pressure turbinesfor all of the Trent family of engines that power the Airbus aircraft A300, A340, A380, A350 and

última versión del Trent 1000);
pasajeros, ambas equipadas
con motores Trent 7000. Con
una entrada en servicio (EIS)
prevista para nales de 2017,
Airbus espera que el A330neo
se convierta en la referencia en
su segmento de mercado.
Desde el anuncio de su
lanzamiento en la feria de
Farnborough del año pasado,
Airbus ha recibido cerca de
150 pedidos de dicho avión,
correspondientes a sieteaerolíneas, entre las que cabe
destacar AirAsia X, Air Lease
Corporation y Delta Air Lines.
already-existing participation
as the party responsible for
the LPT in Rolls-Royce engines
for the A380, B787 and A350
aircraft, the latter aircraft
with only this type of engine
available. This represents avery signicant milestone for
ITP, as it completes a key
stage in its collaboration with
Rolls-Royce with respect to
LPTs, a collaboration that began
as a moderate-level risk partner
in the Trent 700 program in 1993
and which afterward expanded
continuously with further
participation in the Trent 500,Trent 900, Trent 1000, Trent
XWB, programs, concluding
with the current participation in
the Trent 7000.
A new engine
The Trent 7000 is the seventh
generation of the Trent familyof engines, a leader in the
wide-body aircraft engine
market and is the engine being
developed by Rolls-Royce to
exclusively power the Airbus
A330neo.
The Trent 7000 brings together
experience from the Trent 700
–the engine of choice for the
current A330; architecture fromthe Trent 1000 TEN- the latest
version of the Trent 1000 engine;
and the latest technology from
the Trent XWB- the world’s
most efcient large aero engine.
The Trent 7000 eventually
will be replacing the Trent
700, a market leader in its
category, therefore considerably
improving its performance-
especially in terms of fuel
consumption (about 10% less)-doubling the engine’s by-pass
ratio and reducing its noise
footprint by half. The engine
will have a thrust of between
64,000 and 72,000 pounds.
Meeting the timescales for the
development of the engine is of
paramount importance to this
program, which is the reason
why a development programfor the new engine has been
dened and commitment to
Airbus and which will entail
working hard to remain within
strict compliance of each of the
program’s milestones.
The Airbus A300neo has two
versions, the 800 and the 900,
accommodating 252 and 310
passengers respectively, and
are both equipped with Trent
7000 engines. With an entry into
service (EIS) planned for 2017,
Airbus expects the A300neo
will become the benchmark in
its market segment. Since the

AIR: Rolls-Royce ha sido accionista de ITP
desde su fundación en 1989, ¿cómo
ha funcionado la asociación para
Rolls-Royce desde entonces?
¿Cree usted que la relación
ha evolucionado y/o se ha
consolidado a lo largo de los años?
Tony Wood: En Rolls-Royce
colaboración estrecha, no siempre hemos
estado de acuerdo; aun así siempre
hemos encontrado la manera de
resolverlo, lo cual demuestra la
fuerza y madurez de la relación que
mantenemos.

AIR: Rolls-Royce has been a shareholder
of ITP since its foundation in 1989,
how has the partnership worked out for
Rolls-Royce since the early 90s? Do you
think the relationship has evolved and/or
consolidated over the years?
Tony Wood: At Rolls-Royce we are proud ofour role as shareholder, engineering partner
and customer in helping to develop ITP
into the successful and capable aerospace
company it has become. ITP has been
our low-pressure turbine (LPT) partner for
over two decades, since the development
of the Trent 500 LPT. ITP has developed
its engineering capability to the point that
we are pleased to have chosen ITP as our
exclusive partner for development of the
enhanced intermediate pressure turbine
technology needed for our next-generation
engine architecture; the UltraFan™. ITP
are also exclusive for traditional LPTs for
wide body. This means that we will remain
partners for many years to come.
A: During ITP’s 25th Anniversary celebration
last year your CEO said both teams
(Rolls-Royce and ITP) work really welltogether, can you please comment a bit on
this statement considering your experience
working with ITP?
TW: ITP is the most integrated partner
engineering team that we collaborate with.
We have been together throughout all
the Trent programmes, and the trust and
respect that has been built between our
engineering teams means we know we can rely on ITP to develop the technology and
deliver the turbine engineering and products
that we need to full our business goals.
ITP is also a signicant investor in these
programmes, and both ITP and Rolls-Royce
should be proud that we have reached our
objective of having achieved 55% of the
large civil engine order book. As with all
strong partnerships, we haven’t always agreed on every issue over the years, but it
is a testament of the strength and maturity
of the relationship that we can always nd a
way of working things out between us.
A: The latest agreement signed in March
between Rolls-Royce, SENER and ITP,
obviously has a great importance for ITP,

Sistema Fan de Carbono/Titanio y la carcasa, compuestos por unmaterial que consigue reducir el peso hasta 1.500 libras por avión;

TW: Together, we have forged a strong
working relationship over many years.
Today ITP design, manufacture and
assemble world-class low-pressure
turbines across a range of engines. When
we looked at the requirements for our future
civil aero-engines, it was clear that ITP
was the obvious partner. As a result, we
took the decision to revise the shareholder
agreement that underpins the joint venture,
to establish how we work together in
the future and continue to develop this
important relationship between our twocompanies. These new engine designs –
which we call the Advance and Ultrafan™
– will be the basis of our future civil engines.
A: Looking forward, what can we expect
from the new generation of Ultrafan
engines?
TW: Last year we shared details of two
next-generation engine designs, featuringtechnology and innovation designed to
transform performance. The rst design,
Advance, will offer at least 20 per cent
better fuel burn and CO2 emissions than
the rst generation of Trent engine and
could be ready from the end of this decade.
The second, UltraFan™, a geared design,
is based on technology that could be ready
for service from 2025 and will offer at least
25 per cent improvement in fuel burn and
emissions against the same baseline.
The designs will feature architecture and
technology improvements, all of which
are currently at an advanced stage of
development, that include a new engine
core architecture; a Carbon/ Titanium Fan
System and composite casing that reduces
weight by up to 1,500lb per aircraft; and advanced heat resistant components that
operate more effectively in high-turbine
temperatures.
A: Also, another important challenge in
the years to come is the A330neo airplane
version, what is involved in the development
of an engine for this airplane?
TW : This is a great new platform, and
we are delighted to have secured a soulsource position with Airbus to power the
aircraft with our Trent 7000 engine, and in
less than 12-months we’ve already sold
[157] aircraft to customers. A phrase
that’s becoming increasingly common in
our company is ‘invent once and reuse
many times’. With the Trent 7000 for the
A330neo, we take developments from new
engine programmes such as the Trent 1000
and Trent XWB and ow them back into the
earlier Trent engine designs.
A: Could you please tell us a bit more
about We have heard you say how proud
everyone at Rolls-Royce is with the recent
order by Emirates for Trent 900 engines to
equip 50 A380s, why do you think Emirates
nally chose the Rolls-Royce option?TW: Quite simply because we offered the
best product; the Trent 900 is the best
engine for the A380 platform. Sir Tim Clark,
President, Emirates Airline, was kind enough
to say that he has been impressed with our
commitment to continual improvements in
the economic and operational performance
of the Trent 900. We have an engine that
offers the lowest lifetime fuel burn, withthe latest version including technology
developed for the Trent XWB and Trent
1000 engines. So this decision is a sign
of our determination to provide the best
technology solution combined with the best
in customer service.

A: We have talked about commercial
aviation, but what can you tell us about
the partnership on the military engine
programmes where both companies,
Rolls-Royce and ITP, are jointly involved
(EJ200 and TP400M specically)
TW: Rolls-Royce and ITP are longstanding
partners in the military market, dating back
to 1986 with the formation of Eurojet. As
part of that consortium we have played a
major role in the development, production
and support of the EJ200, which is
demonstrating outstanding performance
and reliability powering the EuroghterTyphoon. In 2002, we joined forces again
as part of Europrop International for the
development of the Western world’s largest-
ever turboprop engine, the TP400, which is
now powering the A400M into service. We
have also worked together in the military
helicopter market on the MTR390-E, which
powers the growth variant of the Tiger
attack helicopter.
A: Where do you think the opportunities will
come from for defense aviation in the next
decade?
TW: The engines that we just mentioned
have big opportunities over the next
decade. The EJ200 has proved itself to be
outstandingly reliable in combat and, as
an integral part of the Typhoon platform,
is competing for a number of export
opportunities around the world. In addition,
the engine is also well suited to a number
of indigenous combat aircraft programmes
that are currently under development
in some of the world’s defence growth
markets, such as the Republic of Korea,
India and Turkey. The TP400 is still at the beginning of its service life and I believe it will
prove to be a game-changer in the military
transport market bringing new levels of
performance and capability. Airbus believes
that there is a bright future for export sales
and that presents opportunities for both ITP
and Rolls-Royce in the future.
A: Finally, we would like to take this
opportunity to ask your opinion about the main challenges ahead for the aerospace
industry?
TW: The fundamentals of our business are
strong, and we are condent in our long-
term future. The ‘mega trends’ are on our
side, by which we mean population growth,
GDP growth and an increase in demand
for power systems. Put simply, as people
become wealthier they demand goods and services, and the demand for air travel
increases – this is good for our Industry.
While our customers require more power,
this is not at any economic or environmental
cost, so our challenge is better power. This
means that Industry needs to focus on
investing in technology and innovation so
that our customers can meet their economic
and environmental ambitions.
We have seen - and are continuing to see
- some near term uncertainty. In the short
term, we expect the pace of economic
growth in individual markets to uctuate,
and we have seen rapidly changing fuel prices, commodity prices and exchange
rates. For us, this means we need to stay
focussed on the things within our business
that we can control, in particular our costs.

Coinciding with the celebration of the 25th anniversary since it
was set up, ITP has closed the 2014 scal year with growth of 4%compared to 2013 and an average of 8% over the last ve scal
years.
This positive situation is the result of the hard work by all of those
at the company and the company’s bet to invest in R&D and on
improving efciency and continuing to be a leader in the different
aviation programs. “This allows us to continue to move forward
with our growth, including the goal of diversifying our client base
and products”, says ITP CEO Ignacio Mataix.
In 2014 ITP has invested a total amount of 62 million euros in R&D
activities, which has allowed ITP to consolidate its position as one
of the top three Spanish companies with the highest investment in
this eld in relation to sales.
“We need to continue to invest in R&D in order to be present in
the next generation of aircraft. It is thanks to our investments indifferent programs over the last few years together with the global
aeronautical industry’s positive outlook that we can now claim that
the future of ITP lies with protable growth”, says Mataix.
This positive path continues in 2015, a year when a growth rate
similar to that of last year is expected. In this sense, new programs
are being launched and new investments are being made that are
expected to have a positive impact on the short-term nancial
protability.
Other encouraging data are the 58 million euros of operating prot
that represent a 22% increase compared to last year coupled with
a protability of 8.9% on sales. This increase is fundamentally due
to the improved performance of a number of commercial aviation
programs together with improved unit costs and efciency.

Consolidated prot after tax rose to 64 million euros, 7.3% more
compared to last year.
Good performance in the commercial aviation sector
Sales in the civil aviation business unit amounted to 350 million
euros in 2014, which means an 11% increase.
This division, which already represents 54% of the total activity
of the company, has closed the year with signicant milestones
in different segments. Such is the case of the twin-aisle aircraft
market, with the entry into service (EIS) of the Airbus A350 XWB
with Qatar Airways, powered by the Trent XWB from Rolls-Royce
and in which ITP takes part as a risk and revenue sharing partner.
Furthermore, the supply of low-pressure turbines has continued for
all programs, reaching record highs in the case of the Trent 700.
Announcement of the launch of the PW800
One of the most important milestones of last year within the single
aisle aircraft segment was the launching of the rst ight of the
Airbus A320neo, which is powered with engines that include ITP
components and technology.
The production of structural components and external parts for the
Pratt & Whitney PurePower® PW1000 engines has also continued
in this segment.
With respect to the business jet segment, 2014 witnessed the
announcement of the launch of the new Gulfstream G500 and G600
aircraft. These aircraft are equipped with PurePower® PW800
engines by Pratt & Whitney Canada and both aircraft feature low-
pressure compressors and inter-turbine structures made by ITP.
Increased export activities
The In Service Support business unit has also shown positive
performance, as proven by its 122 million euros in revenue that
mean a 1% increase compared to last year. This growth has been
prompted by increased activity in the export market (which have in
turn mitigated the drop in business sales resulting from reductions
in defense budgets) and in the regional jet segment.
Activities in the defense aviation sector recorded sales of 27% of
the total, 7% less than last year. This unit has taken part in the
activities that have made possible the EIS of the A400M transport
aircraft for the Turkish, British and German air forces. The EIS of the
A400M in Spain is planned for 2016, coinciding with the kick-off of
ITP’s new Strategic Plan for the next ve years.

prestamos”.

Although some of the trips to the different sites are planned, this is
a type of job that demands great exibility on the part of Toscano:“Besides traveling a lot, which allows you to see many countries
around the world, this job requires a great deal of dedication,
as many trips are not planned ahead of time and the customer
may call us on short notice. Furthermore, you have no schedules
whatsoever, since time runs short in each job”. In this sense,
Manuel tries to exercise whenever a bit of time comes available,
either at the hotel gym or jogging outdoors. He believes keeping in
shape is important due to his demanding lifestyle.
One of the main challenges that exist in this type of intervention
has to do with the fact that engines are usually mounted on the
aircraft’s wing, which complicates access for the mechanics. “The
job is totally different when the engine is dismounted from the wing;
on several occasions we have been forced to modify our tools in
order to be able to gain full reach to all of the sections of an engine”.
In this sense, and as explained by Toscano himself, Aircraft on
Ground (AOG) is a key concept, as it explains how events can
prevent an aircraft from ying, with the resulting associated costs
for the customer, and the requirements that exist for repairing them in the shortest time possible in order to render them operational as
soon as possible.
Although trips normally last an average of ve days, Manuel explains
how on one trip he was forced to stay in Tanzania for a full month.
“We had to work on the entire eet of a customer, although initially
we were only supposed to work on the maintenance of one aircraft.
According to Toscano, one of the keys that make achieving excellent
service possible is teamwork. Behind each assignment, Toscano has a home-based team that provides support to all dispatched
technical staff and ensures that all the materials required for carrying
out the work are available in terms of quantity and quality. Likewise,
each trip requires coordination with external teams, since often “you
end up working hand-in-hand with the customer’s mechanics”.
Lastly, he highlights another of the aspects that he likes most about
his job: the sales angle. “During each assignment you are ITP’s
image. You have to do your utmost to gain the customer’s loyalty
and also to take the opportunity to show to him or her the full range
of services that we provide”.
