• In these text, Bro Paul depicts two contrasting conditions-carnality and spirituality

• Carnality is the life of sin, spirituality is the life of (holy Spirit) seed bearing

• How will a tongue speaking brother edify you if he lives in hatred and lack self control?

– A supernatural gifting that reveals the mind, purpose, and the way of God to a pariticular situation

• To expressly acquire this gift, delight in studying and applying the word of God. Col 3:16

• What it is : • A supernatural utterance from a christian through the

• Divine means of deep communication with God using spiritual languages. I cor 14.2

• Expressed tongues are often times diffcult to comprehend with human wisdom

• Manifests during Holy Spirit baptism;but not a gift until it is permanently and consistently used. Acts 2:4

A. The Gift of Diverse Tongues

• What it is not:

• it is not a learned language like learned German, Spanish or English



Previously on Vocal(Inspirational) Gifts

• Why named vocal? • Because they are supernatural utterances of the Holy

Spirit spoken through a vessel(user)

• Diverse tongues as supernatural utterance of the Holy Spirit in an unknown tongue

• Edifies only the user if there is no interpretation.

• Equivalent to prophecy if correctly and carefully interpreted (I Corinthians 14:5-6)



B. The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

• Inspired interpretation of the message contained in spoken unknown tongues

• In most cases, not word-for-word interpretation, since spoken tongues are unintelligble

– Maybe shorter/longer than the actual spoken tongue

– In rare case, might be word for word interpretation.

• Hence, it depends on the level of spiritual sensitivity of the spirit man of the interpreter

• What is prophecy?

• If I manifest the gift of Prophecy, does that qualifies me as a Prophet?

What is Prophecy? • Revealed word/plan/mind of God about the

future • Revelational : 2 peter 1:21

• However, Prophecy in the new testament is often God‘s inspired messsage for edifying the church now or later

• It has three pronged purpose (Acronyms EEC, discussed later)

• I corinthians 14:1-3



What is Prophecy contd..... • Note:

• Because of its importance(especially in the old testament)

• It is highly important for the one prophesying to be Spirit filled with sensitive spiritual ears always

• You cannot know the mind of God if you dont have the Spirit of God

Gift of Prophesying and Office of a Prophet

Operating in the gift of prophecy does not make one a prophect

The office of a prophect is a ministry

requires the consistent manifestation of gift of prophecy and at least two revelation gift

Interpretation of Tongues vs Prophecy

• Both are inspired utterances from the Holy Spirit

• Tongues are prophecies provided there is faith-based interpretation: I cor 14:5

• Hence, both fulfil the purpose of edification, unlike speaking in tongues that edífies only the speaker if not interpreted: I cor 14:5

• Prophecy cut across all section of spiritual activities such as preaching,witnessing, singing, reading psalms: Eph 5: 18,19,I cor 14:26,



Purpose of prophecy • In old testament, prophecy is mostly foretelling,

• Howbeit with all the elements of edifying, exhorting and comforting

• Prophecies of the patriachs of old

• For example Jacob prophecies: Genesis 49:1

• Moses Deut 28:1-end

• Micaiah Prophecy I kings 22:7-28

• Nathan Prophecy 2 Sam 12: 1-25

• Ezekiel Prophecy : Ezekiel 36,Ezekiel 37:1-14

• But in general, the main highlight of old testament prophecies can summed up in “Oh Isreal, return to the Lord“



Purpose of prophecy • An important tool for edifying, comforting and exhorting people. I cor

14:3 • Edifying-to build up or charge up

• Comforting- to sheer up or console

Purpose of Prophecy

• Exhorting: to warn or advice – Jesus prophecy about the last days: Mark 13:

5,9,14,21-23, 28-29,37

– Also in Luke 21:5-31, Matthew 24.

– Revelation of John the beloved to the seven churches • Rev 2:5, Rev 3:14-16,19, Rev 2:12-14

• Why?- Because of the danger of apostaste, backslidden prophets

• Faith, a mystery that is not limited in use to believers but to non-believers as well – We all believe in the law of motion, law of gravity,

law of sleeping and waking, law of reaping and sowing.

• so everyone who confesses Jesus as Lord can be called “faith-carrier“

• But as some footballers have distingusied themselves by reason of use, so some christians have exercised thier faith to a spuernatural level of all-possibilities.

– This level of faith is called gift of faith!!!!

B. The Gifts of Healing

• The gifts of healing as found in I cor 12:19 is translated “Charismata iamaton” in greek

• Holy Spirit-given ability to heal all form of sickness-emotional, physical or spiritual

• Although all gifts of the Spirit require faith to be effective,

• the gifts of healing perhaps require greater measure of faith

• One can feign speaking in tongue, or prophesy, but it is difficult to feign healing

Gift of the working of Miracles

• Holy Spirit-given ability that operates by the supernatural laws suspending natural laws;

• Thus intervening in the affairs of men and bringing about miracles

• Miracle is humanly impossible but divinely simple – Acts 26:8

• The Bible is filled with miracles and examples of People who used the gift of miracle

• The creation of the earth is the first miracle
