sible ShapesTo get the ball rolling in the sur-

    realism department, I decided

to integrate a branch of geom-

    etry called Impossible Shapes

    into my architectural spaces.

    These are 3 dimensional shapes

drawn in 2D, where the shad-

    ing implies a certain angle,

    while the intersection of edges

    implies another. Well known

    examples of impossible shapes

    are the Penrose stair, Necker

    cube, and Penrose Triangle

    (opposite,right). Recreating

these illusions in 3D require a

    specific viewing angle, which of

    course, dictates the limitations

    of the camera move.

Interior DesignDeciding on the actual spaces

    and designing them presented

    the biggest challenge in the

    development process. I was

    trying to create spaces without

    knowing how many, or what

they were going to be. The sub-

    marine layered onto my water

metaphor, so it was a solid idea

    that I kept.

    I knew that I wanted a tradi-tional theater - partly inspired

by some images Id seen of

for inspiration I looked to art-

ists like Leandro Erlich (right),whos installations usually come

in the form of life size interac-

    tive optical illusions. The film

    Inception (opposite,right) and

    Third and Seventh (opposite,

    right) are obvious influences

in terms of feel. Artist Jean

    Francois Rauzier (right) cre-

    ates exceedingly detailed dream

    scapes he calls Hyperphotos

    - his sense of depth and disori-

    entation is something I sought

    to capture.

    Surrealism & Impos-

    Cultural Context: Art

    & ArchitectureIve loved architecture since

    childhood and used to make

my own designs, albeit for fun

    houses and theme parks. As

    most artists do, Ive always

loved the idea of creating worlds

    that couldnt exist in reality,

which is why Im so drawn to

3D. So for my thesis, I wanted

    to create a cinematic experi-

ence that feels real, yet has

    illogical, dream-like qualities.

I had fragmented ideas of what

I wanted in my piece. Initially,

RETHINKING THE THEATERIn order to finish on time, I needed the theater to be moremodern where I could replace infinite detail with sleekdesign. I totally stumbled upon a photo of the West Ger-man Pavilion which I liked for the stars and sphericalshape of the building. It reminded me of a planetariumwhich in turn, led me to the Griffiths Observatory lookingat pendulumns, telescopes and latticed cielings. I gravi-tated towards that elliptical shape for the theater in gen-eral as in the Winspear Opera House (right). Eventually Ithought of the Gherkin building in London and settled onthat shape for the theater shell. Of course, that meanteach balcony had to be built individually which was ex-tra work due to the design. I am nevertheless, happywith the shape as it allows for other neat plays on lightand concept. The ocula will be made of water, lookingup through the surface at the sky as if you are still underwater. There will be caustics in the theater and possiblya telescope on the stage. Just below the ocula is a hugeRoman numeral clock face. This will be the ending shot.I would like for the parts of the clock face to come apartwith parallax as the camera moves toward the ocula.

apart so that they would have some play with the gyro-scopic camera move.

The lighting was another process in which I had to workaround the triangle. I used final gather which meant thatno matter what, the triangle would cause subtle shadow-ing. I had to texture and light the entire atrium beforerendering a high resolution image of the floor and project-ing it back onto the triangle tops. I then painted light ontothe triangle front to complete the optical illusion - thiswas by far the easiest and most gratifying part.

It is now called the Penrose Atrium.

RETHINKING THE ATRIUMThis was by far the toughest shot to plan in terms of con-cept while maintaining composition. The Atrium is sup-posed to be the abstract space representing a deep partof the subconscious. Here I was to put an impossibleshape. Because I had already locked a complex cam-era move that enters and exits the scene at 90 degreeangles, I thought I could only use t he ambiguous circle- which, compositionally just wasnt cutting it. In orderfor the optical illusion to work, I would have to place thecircle in the top right corner of the floor which lookedrandom - not good for a piece where shot composition iseverything. I thought maybe I could disguise it by textur-ing it to look like a spiral staircase - even so what woulda spiral stair be doing in such an odd place?

At some point I decided it would be appropriate to havethe floor pattern be a compass. I also decided to scrapthe circle and try to make the triangle work. If I madethe floor pattern be a compass/sundial then I could makethe triangle be the gnomon of the sundial. The cameramove would work with this. Now most Penrose Tri-angles you see are drawn as a 2D isometric projectionfrom what seems to be a 45 degree angle. Being that thecamera enters/exits at 90 degrees, this meant I had tohave my penrose triangle also be a right triangle. It tooksome fudging because I didnt quite know how to drawa regular penrose triangle to begin with. Finally I took atriangle image, skewed it in photoshop, brought the im-age plane into maya, and modeled the triangle in threeseparate pieces from the render camera where I wanted

it to parallax into place. I spread the triangle pieces
