Editor’s NotesDelicious LunchesHave you noticed the lunches provided by St John’s each month? Onesatisfied reader certainly has: “As I walked past St John’s Church in Broad Street, Harleston on a Tuesday,I noticed an invitation to lunch there, from 12 mid-day to 1.30pm, for only £5per two-course meal, including tea or coffee - and no booking required. On entering, I was amazed at the dishes on offer, from beautiful fresh salads, coleslaw and pies and quiches, with roll and butter followed by desserts to diefor; trifle, cheesecake, fruit salad, fruit crumble. Such a friendly atmosphere - this is a perfect venue, especially for those livingalone. Congratulations to members of St John’s. Brand New RecognitionCustomers often consult with me before purchasing a new computer. (This must be what a“computer consultant” is – I have often wondered.) The key question proposed being “Whatshould I buy?”. Exploring the query further I discover that what is actually meant is, “Can yourecommend a ‘brand’ rather than ‘specification’?” Politely, I explain that this approachencourages style over substance! There are many computer manufacturers, some more recognisable than others but notnecessarily more dependable. Instead of choosing one make over another because of a shinybadge, I would advocate a stance promoting the consideration of the sometimes disorientingtechy measurements.Perhaps the most significant internal facet in any computer is the processor. This tends not tobe easily upgradeable, so you want to make sure that most of your budget focuses on this‘bang for buck’ relationship. Many computers make use of similar, if not the same processors– the two main competitors being Intel and AMD.However, simplicity is left wanting when delving into the world of CPU speeds, power economyand even marketing. Intel for example give the impression of a straightforward tiered systemwhen promoting their range of processors from i3 to i5, i7 to the newly released i9. Yet, thereare several different processors in any one range and with each new generation comes furtherchoice. I use online benchmarking sites to weigh up varying CPUs against each other. Typically, thehigher the score the faster the processor. This brief research can help the customer sound veryknowledgeable and make the sales assistant’s patter a lot shorter!Of course, there are other factors that can impact performance including memory and graphicsthat should not be ignored. These should be pondered alongside the philosophical question of‘purpose’. What do you want from the computer? Why are we here? If Cinderella’s shoe fittedperfectly, why did it fall off?Furthermore, I have previously referenced the emergence of solid state hard drives in everydaycomputing. These are often smaller in capacity versus traditional drives but are much, muchfaster. If you are not storing thousands of audio tracks, photos, or videos then an SSD is theway to go! Finally, you may like to contemplate ‘form’. Do you prefer the portability aspect of a laptop ortablet, or would you rather the formality and arrangement of a desktop PC? There are manyall-in-one machines available with everything built into a large screen, some being touchenabled, so fun pokes and prods can be exercised.

Bullock Fair Charity ShopWe have been asked a lot “What are the dots for?” - everything has a dot, from books and CDs in the book shop to toys, clothes and shoes in the clothesshop. This is our own unique way of stock-taking. We have four colours: red; yellow; green and blue. Everything is on sale forfour weeks and we then assess what stock we have; some items are re-priced,moved around or go on the 20p shelves and some books are re-priced at 50peach and moved to the outside trolleys and some items we just leave untilthe next time round. We have a great team working each week to make thispossible, it takes time but it is worth all the hard work. Some of us have beenaround the town and have noticed our little dots in unusual places. We would like to give a big Thank You to the Co-op for the cycle rack theyhave supplied for the town in our car park; this is for everyone to use as wedo have several cyclists in the town, especially at this time of the year. Now summer is here we are getting our summer stock out - sandals, shorts, tops ….. come and see what you can find!

Harleston’s Future/Swift Action Group

Report for 2018By the time you read this report, our Harlestonswifts (Apus Apus, meaning ‘no foot, no foot’!)will have arrived back in Norfolk, and maybeeven taken up residence in one of the boxes thathave been put up on many of our homes spreadaround the town. A lot of you have been goodenough to provide a home for these lovely birds, who are losing their natural nesting sites in roof

spaces and under tiles, largely due to our ignorance of their nesting habits.Since our project started in 2016, we have been able to erect 143 swiftnestboxes within the town. Last year we had reports of some of the boxesbeing occupied and we hope that the number will increase this year. Wherewe have swift call ‘tweeters’ installed, the chances of getting a “lodger” areincreased and where we have multiple boxes installed, we hope to start acolony.Swifts do everything on the wing (apart from raising young on a nest) and sowe have provided a rudimentary nest in the boxes, which comprises a shallowdish or ‘concave’ lined with soft duck feathers. This seems to encourage thebirds to add to the nest material with anything else that they can capture onthe wing. They normally raise 2 or 3 chicks, who will fly in 6 to 8 weeks ofhatching. If you find a bird on the ground, firstly check its wing length. If it is16cm long, it can fly. Hold it up in your cupped hands and see if it will fly offinto the wind. Don’t throw it up, and don’t feed it. The birds are insectivorousand anything else will prove fatal. If it fails to fly, place it in a ventilatedcardboard box and call me - Peter Metcalf on 01379 854872. I will alert a UKSwift Carer, who will look after it until it recovers. Juveniles arrive here later than the adults, and those looking for a nest sitewill do so a year before they breed and are called ‘bangers’, as they knockthe boxes as they go by, surveying the site offered. The adults take upresidence in the same box that they inhabited last year. They spend the nightwith the chicks and they can live up to 20 years. So, join me in saluting these wonderful birds, who can fly up to 500 miles aday and travel over 7000 miles to their winter homes in southern Africa eachyear.

The 15th Annual Ladies’ Tractor Road Run - Sunday 1st JulyDavid Brown Tractor Club (Suffolk and Norfolk) Ltd

What started in 2004 as a ‘one-off’ event is now in its 15th

year. Last year, the Run took our total raised to £584,000for Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer research. Theresidents and visitors to Harleston and surrounding villageswere very generous in their contribution towards this figure. This year we are hoping for another big step towards ourtarget of a million pounds!

The challenge of driving a tractor is both an achievement and an undertakingfor a team of ladies, mostly complete novice tractor drivers, of all ages andfrom all walks of life. It is not an event undertaken lightly as it demands en-terprise and real commitment. Many ladies have done the Run several times, some just the once and quite a few have done all 14 of them! Each year, wehave about a third of new ladies who have made the numbers up to about 150entrants. Every year, we hear of yet more ladies who are affected by, or lostto, breast cancer. All we can do is raise the money to research the causesand find cures. We all thank you for your support and encouragement overthe years.

We do hope you will be there on the day: 12.30 pm through Harleston and1pm at Gawdy Hall for the picnic to which everyone is invited.

From Harleston to HiroshimaRobin Twigge, chairman of Harleston’s Future, has returned from a mission

to Japan to place symbols forpeace from Harleston and district atthe Hiroshima Peace MemorialPark which is a public park for worldpeace. The memorial park wasopened in 1954 close to where thefirst atomic bomb was dropped on6th August 1945. It is dedicated tothe legacy of Hiroshima as the firstcity in the world to suffer nuclearattack; to the memories of thebomb’s direct and indirect victims;and as a place to advocate worldpeace. Last year, here in Harleston anddistrict - and in the spirit of ancientJapanese lore where he or she whomakes 1,000 origami cranes will

have a wish fulfilled - 1,000 brightly coloured cranes were folded by manyindividuals and community groups to promote a plea for peace. Each onecarried a hand written or hand drawn message about peace contributed bythe children and older students in our schools (Harleston; the Pulhams;Alburgh with Denton) and by residents and community leaders across thedistrict. Having flown high in the nave of St John’s, Harleston throughout lastsummer, the wingtips were cut from the paper cranes and taken, as symbolicmessengers, in a transparent orb to Ground Zero and to the United Nationsbuilding in New York for the ringing of the Peace Bell on International PeaceDay - and then on a research balloon to the Earth’s very stratosphere where,on that day (22 miles above the earth), Harleston’s messages became theworld’s highest wish for peace. The project was run under the auspices ofHarleston’s Future, and the Rotary Club of Harleston and District.Robin’s April mission was to leave our wingtips, together with a large, whiteorigami crane signed by the respective Chairs of Harleston’s Future; RotaryClub of Harleston and District; and Redenhall with Harleston Town Council,in surely the most fitting and significant resting place - Hiroshima. There, since the founding of the Peace Memorial Park, people and organisationsfrom around the world have brought hundreds of thousands of their own papercranes and wishes for peace. The large crane that Robin took to leave therewith the wingtips, was inscribed with the message – “This is the 1,000th

Origami Crane – fulfilling our community’s New Year Resolution to voice

our deep desire and hope for peace and unity among all peoples and allnations.”On his return from Japan and the great symbol for peace that the HiroshimaPeace Memorial Park represents, Robin reflected on the devastation that abomb such as that can wreak on our civilisation and mankind. He is convincedthat we must “try to stand up for peace on a daily basis, and remind our leadersat home and abroad, that they have a duty, and huge responsibility, to deter arepeat of such a human disaster”. Harleston’s peace project, he said, “broughtso many people together to promote just how important, and withoutboundaries, the principle of peace is.” Ian Carstairs for Harleston’s Future, and lead co-ordinator of the project fromthe start to finish, reflected on its significance - “It has been hugely rewarding, and rather poignant, to see our simple local idea grow to link people of all agesand backgrounds from across our community with others far across the worldthrough this shared message.” A full (and copiously illustrated) report charting all stages of Harleston and

district’s 1,000 Cranes for Peace can be found at:www.visitharleston.org.uk/cranesforpeace

London Road ChurchAnts! That’s right, there are millions of them just in my garden, let alonethroughout our world. We can’t walk anywhere without there being ants underour feet; even though we may not see them, but wait a while, and there theyare, swarming to find out what this curious thing is standing on their patch.Put something on the lawn for a few minutes, and there they are exploring thismigrant. But what do we learn from these tiny creatures? First I learnt theybite if they think they are threatened. In the Bible they are only mentioned twice (in Proverbs – ch. 6:6 and ch. 30:25)where we find that they are considered as wise, and without a commander orruler. Yet they store food in the summer for the oncoming winter months. We like to consider ourselves free to do what we like, and long to break out ofrestricting circumstances. But total freedom or complete independence isnever an option. We are servants by nature, a bit like the ant, hurrying andscurrying about doing what needs to be done. Ants are industrious and willlearn to take advantage of what they come across. It will even attack and killother colonies and take ‘captive’ cocoons containing the larvae of worker ants. When these ‘captured children’ hatch, they assume that they are part of thefamily and launch into the tasks they were born to do. They never realizethat they are forced labour victims of an enemy.Sin is an enemy and will attack and control us, and it makes me wonder thatwe ourselves might be forced labourers under its control. But we have asolution. By turning to Christ in faith, we are released from the condemnationof sin. Then by the Holy Spirit’s power we can begin by serving the Lord.We are all servants. Our decision is not whether we will serve, but whom.

ColinHoly Humour:

“Dad, did you go to Sunday School when you were a boy?”“Yes, my son, I was always sent to Sunday School!”

“Well, I think I’m going to quit; it’s not doing me any good either”.

Ramblings from the RectoryDear friendsI woke up this morning with a smile on my face. As I write this, I keep beingdistracted by the sun shining brightly, by the birds and the business of thenatural world outside my window. I can smell the coffee brewing too. Onmornings like this I feel on top of the world. It’s a great feeling. There are, though, mornings that are far less bright. Mornings of grey cloudand drizzle. Sometimes, the sun can be shining outside, but inside all is stillgrey. Sadness, is a fact of life. Sometimes, I’ve messed up and feel the weightof my stupidity, particularly if my foolishness has hurt another. Sometimes, there is nothing that I can put my finger on, the greyness just is.It is days like that when I need encouragement. I look for that encouragementfrom God, directly through his Spirit. I often find that when I have troubles Ican offer them to him, and I feel them lifted, completely, or just a little.Sometimes, I know that I just have to hold that unseen hand and carry on,encouraged by those around me.Then I’m in the sunshine again. When I am, I try to remember the feel of thegrey. I want to remember so that I can be encouragement for someone whois feeling far from bright and cheerful. Perhaps with a word, perhaps just sittingbeside someone and being company in a hard time.

God bless,Nigel.

Plastics not FantasticNigel: After watching David Attenborough’s “Green Planet”, so many of us are horrified by thedamage that waste plastic is doing, particularly in the sea. Over 8.3 billion tonnes of plastichave been produced since the 1950s. That’s enough plastic to cover every inch of the UK ankle-deep more than ten times over. Just 9% was recycled (CofE Environment Programme). Do youhave any tips for people?Simon: Give up disposable cups and drinks in plastic bottles and use a travel mug or waterbottle. Get a reusable bottle, fill it up with tap water before leaving the house, and refill itwherever you happen to be. I hope most people now use their own reusable bags: plastic bagsand produce bags are often used for minutes before being discarded. Most plastic bags arenot recycled, ending up in landfill, or blow around the countryside and into the sea. Plasticdisposable cutlery and straws are among the worst plastic pollution culprits. I have a Spork inmy van so if ever I need a spoon, fork or knife I don’t have to rely on the disposable ones. Doyou have any thoughts?Nigel: At home we try to buy fresh bread and veg that come in either paper bags or no bags:This eliminates plastic wrapping waste and helps support local businesses. Sadly, this is notalways that easy to do. I know many people are switching to returnable glass bottles from theirlocal milkman. This reduces the number of plastic bottles used and again helps local business. We haven’t taken this step, but we do make sure that we recycle the bottles that we use. A bigthing for me is not forgetting to take along reusable bags. Simon: Plastic is such a wonderful bit of engineering and something that is ideal for re-usewhere we can. What about personal hygiene? Nigel: Disposable razors and razor blades are two of the biggest contributors to plastic waste. So, if you shave, why not use a razor with replaceable blades, or be like me and grow a beard! Many facial scrubs and toiletry products contain tiny plastic beads. EU law will soon ban thesebut for a while it’s well worth checking labels and avoiding anything with “polyethylene” listedas an ingredient. Wet wipes are convenient, but they contain plastic fibres that don’t breakdown when flushed, can people avoid using them or use them less. I have seen little reusablecloths that can be used for make-up, so there must be other alternatives out there too. Usingbar soap instead of liquid hand soap is an easy way to reduce plastic use.Simon: I know some shops sell unwrapped soaps, this strikes me as a great idea.Nigel: Sadly, they are in the minority but using a bar of soap is still better. Synthetic fabricscreate microfibre pollution when washed, so I’m going to be looking for natural fibres when Ibuy clothes. I’ll also be asking for zero plastic packaging in the shop or from the online retailer. Simon: This is obviously something you feel quite passionately about, anything else?Nigel: Makesure your voice is heard: Share what you are doing with friends, family andcommunity. Ask your MP what they are doing to tackle single use plastics. Join the UN’s CleanSeas campaign (http://www.cleanseas.org/). Call on supermarkets for a Plastic Free Aisle(http://aplasticplanet.com/help-us-2/).

Equity Release, or Lifetime Mortgage as it is sometimes known, has been around for a longtime. We were advising clients on Home Income Plans back in the 1980s but Instead of alump sum, a Home Income Plan provided a lifetime income. The reason some people take outa tax free lump sum are many and varied. Life can be funny with its many twists and turns butmany people have a very large proportion of their accumulated wealth in one commodity calledtheir home.Releasing capital can solve so many problems; repairs to your property, enabling you to stayin the family home and not downsizing, for emotional reasons because it has been your homefor many many years and this can provide the capital to remain there and it’s still your property, you still own it. It could be practical reasons like replacement windows or a new boiler, or morepersonal reasons like helping your children and grandchildren. One very elderly client wantedto help his grandchildren with a deposit for their first home before he passed on, he just wantedto give them the cheque himself. For others it’s a motor home or caravan, so that they can fulfiltheir ambitions to travel or to ease or get rid of a debt; credit card, interest only mortgage or itcould just to take away the worry of your future financial security with money in the bank. It’s entirely optional but the interest build up can be mitigated by paying the interest or makingpayment as and when it’s convenient to you. Don’t forget that it’s still your responsibility formaintenance and repairs, but the outstanding debt will never be more than the property value,no matter how long you live, it will not go into negative equity. The various lenders have differentattitudes, a property might not be acceptable to one but is to another. Some companies mayoffer better rates if you have certain medical conditions and age helps as well. The market is getting bigger, schemes are evolving and we would like to think that advice is re-ally important and of course, it’s always free to talk.
