President’s Message

President’s Message – September 2013 Wow! It’s hard to believe that this is my last message to you as President of the St. Louis Section. It has certainly been an honor to serve in that capacity for the past year.

I’m sure the theme of this message is not unique but it just seems natural to recap some of the Sections’ accomplishments from the past year and to thank those people responsible for them. It’s amazing how this organization really runs itself. I found that the best way to make sure that things get done is to just get out of the

way and let the capable and talented group of committee heads and members do what they do best. Honestly, the support I received from the Society and the initiative of our Section’s dedicated group of volunteers made it pretty hard for me to mess things up. I’d like to express a heartfelt “thank you” to my colleagues on the Executive Board, all of the Committee Chairs and Members, and to all of you Section members for your hard work, support, and dedication to ASCE.

Here are some of the accomplishments of which the Section should be proud:

Receiving the Outstanding Section Award for the second year in a row

Winning a History and Heritage Citation from the Society

Winning the ASCE Section and Branch Diversity Award

Community Outreach Activities such as: The Girl Scouts’ “The Big Day – Believe in Girls”, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, and participating in Ritenour High School’s Annual Engineering Week

Institute Activities such as: SEI Day, GeoConfluence, and the GeoInstitute’s Case Histories and Student Projects Seminar

Younger Member Activities such as: Engineer Your Own Success, Trivia Night, Engineering Career Day, Earthquake Awareness Day, and Rebuilding Together

The Sustainability Committee’s Earth Day event

SIUE hosting the Mid-Continent Student Conference

Revising the Section’s By-Laws and Constitution

Completing the first-ever Missouri State Infrastructure Report Card and presenting it to the public at a press conference at St. Louis University

And the groundwork has been laid for a bigger and better 2013-2014. I’m really looking forward to the 100th Anniversary Gala, the 2014 Younger Members Council and the 2014 Multi-Regional Leadership Conference. Thanks to all of you working to make those events happen.

Lastly, I’d like to wish “good luck” to our new President, Marc Bachetti, welcome our new Director, Brent Vaughn to the Board, and say a sad “good-bye” to out-going Board member, Elise Ibendahl. She has been an invaluable member of the Board and she will be missed.

Things I Think (When I’m Not Thinking About Engineering)

I see the Cardinals winning the Central Division but losing to the Dodgers in the League Championship Series.

I think the Rams will be better this year but will miss the playoffs.

I highly recommend the TV series “The Bridge” on FX Network. I’m also looking forward to another season of “The League” and “Top Chef, New Orleans” this fall.

I’d also like to thank all of you for indulging my “thoughts”. I know some of you liked them, some not. For better or worse, I thought it would be a good way to add a personal touch and for you all to know me a little bit better. Until next month, Steve.

100th Anniversary Planning Committee

HELP WRITE OUR SECTION’S HISTORY

Next year is the St. Louis Section’s 100th anniversary. The 100th

Anniversary Committee is planning to publish a large-format, hard

cover, full color history book celebrating the achievements of civil

engineering to the region of the St. Louis Section. The book will

highlight projects, historic companies and government agencies, events

and individuals. The articles will be mostly photos or drawings, with

non-technical text. The audience is the general public. We need gifted writers and historic photos to make this book

truly remarkable. Projects have to be in the boundaries of the St. Louis Section (see our website for a map). Companies

must have their headquarters in the St. Louis Section to be considered for a separate article. If a company was the

designer or general contractor for a significant project – such as one of the St. Louis Section’s Outstanding Civil

Engineering Projects – then that company, or historic individual, may have an accompanying sidebar. Authors will be

acknowledged. If you are interested, email Jeff Fouse at [email protected] to register your article and to receive

the space and format guidelines. We would like to receive proposals for articles by October 15, 2013. We particularly

need articles on projects, etc. outside of the immediate St. Louis area!

This project is funded in part by the St. Louis Section and national ASCE. We will accept donations to help offset the cost,

so that we can place this book free to area schools and libraries and at low cost to our members and the public. Major

financial contributors will be acknowledged in the book.

GEOCACHING/WAYMARKING TO NOTABLE CIVIL ENGINEERING SITES

Among the several events and activities being planned for the 100th Anniversary is to develop a list of notable civil

engineering projects and sites located in or near the Section’s area and set them up for geocaching or waymarking. If you

aren’t familiar with geocaching or waymarking, they are similar GPS-based hobbies popular with people around the

world who enjoy travelling, exploring and being outdoors, and is a particularly enjoyable for family activity. Generally,

the GPS-equipped participant visits a website that allows them to search for coordinates and descriptions of places of

interest. In waymarking, the coordinates lead the participant to the specific location with perhaps an opportunity to pick

up more information, maybe clues about the project or a next location. Geocaching goes a little further in that there is

typically a small container hidden at the specified location and participants can log their visit in a tiny notebook and

exchange small objects found in the cache container. The possibilities are many. Some of the sites popular in the hobby

include www.geocaching.com and www.waymarking.com.

Our concept for this 100th Anniversary activity is to set up a webpage specifically for this, and it would be an on-going

project with minimal maintenance. We would determine coordinates that the general public could use to find civil

engineering points of interest using a GPS receiver. Relevant information about the projects or sites would also be

included on the website for the visitors’ education about civil engineering.

Your help is needed to make this an interesting and fun activity for people wanting to visit and learn about the projects.

We are looking for your input for:

Compiling the list of projects and sites.

Writing interesting and concise descriptions about the projects.

Determining safely accessible vantage points to view or more physically experience the projects.

Establishing and verifying the GPS coordinates.

Younger Member Group Welcome back ASCE YMs!

It feels like an eternity since we had a meeting. Let’s correct that, shall we?

RSVP to who? Well, glad you asked. In case you don’t know, the YMG committee chair position serves a two-year term. My two years are up. Over the past two years, the number of YMs attending meetings has steadily increased. We have expanded our volunteer obligations, now working very closely with the Science Center’s Engineering Career Day, as well as MSPE’s E-week held there, too. We have had a few scouting exhibits. Our trivia night is now an annual event. We also have provided benefit from the trivia night to help develop our careers and boost the student groups’ Mid-Continent Regional Conference. And we have made sure to serve our community through Rebuilding Together.

Thank you to everyone who has come out to a meeting, a volunteer event, or contacted me to help out in some way with the Younger Member Group these last two years. It has been a fantastic ride.

A little bit about Britt:

Britt Marron is a Professional Engineer in the transportation sector. She graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2007 with her Bachelor’s degree and then 2013 with a Master’s. Between 2007-2013, Britt worked for CH2M Hill as a roadway designer, acquiring her professional license in 2012. Since February, she has joined Parsons Brinkerhoff as a project engineer.

Britt has been an active member of ASCE YM since 2010. She has headed up the community engagement effort for the group with Rebuilding Together St. Louis as a House Captain along with other various volunteer events like e-week. On top of these efforts, she earned the Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship from WTS in 2013. Britt looks forward to building on the great work that past chairs have done for the younger members.

But that’s not the only change in 2013.

Andy Mueller will be heading up the Community Service subcommittee. He’ll be looking at ways to further involve the YMG in activities giving back to our community.

Melantha Norton will be the new Correspondence Secretary. She’ll be in charge of submitting our Annual Report to the Society.

Alison Graves will be our new webmaster. She’ll make sure our Facebook page (look us up!) and ASCE St. Louis webpage <click here!> is up to date with our critical information.

So, here’s a preview of a few things on tap for this year:
