28th June 2021 Wed 30th June Section C of the America Paper on Reaganomics
Year 12 A Level Mock Exam Preparation – Summer 2021
- Civil courts and ADR- Criminal Courts and Lay People- Legal Personnel
Criminal Law The first two questions will be scenario questions. You should spend 10 minutes writing your A01 (knowledge) on the topic and then 15 minutes writing you A02 (application). Although you have learnt the A01 it is important to only include what is relevant – for example in murder if the thin skull rule or transferred malice applies, then you would include them. If they do not apply then there is no need to mention them. If you include things that do not apply, it shows you have learnt a standard response that is not tailored to the question – this will stop you from getting into Level 4 (Excellent) so please be careful.
You will then have to answer a 20 mark evaluation question. Again, you should spend the first 10 minutes writing the A01 and then 15 minutes writing the A03 – note the A03 is worth 12 marks and the A01 is only worth 8, please focus on the A03.
Actus reus Mens rea and strict liability Murder Voluntary manslaughter Involuntary manslaughter Non-fatal offences against the person Theft Robbery Burglary Self-defence Consent Insanity and automatism Intoxication Duress and necessity Attempted crimes Evaluation of Non Fatals, Intoxication, self-defence and consent.
Revision TechniquesYou need to use the following structure (which we have been using in class):
- Point- Evidence- Counter Point- Evidence- Link to Question
You need to repeat this 4 times (or 3 if you run out of time) and then need to suggest 2 reforms (proposed changes) to the law. These will ideally be from a Law Commission paper. You MUST conclude – if you do not conclude you cannot get above Level 2 (Basic).
You need to spend 15 minutes on this question and only write A03 (Evaluation).
How do I get 12 A02 marks? In your application of the law, try to be logical, precise and explicit!
28
Year 12 A Level Mock Exam Preparation – Summer 2021
Don’t make sweeping statements such as “Bob has committed all of the actus reus elements of murder” or “Bob clearly has intention to kill” say WHY!
For example “when Bob stabs Fred multiple times it is clear that he has direct intention to kill him, and further evidence that this was his purpose can be seen in the fact he shouted ‘I’m going to finish you’ before he stabbed him.”
In coming to a conclusion, it is great if you feel confident enough to say definitively whether or not D will be found guilty/not guilty, but it is also acceptable to clarify that e.g. “so long as the jury decide that D was dishonest under the Ivey test then Bob will be guilty of theft.”
Remember, so long as you are logical in your application of the law, the exam board should give you marks for coming to a different conclusion to other students or the one on the mark scheme, so there is no need to panic!
