From the Secretary's Desk

BREAD Society's Mission has all along been to provide financial assistance to

bright underprivileged students to pursue higher education to enable them to

reach their maximum potential while simultaneously inculcating good human

values in them.

Govt. of A.P. has now stepped in to give a boost to higher education of students

from the econom i cal l y weaker sec ti ons of the soc i ety wi th

waiver/reimbursement of tuition fee in addition to monthly maintenance

scholarship awards ranging from Rs.182 to Rs .962 for different courses of study

on 'Saturation basis'.

Therefore, BREAD Society is discontinuing its scholarships from 2009-10.

Instead, it has decided to focus on upgrading the skills of all the existing BREAD

scholars to enable them to reach their maximum potential. Skill upgrade

programs include

(i) Training facility which will include spoken English, effective communication,

computer skills etc. at Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKCs) to all BREAD

scholars.

(ii) Coaching for higher education to qualify with distinction in Common Entrance

Tests to pursue higher education eg. M.A./ M.Com./ M.Sc./ M.C.A./

M.B.A. for graduate scholars, B.Tech for Polytechic scholars, and M.Tech for

B.Tech scholars.

(iii) Coaching for Competitive Examinations at Hyderabad Study Circle, a not-

for-profit Society located in Hyderabad, to expose them to the latest tools and

techniques to qualify in Central/ State Civil Services, Bank exams. etc. to all

graduate and post-graduate BREAD scholars.

(iv) Industry-relevant training at ESSENCE, a non-profit Society located in S K

University Campus, Anantapur to Polytechnic and B.Tech scholars.

It has also decided to extend assistance under the above programs to fresh

scholars by registering them relaxing the course-specific criteria, without

altering the basic structure, reaching out to about twice the number of students

hitherto supported.

In addition, it is proposed to coach pre-SSC students from govt. schools to bring

them at par with students from priv ate schools by the time they complete SSC

and to establish libraries in Elementary Schools and High Schools to inculcate

the habit of book reading among students from a very young age.

BREAD Society solicits cooperation from all its Sponsors, Donors, Mentors,

Members and Well-wishers to help it serve the bright underprivileged students

attain their maximum potential and administer the funds efficiently.

BREAD Society is completing two decades of service for the cause of education.

While for the first 12 years, Bread Society was supported entirely by the N.S

Foundation, USA, for its funding, TANA Foundation joined hands with Bread in

2002. In a way year 2002 proved to be a landmark year. Significant changes in

the selection of scholars based on pre-requisite of study in government schools

till Std X, readily spots the most needy. Further, specifications of 85% marks as

a minimum qualifying threshold also ensures selection of meritorious students.

Interestingly, separation of partnership with NSF in 2004 presented tough

challenges to Bread Society in resource mobilization. As it is said “tough times

do not last but tough people do”. The Bread Society did not only overcome the

challenge but grew by leaps and bounds. The total contributions rose from Rs. 5

lakhs in 2003-04 to the high of Rs. 1.65 crores in 2007-08. The number of

scholarships scaled from 100 in 2003-04 to 1877 (old an d new) in 2008-09.

This phenomenal growth was due to processes and systems developed

diligently and followed scrupulously. The selection of scholars has been entirely

merit based, unbiased and transparent. The distinctive feature of the process of

selection has been the absence of discretion or subjective element. This led to

continued and unstinted support from donors. However, recent initiatives by the

Government of Andhra Pradesh in supporting higher education among

economically weaker section of society in addition to SC/ST/BC and minority

students, has occupied the entire space in which Bread has been operating.

This has again posed fresh challenges to the Bread Society. The Bread Society

has set in motion a process of reinventing its role by exploring new areas of

service.

Some of the fresh initiatives include training Bread scholars in soft skills in JKCs,

coaching for various Common Entrance Tests conducted for higher education

like ECET, PGCET, ICET, GATE, Civil services, Bank Exams etc., giving industry

relevant training for B.Tech and Polytech Scholars in pre-final and final years of

college. Another interesting initiative is to bring pre-SSC students of govt.

schools under special coaching so that they are able to be at par with other

private school children by the time they complete SSC.

It is heartening to note that Bread Society has expanded by induction of experts

as members from various fields of Arts, Science, Technology and Administration.

I am sure the expanded and experienced family of Bread Society would not only

meet fresh challenges successfully but create new paradigms in serving the

needy and meritiorious students.

A REVIEW OF THE ACTIVITIES OF BREAD SOCIETY DURING 2008-09

1. Introduction:

BREAD Society has been formulating eligibility criteria for the award of

scholarships from 2003-04 onwards following the basic premise that

students from govt. high schools are from the disadvantaged sections of

the society. In 2008-09, this method of identification has been adopted

by many institutions including the Govt. of A.P. vindicating the stand

taken by the Society as the true index to identify the indigent students

and started supporting them. For example,

i) Selecting thousands of top ranking students from the govt. high

schools from each of the Mandals of the state for the three IIITs

at Basra, Nuzvid and Idupulapaya for the six year integrated

residential B.Tech course is most significant. (Creating forward

linkage with nationalized banks for education loans enabling the

students to pursue their education unhindered is also a step in

the right direction.)

ii) Announcement of a scheme to select the top 1000 students

passing SSC from govt. schools from 2008-09 onwards to

award monthly scholarships of Rs.300 till they complete their

PG education in any chosen branch of education by Tirumala

Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) is another instance of recognition

of the disadvantaged students.

iii) Sponsoring students from govt. schools securing excellent

marks in SSC to private junior colleges for Intermediate

education paying for their hostel, tuition fee and study material

by a number of District Collectors is yet another case of

acceptance of this ground reality.

iv) Selecting 118 students from the Govt. Junior Colleges, 5 from

each district, scoring highest marks in Intermediate and

awarding a one-time scholarship of Rs.10,000 to each of them

by APNA Foundation (NRI Fdn.) is another example.

Govt. of A.P. also issued GOs waiving tuition fee and enhancing monthly

scholarships for higher education for certain sections of the society with

annual parental income of Rs.1.00 lakh or less. (By the time these GOs

were issued, admissions were completed in respect of several cours es

collecting the tuition fee. Therefore, BREAD scholarships were awarded

only to those who actually paid tuition fee.)

BREAD Society adopted a new method of reaching out to the eligible

scholars during the year. A-4 size color posters were got printed

specifying the eligibility criteria separately for each course and

indicating the last date for submission of „Application Form‟ for BREAD

Scholarship. 7 different Posters, numbering in all 1500, were got printed

for the 7 separate streams of courses. These Posters were sent along

with a copy of the „Application Form‟ to the concerned Principals of Govt.

and aided colleges in the state requesting them to display the Poster in

their Notice Boards. BREAD Society‟s Mentor-Coordinators interacted

with the Principals of major colleges to ensure that the Posters were

displayed in the college Notice Boards.

BREAD Scholars 2008 were selected based on the following eligibility

criteria.

Education up to SSC in a government or fully aided high school.

Present education in a government or fully aided college.

To have cleared all qualifying tests in the current year in the first

attempt.

For Intermediate Scholarship: Minimum 85 % marks in SSC for

boys and 83% for girls.

For B.Sc. Scholarship: (a) Minimum 85% marks in SSC &

Intermediate for boys and 83% for girls.

For B.A/B.Com Scholarship: Minimum 85% marks in SSC and

80% marks with Arts group or 85% marks with Science group in

Intermediate for boys and 83 % and 78% for girls as applicable.

For Polytechnic Scholarship: (a) CEEP Rank within 4000 for

boys and 8000 for girls.

For D.Ed. Scholarship: (a) DIET CET Rank within 500 for both

boys and girls.

For D.Pharm. Scholarship: CET Rank within 100 for both boys

and girls.

For B.Tech/MBBS/BDS/B.Pharm/B.Sc.(Nursing)/B.Sc.(Ag)

etc. Scholarship: EAMCET/ECET Rank within 4000 for boys

and 8000 for girls.

v For PG-NP (M.Sc./M.A./M.Com./M.C.A.) & B.Ed. Scholarship:

Admission to free seats through CET fulfilling all the eligibility

criteria for the award of a BREAD Scholarship to „Intermediate‟

and „Undergraduate Non-Professional‟ courses.

The Selection Committee conducted interviews at 21 different venues in

October/ November 2008. They met about 1900 old and new scholars

and counseled them besides awarding scholarships. The places

covered were Kurnool, Anantapur, Proddatur, Tirupati, Ongole, Guntur,

Vi jay awada, Vuy y uru, Tanuk u, K ak inada, Nars ipatnam ,

Visakhapatnam, Bheemli, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Haveli Ghanpur,

Nizamabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Secunderabad and Hyderabad.

Mrs. Rajani Uppala, Mr. D. Satyanarayana Rao, Dr. Raavi Sarada, Dr.

Jayani Nehru, Dr. P. Rammohan Rao, Mr. C. S. Jaya Sekhar, Mr. Mohan

Kumar Kolluru, Mrs. Hema Kolluru, Dr. Md. Sikinder Hayath. Mrs. Susila

Kakani, and Mrs. Hemantha Kakani attended the interviews at various

places. They were assisted by the Treas urer and Secretary. All of them

met their own travel and incidental expenses.

The Society identified several Voluntary Mentor-Coordinators willing to

take on the responsibility of mentoring the BREAD scholars and also to

tie up activities such as organizing interviews and getting trees planted

in the colleges/hostels in close coordination with the Principals of

colleges. The Society now has active Mentor-Coordinators in almost all

districts. Some of them were instrumental in interacting with the

Principals of various colleges and informing the BREAD scholars about

the interview schedules. All of them helped in conducting the interviews

and mentoring the scholars. They are Mr. Anil Kumar Dat, Mr. M. Ratnaji

Rao, Mr. S.T. Chaitanya, Mr. Chundru Janakiram Prasad, Mr. Mandava

Principals of various educational institutions not only provided all the

facilities but also took active part in the proceedings and counseled the

scholars.

Govt. of A.P. has established Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKC) in

many accredited Govt. Degree Colleges in all districts of the State to

impart training in soft skills to undergraduate students. The duration of

the course is 45 days for 4 hours a day. The fee charged is Rs.750 out of

which Rs.350 is towards tuition fee and Rs.400 is for the study material.

BREAD Society has provided the study material of Rs.400 to each

scholar for this training during 2008-09. Acquisition of „Soft skills‟ has

assumed great significance in the present context.

The Society has received Rs.33.75 lakh as donations during the year. In

addition, interest received on Education Fund and Corpus Fund to the

extent of Rs.6.05 lakh gets credited to the concerned donors‟ accounts,

adding up to a total of Rs.39.80 lakh. Details are given below.

TANA Foundation has been transferring the individual donations of NRIs

to BREAD Society without levying charges for the incidental expenses

that they might be incurring on this account. This is an important factor in

our ability to mobilize Rs. 10.74 lakh from NRIs like Dr. Sarat

Kondapaneni, Dr. Ganga C Choudary, Dr. Ashok Kache, Mr. Amarendra

Duvvur, Dr. Parimala Nacharaju and others.

Cincinnati Telugu Foundation (CTF) with a small membership base has

all along been supporting us with contributions regularly. They were in

fact the first to have come up with the idea of matching the donations

from its members partially with its own funds. They have contributed

Rs.3.67 lakh this year as compared to Rs.2.96 lakh of last year and

Rs.1.36 of the year earlier to that.

It would not have been possible to handle about 1900 current scholars

without the support system created through the versatile database. We

are able to generate any type of information be it with reference to

donors, scholars, donations, accounts, academic performances,

educational institutions etc. Our database created and managed by our

Treasurer has been the single most important factor for the efficiency

and efficacy of our delivery system.

Complete information about the details of the fresh scholarships

awarded, renewals made based on the excellent academic

performance of old scholars and the disqualifications owing to the

unsatisfactory performance of some of them have been furnished to the

respective sponsors and donors. Each and every sponsor/donor has

also been provided an up to date account of the donations, disbursals

and balances standing to their credit after completing the awards during

2008-09.

We received donations amounting to Rs.33.75 lakh during the year

indicating that our donor base has got stabilized at around Rs.35 lakh

per annum. We received a massive donation of Rs.1.25 crore last year.

We are in the process of utilizing that donation over a period of next two

or three years. It can be reasonably expected that our major donors will

continue to support us.

We awarded 945 fresh scholarships valued at Rs.25.26 lakh and

renewed 932 scholarship valued at Rs.30.10 lakh during the year. The

total amount of disbursements of Rs.55.36 lakh on account of

scholarships compares favourably with that of last year‟s amount of

Rs.45.25 lakh.

In addition, we have spent on account of training in soft

skills to BREAD Scholars during the year. This money was spent out of

the savings on interest accruals and was not debited to individual

donor‟s accounts. A substantial part of the amount was spent on

purchase and distribution of a „Spoken English‟ book to scholars.

BREAD has come out with its first quarterly electronic Newsletter in July

2006 and is bringing it out regularly in the first week of every quarter.

BREAD REVIEW 2007-08 and BREAD Manual 2008 are the new

publications which have been widely circulated. BREAD Manual 2008

has been published with Telugu translation to ensure that all the BREAD

scholars read, understand and find it easy to follow the guidance given

to them. Scholars have also been advised to show it to their parents so

that they too would understand the significance of the activities of the

BREAD Society for the wellbeing of their wards.

Mr. B Purnachandra Rao continues to manage the website voluntarily in

spite of his busy schedule.

BREAD Society has o pened a Savings Bank Flexi Account with Andhra

Bank, Gagan Mahal Branch, Hyderabad. On a request from us, the

Head office of Andhra Bank has been providing the following facilities

from 2006-07 onwards on a regular basis.

During the current year, the Bank has printed special cheque books for

BREAD Society with the superscription „payable at par‟, thus ensuring

that the scholars receive full payment against cheques issued to them.

Services rendered by the Andhra Bank to BREAD Society need to be

commended because scholars are able to open savings bank accounts

with minimum balances and are able to get instant payment of

scholarship amounts.

Notes to the Accounts :

1) The Financial Statements are prepared under historical cost and accrual basis.

2) Depreciation on fixed assets has been provided on written down value method.

3) Major part of Scholarships given during the year is out of Education fund as per Donors wishes a nd Committee

resolutions.

4) Previous year’s Corpus Fund is now re-classified as Earmarked Fund.

5) Bank accounts are Flexi Accounts, the excess amounts are going to fixed deposits and hence the n egative balances

are not really negative.

6) During the year Rs.30.00 Lakhs is transferred from Education Fund to Scholarships account for Renewa l of

Scholarships.

7) Banker (UCO Bank) wrongly credited to our account of Rs.1,45,291/- this amount will revert to UCO bank in 2009-10.
