Supplies

Ø 2 different ½ yd cuts of 44” fabric of quilting cotton for children 6 and under. (You will probably need more for an older child.)

Ø elastic preferably non-roll (either ½” or ¾”) Ø thread Ø trim and two buttons (optional)

Measure Measure from your child’s waist to where you want the skirt to fall on the child. So for the first skirt I made for my four year old I got a measurement of 12”- measuring from her waist to her knees. Then add 1”. This is the length you will be cutting your two skirt pieces. Cut

Page 3: Reversible Skirt Tutorial 2

Now either using a rotary cutter or scissors cut along the width the fabric the length that you got in the step above. So, for example I cut these two 13” x 44”. Place fabrics on top of each other to make sure they are the same width. Some fabrics are slightly wider than others. Trim if necessary. (If your child has a waist measurement great than around 22” you will probably need to cut two pieces instead of just the one. You want cut a width about 2x greater than your child’s waist to get a nice twirly effect. So, if your child has a waist of 26”, you will want to cut two pieces so that added together you get a total of 52”.) Sew Optional: If you want to add some little pockets like I made on my skirt, this is when you will add them.

1a) Cut two pieces of fabric 5” x 9”.

2a) Take one of your pocket pieces and fold together along the short edges so that the right sides are facing. 3a) Sew along the edges using a ¼” seam allowance leaving a space so that you can flip it inside out. Trim the corners so that the corners will come out nice and neat.

4a) Flip inside out, push out corners, and press.

5a) Now fold down one of your corners at the top so that it is about 1 ½” away from the opposite edge and pin down. Repeat this for the other pocket but fold the corner on the opposite side.

6a) Stitch this corner down along the edge backstitching at the edges and repeat with the other pocket.

7a) Pick which skirt piece you want to add the pockets to and measure about 2 ½”-3 ½” down from the top of the skirt. Find the center of the skirt piece by folding in half and place the pockets about 3” away on either side of the center, so that there will be about 6” between the two pockets. You can adjust this depending on your preferences. Pin the pockets to the skirt.

9a) Now sew along the edges of the pocket from one corner of the flap to the other side of the flap pivoting along the corners as you go. Backstitch at each end a couple of times to make sure it is extra secure. Add buttons to the flaps if desired. This is the end of the pocket construction. Sewing the Skirt

1) Fold one skirt piece so that the short ends meet up and right sides are together. Sew together using a ½” seam allowance. Repeat for the other skirt piece.

2) Take your two skirt pieces (now tubes) and put one inside of the other so that right sides are facing each other. Match up the two side seams and pin them together along the top. Sew together using a ½” seam allowance. 3) Turn the pieces inside out so that the wrong sides are now facing together. And iron the waistband so it is nice and flat making sure one side doesn’t peep out more than the other. 4) You are now going to make the casing for the elastic. Sew along the top edge of your skirt as close to the edge as you can. (This is to help keep each side in place and not roll to the other side.) Then depending on what size elastic you are using you will sew another line the size of your elastic plus ¼” below the row of stitching you just made. So if you are using ¾” elastic you will sew a line of stitching 1” below the row of stitching you just made. Sew all the way around until get about a 1 ½” from the other side and backstitch. This space is where you will insert your elastic. 5) Measure your child’s waist and cut a piece of elastic this size. So for my 4 year old I cut a piece about 19 ½” long and for my two year old I cut a piece about 18 ¾”. Using a safety pin insert the elastic through the space you left at the top and thread through. Sew the elastic together at the ends and now go back and finish stitching the space that you inserted the elastic in.

6) Almost done! Now fold the bottom part of each of your skirt pieces to the wrong side about ½” and iron. Try to be as precise as possible because you want each of your skirt pieces to be the same length.

7) Pin the bottom pieces together and topstitch together about ¼” away from the edge. You can also insert some trim in between the skirt pieces at this time or add the trim afterwards to one side at the bottom like I did.

Congratulations! You now have a reversible skirt!
