CANDID INTERVIEW

SAKET KRISHNA MBA 2012-14

With Suprika Ma’am

Avichal Sinha interviewed Mrs Suprika Srivastava

Avichal: Please tell us about your experience at SCIT.

I have been working with SCIT since 8 years. The journey so far has been very exciting. I have seen SCIT evolving through various phases. I like the collaborative learning environment in SCIT. Its various specialization streams actually offer students’ freedom of learning and also make them industry ready. Also from industry perspective, it is very useful. There has been a continuous research and development activity carried out by different faculties which makes the learning environment more effective. Its unique blend of IT and management gives SCIT competitive advantage over other B-schools.

Avichal: You have been organizing training programs like CAPM, Agile etc. In what way does it add value for students and college?

The basic motive of certification is to make students industry ready. They get familiar with various standards that exist in IT industry. Certifications like PMI actually help students to understand Project management fundamentals and real life implementation for the same. It also adds value to their CV which ultimately results in better placements.

Avichal: What changes do you suggest for SCIT?

Faculty Corner Reflections Nov 2012

One area where SCIT can improve is its innovation and research. Though significant amount of research activities are being carried out, we need to focus more on Innovation. Innovation is the new buzz word for IT world. Hence to sustain as a premier IT B-School, SCIT needs to promote innovation. Also collaboration with various companies will also help. There can be collaborative platform for students and faculties to co-innovate and research.

Avichal: How do you manage work life balance?

I manage my time table and follow it. Being a working woman, it sometime becomes very hectic schedule but after years of experience, I have learned to manage it! As work life balance plays very important role, person should know how to manage it efficiently.

Avichal: How would you compare your corporate stretch with the current educational period? Do you have any future plans?

(Thoughtfully) Both have their own roles to play (laughs). But, on a lighter note – academic parlance is a bit difficult. Here, simultaneously we need to undertake multiple tasks within a short time span. Also, meticulous job execution is more profound here. We also need to take good care of properly retaining every minute detail regarding institute’s affairs. Overall, I am happy with my work here, so, no major professional future plans for the time being!

Ferose, M.D., Sap Labs India when welcoming the 5,166 student participants at SAP Techniversity - the largest technology conference. He illustrated the transformative power of technology in flattening uneven socio-economic landscape of developing nations with examples like trac-o-vac, an app developed by SAP, which alerts the parents about vaccination schedule of children through sms, and Charitra, a portal that systemizes charity. “Each of you can be a winner, an innovator! Mobility and cloud has democratized technology”, he exhorted. The stage was set for the students to get a crash course on what it takes to create cutting edge applications.

Highlights of Techniversity: The event was broadly categorized into four aspects: Education Inspiration Innovation Excitement

“I congratulate SAP and SAP University Alliances for successfully organizing this event as part of the TechED 2012. keeping in mind the students' interest. I was very impressed with the judicious mix of sessions that formed part of the event. In particular the DemoJam by college students was the best because it gave the students a direct platform to collaborate and co-innovate with SAP. I thank you and the entire team of SAP-UA India and APJ for organizing and supporting the Techniversity. We eagerly look forward to participating in the next year's event.” -Prof S Vijaykumar Bharathi Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology

E-COMMERCE - An entire world at your fingertips!

Mekin Maheshwari, President-Engineering, Flipkart.com The chief engineer of India's leading online retail store, Flipkart.com. Mekin is a young person from Bangalore who has been instrumental in changing the buying behavior of Indians, online. Mekin talked about the importance of this technology assisted retailing in developing markets. The keyword of e-commerce is speed. However, there are various challenges to delivering products to customers in time. Unreliability of suppliers means that companies have to forecast demand and plan inventory accordingly. Describing the delivery process, he demonstrated the e-tracking operation that Flipkart.com has implemented. BIG DATA –The bigger the better!

Jeff Word – Vice President, SAP Have you been curious about SAP HANA? We have Jefferey Word, SAP VP, global HANA evangelist, author of SAP HANA Essentials, and a person who describes himself as the corporate judo master, and a cheerleader for crazy ideas, to help you understand this revolutionary new In-memory technology which will leave all other database ideas on the mat. Jeffery Word, SAP's in-house HANA guru, provided the students a brilliant introduction to in-memory computing, and how it is changing conventional ideas about databases. “Experience at Techniversity Bangalore 2012 has been very good. It was. The best take away from the event is to "be a job provider rather than a job seeker" and make India a hub of innovation.” -Richa Rajput, Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology, Pune ENTREPRENEURSHIP - Transform innovations into businesses! Encouraging entrepreneurship is extremely important in a country like India. Thus, a panel discussion with leading Indian entrepreneurs was organized for the students. Before the start of the discussion, SAP announced a partnership with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), an organization which supports high-growth. The discussion with the successful entrepreneurs was

very interesting and the students learnt the trials and tribulations through which many of them had set-up their business ventures. However, the panelists agreed that by and large India has become a more entrepreneur friendly society. As, K Srikrishna, from NeN, said, “Entrepreneurship is hot!” INSPIRATION

One of the Indian cricketers who scored centuries in all 3 formats of the game. He has become the mainstay of Indian lower-middle-order in one day international and 20-20 matches. Techniversity had its garnish of sports with Suresh Raina, a leading Indian cricketer chatting with the students. Mr Sunder Madakshira interviewed him and asked exiting questions. The answers from Raina were like his excellent cricket strokes! Audience loved the conversation a lot. “Vishy, the tiger from Channai” is the “One man Indian Chess revolution” whose intellectual genius made him the youngest Indian to win the title of International Master at the age of fifteen. Viswanathan Anand, the undisputed Five time World Chess Champion, a speaker at SAP Techniversity stressed on a few extremely important ingredients to success: discipline, learning from failures, and importance of curiosity. “If failure is painful, it will be your teacher. I kept on missing the grand-master mark for one and half years. But I kept on trying. Ultimately, when I became a grand-master, I realized that this is just the starting point of a journey, and not the end of one”, he said to enthusiastic cheers from the young audience.

“DEMO Jam is so far the best competition event, I have ever attended. It was really an honour for me and my teammates to be there and present our product in front of more than 5000 people. My hearty thanks to SAP for providing me such a great platform.” -Varun Mankodi Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology INNOVATION: SAP strongly believes in innovation. It’s innovation which has and will be driving the world. “DemoJAM” was one of the key events of SAP Techniversity. Around 142 teams had registered for this competition, and two teams from SCIT made it to the grand finale among the top 6 teams selected. Team Blitzkrieg and Team Ignite from SCIT, under the excellent guidance from Prof. SVK Bharathi showcased their brilliant demos of their products. Team Blitzkrieg presented their demo “BliNGO – The collaborative platform for NGOs, CSRs, SSR and Individuals”. The

response from the audience was immense and it set the ground for win ahead. Team Ignite showcased their demo “ITUS – Information Tracking and Utility System” with excellent presentation skills. It was a perfect combination of the techno-managerial stuff which SCIT is known for. The winning team was to be decided by audience poll where Team Ignite topped the list and defeated the other two teams from Bangalore who had a huge local crowd support. “SCIT is the Winner of the first edition of DemoJAM India”. The project with which team Ignite won the prestigious competition was a unique accident detection system. “Though already there are a lot of systems for detecting accidents available, like detecting accidents through pressure sensors, smartphone apps etc.; still the market is hugely untapped. Our approach was to focus on the rpm pattern of the engine as a way to detect accidents. For example, the pattern in which the rpm falls can indicate whether the fall is due to an accident or due to brake, this is because if you run a car into an obstacle while the engine is running, the engine will come to an abrupt stop; however a brake by driver will cause a much slower decrease in rpm regardless of the brake applied. Then add other sensors for brake, gear, clutch, along with GPS location... we can easily pin point when the accident happened. So, a transmitter in car sending the status of car over RF waves would bring down the cost of production as we have no processing at terminal end. A server can process all the signals sent by the transmitters at back end and alert the nearest hospital and police station using the GPS location of the last transmitted signal. Add to this the registration of the user, we can even have the blood group that will be needed at the accident site.” -Karthik Nedunchezhian Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology

The winning team was awarded a cash prize of INR 1,00,000, the first runner-up INR 30,000 and the second runner-up, a cash prize of INR 20,000. The 4th, 5th and 6th teams also got a gift voucher of Rs 10,000 each. All team members of the 6 finalist teams got a SAP certificate acknowledging their achievement. But the biggest award hat night was that the top two winning teams got invited to Global SAPPHIRE at Orlando next May. The members of the 6 finalist teams are eligible for an internship interview opportunity with SAP labs India.

2nd Dec 2012 (Lavale Campus): First match of the day and fourth of the Leather White ball tournament and it was yet another high energy day on the field. Some mind blowing performances with the bat and ball. Everyone put their best efforts from both sides, but in the end only one team have to win the match. Match Summary: SSBM V/s SCIT: SSBM won the toss and decided to bat first. • 1st Innings: SSBM 192/3 in 20 overs

Top Scorer: Sagar J (SSBM) – 113 runs Top Wicket taker (SCIT): Anupam – 3 wickets

• 2nd Innings: SCIT 178/9 in 20 overs

Top Scorer (SCIT): Anupam – 34 runs Top Wicket taker (SSBM): Anchal – 4 wickets

Result: SSBM won the match by 15 runs. While chasing the huge target set by SSBM, SCIT put on a good fight and came rather close to chasing down the stiff target. They eventually fell short by 15 runs. The commitment and team spirit shown by everyone was really appreciated. We believe that this match will pave a path to form a strong as well as more dedicated team for the upcoming tournaments where we will showcase our mettle.

As it is said about Marathon "The thirst you feel in your throat and lungs will be gone minutes after the race is over. The pain in your legs within days, but the glory of your finish will last forever." Students of SCIT had an opportunity to experience being part of a Marathon. Team SSR participated and also invited entries from the students for the 3.5km AIDS Charity Run as part of the 27th Pune International Marathon held on 2nd December 2012. Students from the senior and junior batch registered for the event. The chilly winter morning started with bus journey from the SIC campus organized by the team SSR till the starting point of the run. Everyone in their white marathon t-shirts and cap enthusiastically started off the run around 9.00am.

The distance of 3.5 km was covered by most of the students in around 40 minutes with a combination of running, walking and jogging. Team SSR had put in efforts to prepare posters on AIDS awareness which were demonstrated during the run. On the way to the finishing point, came across many other participants of the marathon from various age groups including senior citizens taking part with fervour.

People from various organizations and colleges who were part of the marathon had gathered at the finishing point, the Nehru Stadium. To the relief of the panting runners water bottles were provided at the finishing point. There were cultural programs organized at the stadium and also the award ceremony for the winners. Like any other SSR event, the marathon was fun filled experience along with a cause associated with it.

The most waited session of “Drishtikon: Management Club of SCIT” on internship experiences got delivered on 26 Nov 2012. The main agenda behind the session was to make students of batch 12-14 aware of various aspects of internship and addressing their concerns by throwing lights on some common issues students may face. There were 5 speakers and the focus was to cover all possible diverse profiles of various domains, in addition to their experience during internship. The questions such as, what are the profiles I can opt for in my specialization, what the market trends? If I do internship in some domain other than my specialization, will it be helpful? Where is the learning more, in start-up firms or in big companies? What kind of work we can expect during internship in sales and marketing profile? If we do internship in manufacturing domain for ERP profile, will it be helpful and justifiable as an MBA-IT graduate? All such questions were meticulously addressed. Vageesh Srivastava one of the attendees of this session said, “We juniors got a chance to hear our seniors, who did their internship in different domains like Systems, Security, and SSM etc. They not only shared their valuable experiences of internships with us, but also cleared our doubts regarding how to select and how to approach a particular intern quite diligently and articulately.” The session was very well organized and designed in a way to encourage maximum participation and interaction amongst the attendees and the speakers. Later half part of the session was a bit informal, wherein students were approaching to the speakers of their respective domains to seek one to one guidance and solve their doubts. “The purpose of the session was fulfilled in all means by active participation from juniors, and I hope it helped them to further contour their career. We look forward for further interactions with juniors in the upcoming events” said Avichal Sinha – The Core member from Drishtikon. In all ways the session was fruitful to all the students of batch 12-14, and hats off to seniors and specially Drishtikon team for all the support and guidance; to mention a few Avichal Sinha, Devesh Mathur, Rajeev Gupta, Sahil Khurana, Ankul Bagati, Saurabh Singh, Abhay Patodi and Anupam Prasad who made this session possible.

With a fast paced life out in Pune, MRA came as a meaningful pause to help us introspect and delve deeper into our hearts and minds and learn from each other’s experiences in life. The Moral Re-Armament Camp for 2012-2014 Batch was one of the most memorable, enjoyable as well as a learning experience.

Catching the bus for the beautiful Panchgani reminded us of our first trip together –Suryashibir, where we hardly knew each other and were just batch mates. But unlike Suryashibir, now we were friends travelling together. So we were thrilled to enjoy it together. On reaching the beautiful landscape of Panchgani, we were fondly welcomed by Joshi uncle, Riya, Siddharth and the entire team of IOfC. We were allotted respective rooms – girls in Valley View and boys the Rock View building. Awesome rooms and awesome weather – a good combo to start off our 4-day trip!! We were divided into families and tasks were chalked out to us for the forthcoming days. After a brief introduction, we had a great lunch to appease our appetite and hunger. Then came the fun part – trekking to the Tabletop!!! One after the other we followed each other to our much awaited destination. The chilled water in the lake, the horse riding, beautiful scenery and the blushing red sunset – made it an exclusive trip. On returning, we had an exquisite dinner followed by a ‘family meet’.

Second day we had family meetings, our servings and dish-washing while loudly singing songs at the top of our voices, preparing tables for the next meal, so beautifully co-ordinated, playing unique games, learning about the multitude of cultures associated with Asia Plateau (IOfC) team, catching up with its members from across the world and of course clicking numerous photos. Third day we also experienced a tinge of rural life in ‘Grampari’. The experience of using “Tippy taps” and actually being a helping hand in the chores there was unique in itself. We did cultural programs for the Asia Plateau team for paying them gratitude for the time they invested on us. Last day we had very good interaction with our fellow friends by knowing them inside out and knowing a part of them we never expected we would ever get a chance to know. And we are sure even they never imaged sharing their emotions publicly yet feeling happy to share it with us - a true family indeed. We still have an open invitation to IOfC from the Asia Plateau team extending for lifetime!!! A special thanks to Kiran Sir and Ganesh Sir for being a part of us and gelling with us like one of us! The best thing about this trip was we were made to realize how we can listen to our inner self to find solutions to problems. “Initiatives of change” it was!!! Students actually felt some change or the other within themselves. The relationships’ session gave us very touchy moments of people's life and some incidents made us wonder as to how people muster up the courage to go against the odds. “Kudos to the people who did it and a sense of can-do spirit to all others who will.” Though the definition of being successful might hold different meaning to all of us, but the sense of lightness that we all share from this experience out here will provide the right thrust to take our journey forward with a positive frame of mind and stronger cohesiveness with our inner-self’s. The learning from the trip summarized would be something like this: Listening to our ‘Chatterbox”; removing filters of “I already know”, “it’s not possible”, “judging”, “looking good”, “take it personally” from our thoughts; inner listening – Connection, Correction followed by Direction; removing mental blocks and not to lose focus; to realize what we are good at, what are we passionate about and the needs of the world we dwell in and how we can combine these three to contribute to the world.

Why is IT becoming a necessity in today’s competitive markets? What will be the role of IT in business strategic decisions in near future? What are the future inclinations in IT that will drive the business needs? – “Emerging Trends in IT” was the answer for all these scorching questions. It was an interactive & informative guest lecture session conducted by Mr. Ram Potti (Assistant Consultant, Tata Consultancy Services) on 25th of November, 2012. He enlightened the present audience with the 4 most budding drifts that are going to be the IT buzzword in the next decade – Big Data, In Memory Computing, Cloud and Mobility. Regarding Big Data, he made the intellectual crowd understand the various challenges faced such as capturing, treatment, storage, search, sharing, analysis visualization & their solution by taking examples of social networking portals which experience huge network traffic flowing through them round the clock. As informed by Mr. Ram, right now it is the era of smart phones – but without Mobility (or mobile applications) they will not find much appreciation or flexibility. Mobility is one of the interesting and fastest growing fields in the area of information technology. From the days of early computing, currently world is on the brink of combining the goodness of exuberant computing power & on – the – go communication in one single device. This amalgamation is mainly driven by advancement in nano – technology. In memory computing and cloud solutions are revolutionizing the complete IT global perspective. On one side, they have empowered the industries to concentrate on their key competencies thereby mounting the comfort & luxuries of worldwide population and on the other, they are promoting the “Green IT “concept – thereby reducing global carbon footprint so as to make our mother earth a better place to live in for many generations to come.

Another main aspect divulged by Mr. Potti was the advent of new industrial concept of “BYOD” (Bring Your Own Device). It drives the employees to be much more responsible & cautious regarding the execution of their roles & duties at the workplace. Technically, he also shed a light upon the 4 major facets on any IT implementation within an organization i.e. information security, software solutions, infrastructure & systems (ex. ERP). He discussed their needs, requirements that need to be taken care of and advantages leveraged by these entities if realized correctly & efficiently. Overall, it was a duly edifying session & industry leaders like Mr. Ram Potti play a pivotal role in giving real insights to the budding managers about the industry practices, how to shape their career in future & enabling them to make a smooth transition from academia to the corporate world.

It might be already too late to mend, Pray to God that a masiha he send,

To lend us a much needed helping hand.

Do prepare for the worst, yet hope for the best, Keep your loved ones close to your chest,

People call it an omen, people call it a curse. People think its bad, which I think is very sad. Which disease gives you so much time! Which disease lets you complete all your wishes & make you divine. How many people will you find going satisfied!!! Not many people are special whom HE gives time. You still think its an omen, you still thinks its a curse. You still think its bad, then I think its very sad. They need your time, they need your care. They need your love, hence the gradual death curve. HE blesses you, HE prepares you, HE saves you from a shock. HE doesnot make you feel helpless & outside a door which is locked. HE gives you the opportunity to help the needy, But HE still reminds you that HE is the almighty. You still thinks its an omen, you still think its a curse. You still thinks its bad, then I think its very sad. They gives you enough time to do your best, They give you suffering enough to take your test, How many are luck enough to take the test? How many are courageous enough to pass it!!! Not many, not many, not many!!!
