Revelation 17 . . .

“Apocalyptic literature is a special kind of writing that arose among Jews and

Christians to reveal certain

mysteries about heaven

and earth, humanity and God, angels and demons, the life of the world today, and the world to come.”

Apocalyptic literature “reveals” these mysteries

through the use of

visions and highly

symbolic language.

What John SEES (vv. 1-6)

A woman (a great prostitute)

A beast

Revelation 17:1-2Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.”

What John SEES

Revelation 17:3-4And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.

Revelation 17:5-6And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.” And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her, I marveled greatly.

What the angel SAYS (beast)

Revelation 17:3I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast … and it had seven heads and ten horns.

Revelation 13:1And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads …


Revelation 13:5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words . . .

Revelation 17:3And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemousnames . .


Revelation 13:8And all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.


Revelation 17:8And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast.


The beast upon which the great prostitute sits is none other than the

first beast mentioned in Revelation 13 –the Antichrist!


-The beast’s 7 heads

Revelation 17:9-10This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while.

Revelation 17:11As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction.

Revelation 17:12-13And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings for one hour, together with the beast. These are of one mind, and they hand over their power and authority to the beast.

Revelation 17:14They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them,

for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.

What the angel SAYS (woman)

Two interpretive keys

1. Sexual immorality is often used in Scripture as an image to refer to spiritual idolatry.


Jeremiah 5:7How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of whores.




2. Babylon is used in Scripture to refer to more than just a geographical city … it is a particular mindset.


The name given to this woman?

Revelation 17:5“Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.”


Babylon derived from word “babel” (Tower of Babel –

Genesis 11)

2. Babylon is used in Scripture to refer to more than just a geographical city … it is a particular mindset.


1. The great prostitute has a powerful and universal influence!


Revelation 17:1“Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters…

Revelation 17:15And the angel said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages.


Revelation 17:18And the woman that you saw is the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.


1. The great prostitute has a powerful and universal influence!

2. This powerful and universal influence will one day end and end decisively!


Revelation 17:1

Come, I will show you the judgmentof the great prostitute who is seated on many waters…


Revelation 17:16And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the prostitute. They will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire . . .


Revelation 17:17For God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.

Our God is an awesome God! Even the choices of evil men are not outside the

domain of HIS sovereignty and HISprovidential plan!

Proverbs 21:1The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.

Psalm 2:3-4“Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in

the heavens laughs.

Our God is an awesome God! Even the choices of evil men are not outside the

domain of HIS sovereignty and HISprovidential plan!

This evil world system (with all of its trappings/idols) will seductively

attempt to pull you away from your allegiance to God … so beware!

Matthew 6:24No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
