In support of the Academy’s objective of Academic Excellence, and the National Initiative of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) the Board of Trustees has established a Faculty Chair to be known as the Board Chair in Physical Science. The Chair will be funded by an endowment pledge by the Board of Trustees.

Concurrently, Dr. Jean‐Francois Rossignol, newest member of the Board of Trustees, and a world renowned scientist,

agreed to fund the Rossignol Chair in Science. The Faculty members to occupy the chairs will be named by the Academic Committee chaired by the Headmaster, CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr.

In addition to the annual financial reward that each recipient will receive from a percentage of the earnings of the endowment, an equal amount will be awarded to the faculty compensation fund. Future Chairs will be announced as they are gifted and created.

THE ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

This past November, the Board of Trustees established new by‐laws requiring a rotating board of trustees with term limits, in addition they added ex‐officio members. The new board is chaired by George Michel, class of ‘49. George J. Michel, Jr. ’49 – Chairman

Mr. Michel is a retired Chairman & CEO of a multi‐national Fortune 500 Company, with over 38 years of experience in all phases of corporate management in industrial companies engaged in metalworking and electronics serving a wide cross‐section of domestic and foreign markets. He is a Life Trustee of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts; Dean’s Advisory Board MIT Sloan School of Management; Member, MIT Corporate Development Committee; Director, South Florida Science Museum; Member, Board of Advisors of the Whitehead Institute, and a Director of numerous private corporations.

Mr. Michel attended both Campuses of Admiral Farragut Academy, graduating in 1949 from the Southern Campus, and was the Battalion Commander in both his Jr. and Sr. years. He is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was employed by the National Security Agency and served as First LT with the US Army. In 1980 he received the MIT Corporate Management Award. Mr. Michel is married to Pauline and has three children and nine grandchildren.

Richard Gene Wheeler

Mr. Wheeler has long served on the Board of Trustees for the Admiral Farragut Academy South, Inc., and is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board. He graduated with a BA from the University of Missouri and MA from Washington University in 1966. He retired as a LT Colonel in the US Army in 1969 after a twenty‐two year career. Mr. Wheeler has been part of Admiral Farragut Academy since 1972. He began as a faculty member until 1976 when he became Headmaster. In 1995 the Board of Trustees appointed him as Rear Admiral. Some of his memberships and awards include Military Affairs Committee; Kiwanis International; Treasure Island Civic Association; Reserve and Retired Officers Association; Bronze Star Medal; Purple Heart; Army Commendation Medal; and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross (Gold and Silver). He is married to the former Louisa Hardy and has three children and four grandchildren.

Claudia Sokolowski

Ms. Claudia Sokolowski has been a member of the Admiral Farragut Board of Trustees for years and presently serves as Secretary. She is a 1970 graduate of South Florida University with a BA degree. Her family owns and operates Great Bay Distributors, Inc. in Pinellas County and West Pasco County, Florida where she is a Vice‐President. Claudia also serves on the Board of Trustees of All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, as well as serving as the Chairman of the All Children’s Health System Board. She is married to Robert L. Sokolowski and they have two sons, Douglas (AFA ’90) and Matthew (AFA ’92) and four grandchildren. They are members of the Blue Jacket Club of Admiral Farragut Academy.

Robert R. Klingel

Mr. Klingel was born in New Jersey and moved to Madeira

Beach, Florida where he graduated from Seminole High School and earned his BS degree in biology from Elon University.

Mr. Klingel works in the family business, TSE Industries. TSE Industries is the world’s largest producer of millable urethane rubber, sold under the trade name Millathanel that is also a manufacturer of polyurethane’s and related chemicals.

Mr. Klingel is married to Diane and they have three sons, all of whom are involved in the family business.

Teresa D. Curry

Ms. Curry is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a BS and MA degree. Ms. Curry has been involved with the education system since graduating from college in 1979. She has taught emotionally handicapped students in Kindergarten through 12th grades in Hillsborough and Orange County Public Schools. She was also the Principal and Head of School/Owner of Brandon Academy from which she retired. She continues to serve on the Florida Educational Standards Commission and Early Learning Advisory Board as well as Hillsborough County Advisory Board, all appointed positions. Some of her Memberships and awards are Elim Temple, Daughters of the Nile; Macy’s Department Store Advisory board; Brandon Chamber of Commerce; Brandon Community Golf Committee; Florida Council of Independent Schools; and continues to serve as Chair for Accreditation Evaluation Committees. Ms. Curry is married to attorney Cliff Curry and they have three children.

Laurence B. Upham

Laurence Upham is a 1953 graduate of Admiral Farragut Academy; a long time member of the Board of Trustees of the Academy. He is also the president of the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation, Inc. He has also served as past‐President of the Admiral Farragut Alumni Association. Mr. Upham graduated from Florida Southern College in 1957 and was commissioned a 2LT, Infantry Airborne, US Army. He recently retired as a LT Colonel after 27 years in the USAF Auxiliary. He also was in the insurance business for over 30 years. Mr. Upham has served as a Layman, Deacon, ordained Priest and Bishop over the past forty years. He is married to the former Kathryn Sprague and has four daughters and eleven grandchildren. Richard J. AFA BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Mr. DeWitt is a 1965 Farragut (South) graduate and the father of Richard J. DeWitt III a 1987 Farragut (South) graduate. He is a business and technology attorney practicing in Coral Gables, Florida. His practice is focused on serving as an arbitrator and mediator in domestic and international matters including commercial, civil, technology and employment disputes. Mr. DeWitt was formerly CEO of Quest Telecom, an Atlanta, GA switch‐based, telecommunications carrier he founded in 1991 that provided both domestic and international telecommunications services from facilities in the U.S. and Canada. He previously practiced law with the Shutts & Bowen and Squire, Sanders & Dempsey firms and as General Counsel of TeleAmerica Communications Corp. He also served as Chairman of the American Public Communications Council the national trade association for the public communications industry. As a national leader in the competitive telecommunications industry, he helped chart its future development as it emerged from deregulation. He currently serves as Chairman of the City of Coral Gables – Economic Development Board and on the boards of Coral Gables Bar Association, the Coral Gables Community Foundation, Mediators Beyond Borders and the commercial section of the Association for Conflict Resolution. He is also the founder and Chair of the Advanced Commercial Mediation Institute and is a Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators. Mr. DeWitt received his Bachelor of Arts from Florida International University and his Jurist Doctor from the University of Miami, School of Law.

He resides in Coral Gables with his wife Luba.

Dr. Jean‐Francois Rossignol, MD, PhD, FRSC

Dr. Rossignol is graduate of the Sorbonne and trained as a synthetic medicinal chemist and physician, leading to an accomplished career as a research scientist. He spent 2 years in academia in France and in the US before joining the pharmaceutical industry with Squibb Corporation in Princeton, NJ in 1987. In 1993, Dr. Rossignol co‐founded Romark Laboratories to develop one of his early inventions, nitazoxanide, considered the first of a new class of drugs called the thiazolides. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Managers and Chief Science Office with Romark. During his academic career, Dr. Rossignol developed albendazole, the first broad spectrum, single dose anthelminthis, and the antimalarial, halofantrine. Both drugs received regulatory approvals in many countries, including the US. Dr. Rossignol has held numerous full‐time adjunct faculty positions; published more than 100 articles in the scientific or medical journals; and is the recipient of 25 US Patents. For 11 years, he has served first as a consultant and later as an expert in parasitic diseases for the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, Dr. Rossignol is enjoys an affiliation with Stanford University School of Medicine. He resides in St. Petersburg, Florida with his wife, Patricia.

Wilmer M. Ifill ’37 ‐ Bud sent me an email. He said, “I just got off the phone with my roommate, BGEN Joseph L. Dickman ’35. He was unable to get to the last Gathering, but sends his best wishes. He has trouble getting around these days, but is spending his winters in Sarasota. I will bring him over for a visit if I can.” [email protected]. John D. Schenone ’40 – We received a nice letter from John. He read the new issue of REVEILLE (Sept.) and didn’t find any news from his classmates. He says, “I guess there aren’t many of us left. I know Tom Bush was trying to organize a homecoming…and then he died!” (John, we too miss Tom. His leaving us had nothing to do with his attempts to plan a nice homecoming for his ’40 classmates. Someone needs to pick up the ball and run with it. It’s never too late to have a nice reunion.) John is John Anthony Gardella’s cousin. The visited this past July in Toms river. He says they used to play trumpet together and had great times playing duets. John said, “I sent an article to AFA several years ago and the theme was IF THESE WALLS COULD SPEAK. I never heard any more about it. I wrote that even though I was a PG, that one year in AFA helped me in so many ways to be a better person.” (John, we wrote the full story you sent us in the September 2004 edition of REVEILLE. It was on page 8. I have mailed you a copy of this REVEILLE. I am sorry you missed it.) John continues, “My wife and I are both 86 and enjoy cruises several times a year. We have been on forty cruises. We have sailed

down one side of South America and up the other. We have cruised in South Africa, the Greek Islands, the Nile River, and the Mighty Amazon. Now we confine our cruises to the Caribbean.” John is now living with his daughter, who is a nurse, in Jensen Beach, FL. I think you can still contact John at his email address: [email protected]. Clayton S. Quimbach ’43 – Clayton sent us an update. He is living in Elkhart, Indiana having retired in 1992 after a career as a mechanical engineer with Ford Motor Company, Detroit, Michigan. Clayton said, “A note to an old Classmate. Sam Ogden, Commander, your picture looked so good. You were my Company Commander (#2) at AFA in 1942‐43. I was a 2nd Class Petty Officer and got ‘busted’ for improper table manners. That was a good lesson for all our actions there are consequences that follow. My biggest experience was when I defended the Union against Fort Motor Company and didn’t have tenure time established. Second level management was on the line. Walter Scott Blomeley ’45 – Walter sent us an invitation to his wedding October 13th. The invitation read, “Barbara Ann Wirey and Walter Scott Blomeley request the pleasure of your company at our nuptial celebration on Saturday, October

13, 2007 at 6:30 in the evening at Midway Church of Christ, 7226 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota,

Florida.” Walter and Barbara will continue living in Garden Lakes, Bradenton, Florida. Barbara’s husband Wendel died February 2006. Scotty’s wife, Jane, died January 2007 of emphysema and heart failure. Barbara has 4 sons and 2 daughters, 12 grandchildren and 12 great‐grandchildren. Walter Scotty has three daughters and one son, Scotty. Walter Scott has 10 grandchildren and 2 great‐grandchildren. Ralph Lee Smith ‘45 – Ralph sent us this information in October. He says, “I would like to add Farragut's great English teacher, Ken Sheesley. Ken's love of books and reading, and his encouragement of my infant writing efforts, had a more important impact on my life than that of any other teacher in either high school or college. I graduated from Swarthmore College

in 1951, majoring in English. By the late 50s, I had gravitated to Greenwich Village, where I lived through the 60s, making a modest living as a free lance writer. I won a number of major writing awards, including the National Magazine Award for Public Service, given by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. I also participated in the Folk Music Revival in the Village, playing the Appalachian dulcimer. In more recent times, my writing has been entirely in the fields of Appalachian music and history. My books include Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions and Songs and Tunes of the Wilderness Road. I also teach. This past summer, I was co‐director of Mountain Dulcimer Week in the Shenandoah Valley, at Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA. The event was a success. It is being held again at the University, July 6‐11, 2008. I'd love it if a few Farragut alums would come! David K. Sherb ’47 – We received an email from Dave. He said, “Hi, Bill, Just a not to thank you for all your work on the reunion and for your continuing efforts on behalf of the Alumni! Gail and I really enjoyed the program. The only thing that was

missing was watching Farragut win the football game. I guess we got spoiled 60 odd years ago when we got a lot of “ringers” destined for the Naval Academy. I am still looking for a 1947 Trident, so I would appreciate it if you would keep it in mind. Please send me whatever info you can about Al Frank. Chlebowski ’49 – Dan sent us an update. He and Janet (his bride of 51 years), live in Escondido, CA. Dan and Janet have 4 children (3 girls, 1 boy), 6 grandchildren (2 girls, 4 boys). Dan is now retired . He said, “I was a Design Engineer and was on a team to design and build a Hermetically‐Sealed Rotary Switch for LEM & Apollo Modules used by

“Hi, I live in Sarasota and am planning a day trip to St. Pete on Wed. 12 Sept. Since I graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy, in Pine Beach, in 1950, I haven't been in touch with AFA or the Alumnae Association. I have a few questions, please. Is it possible to tour the campus on that day? I would appreciate any info or suggestions you may have. Sorry about the short notice but only today did I find this website. Thanks.” (Bruce, I am sorry that I have no recollection about this before now. I apologize for letting it fall through the cracks. Perhaps you did make it by for a visit. CDR William P. Sutherland (BC) ’50 – Here is an email which was forwarded to us from Jack and Bob Morris ‘51. They had sent Bill Southerland a piece of academy literature. The email reads: “Dear Jack and Bob, I just received the AFA brochure you forwarded telling/showing all about life of the cadets and goals of the Academy. WOW! it is impressive. Makes me wish I had a grandson or two to send to AFA. I will keep it in case I run into a kid that would be worthy of attending. (Am still not sure that girls belong in a military academy but they do

Alden H. Elsea, BC ’51 – Alden sent us an email announcing the following good news: “Our first Great‐grandson, John David (J. D.) Shannon arrived at 12:45 this morning. Edward M. Hanna ’51 – We received an update from Edward. He and Yaeko have two sons. Their oldest is an engine specialist, auto mechanic residing in Atlanta, GA. Their youngest is a Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. He has two daughters ages, eight months, and 34 months. Edward is a Certified Public Accountant in the firms of Hanna, Lemar & Morris, CPA, P. A. He and

Bill Emerson ’52 – Bill was on hand at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on the Sunday following the ‘07 Alumni Homecoming reunion. He sent the following email to CAPT Tom McClelland, Head of the Naval Science Department: “Dear Tom, The photos shot with my Nikon are too big to send in an e‐mail. Thus, I sent them to you on a CD today (by US Mail.) Included are a number of photos from Melody’s small Nikon that may also be useful. Would you please see that Bill Monrose and the Cadets from the Color Guard all receive a copy of these pictures. It was a pleasure to share the car with them. I had the cadet who had won a Radford Star get into the driver’s seat FIRST! Something special for someone special. I explained that the car toured the US from NYC to LA in 10 days the first year I was at Farragut (1948). I was already interested in cars at that age. I came from a mango and avocado grove south of Miami and already knew how to drive a tractor and a truck!! Little did I know that someday I would have a car like the Healey‐Westland. At Farragut I learned to shine my shoes, polish my brass belt buckle, and the value of education. With the Healey I shine the body, and polish the chrome. Because the car is so unusual I made up a "Judges Reference Guide" to educate the judges on some of the unique features of the car. By educating the judges they do not deduct

points for features they have never seen before... Allowing me to WIN many "Best of Show" awards. EUDCATION IS IMPORTANT, even when you are educating someone else. . . (There was no "Best of Show" award Sundays but I did win 1st in class. . .) My thanks to you and members of the Color Guard for sharing a Veterans day celebration with a veteran of AFA and the US Army.” Bill Emerson Curator, The Healey Museum.”

Dr. Neal F. Johnson ’52 – Neal is a professor at Ohio State University. He called to tell me that one of our Northern Alums had died. His name is Josiah H. Blackmore II and he was the President of Capital University in Ohio. (See TAPS this Issue for details.) Neal also mentioned another alumni, Joseph Canzani ’35 who is the past President of the Columbus College of Art and Design. Neal said is 92 years old and is doing well. Frederick W. Lambach ’55 – We received an email from Fred’s wife, Cora. She said, “Fred and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary on October 27, 2007. We’ve been in Tucson, AZ for 16 years. Fred still works, and enjoys it. He says he’ll work until “they kick him out.” He obviously likes working. You can contact Fred and

Robert C. Waldman ’55 – Bob sent us some news over his Blackberry. He is always promoting AFA everywhere he goes. Here is the latest news: “I had occasion to talk to the executive officer, Captain Daniel Fillion XO of the USS Wasp

and asked him to send me a few photo's of him wearing the Farragut cap I gave him as gift when I had occasion to spend the day with him on the Wasp, quite a ship, I will also give you their web site so you can use the photo with some background on the ship. Perhaps you can speak to Bill for a mention in the next REVEILLE. I invited the Captain to visit Farragut when he visits the Saint Petersburg area. Walter H. Schenk ’56 – Walter and his wife, Phyllis are living in Huntingdon Valley, PA. Walter is a

Charles F. Cummins ’57 – Charles sent us an update. He is a retired Attorney living in Saratoga, CA. He and his wife Anne have been married 46 years and have 3 sons and 3 grandsons. His twin brother Harry B. Cummins ’57 died in 1984. He too had 3 sons and 3 grandsons. Charles said, “Congratulations and thanks to all who work at AFA. John J. Klopstock ’57 – John says, “Hi! My wife Vivian and I had high hopes of attending this years Homecoming and my 50th Reunion. However, something has just come

up which prevents us from attending. Actually the main reason for coming was to see a coach of mine who I haven't seen in over 50 years who now lives in the Tampa area. With perhaps the exception of "Diesel" Wyman ’56, who has at least kept in touch with the school all the other friends from 1957 have vanished from the radar. Namely: Rodger Chew, Dean Hunter, Robert John Alton, Jorge Cuellar, Robert McElrath, Herb Rivers, James Gass, Richard Fienburg, and Alan Rosenthal. Since I'm not into trying to impress anyone or visit a location I can't relate to except in name it's not a big deal. I do, however, want you to know that my four + years at AFA were a great foundation for the rest of my life. I don't believe I would have been nearly as successful without the discipline and wonderful education that the faculty provided in that special kind of intimate setting. Anyone who knew me knows that sports were my favorite "courses." Coach Slaby is not easy to forget. I do read "Reveille" and keep up with current activities. The last issue had a story of the class of 1964 dedicating a BRICK to CMDR Steele, must be from the South. Has one been dedicated to Coach Slaby? His online update provided us with the following: "I am Retired" (Sr. Vice President of Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan ‐ nations 20+ largest Consulting Engineering Firm)...as of January 2005...married to same lady for 45 years ‐ do a lot of hunting, wing shooting, sporting clays (I'm no golfer), travel and Harley riding. Charles F. Cummins ’57 – Charles sent us an update. He is a retired Attorney living in Saratoga, CA. He and his wife Anne have been married 46 years and have 3 sons and 3 grandsons. His twin brother Harry B. Cummins ’57 died in 1984. He too had 3 sons and 3 grandsons. Charles said, “Congratulations and thanks to all who work at AFA. M. Girard Kelly ’57 – We received an email from Jerry. He said, “Bill, I enjoy reading the Reveille. After following some of the stories, I decided it was time I pass on some tit‐bits with you. David Hansell ‘58 and I both met for our assignment to active duty tour in Brooklyn, NY for assignment. I had not seen or heard from him since he graduated from

AFA ‐N. (Too many years ago to remember). We were assigned to a new ship being built at Beth Ship yards in Quincy Mass. The ship was the USS FARRAGUT DLG 9. This was an exciting situation for us since we were both from AFA‐N. Dave and I were part of the first 40 men assigned to the ship to activate the FARRAGUT. We lived at the ship yard and were fortunate because the yard had an extended strike. (Great liberty for us every weekend). We were both on hand for the Christening and the shakedown cruise. I had donated some original photo and a plaque to AFA‐N. Do not know what happened to the when north closed. The crew stationed at Quincy had a contest to design the plaque, which became the crest for the ship. I was instrumental in having the yard forage the first batch of these plaques. One used to hang in Shepard Hall. After the ship went through its shakedown, Mayport, Florida became its home‐port. Our first major assignment was to Cuba during the Cuban crisis. As we patrolled the waters of Cuba out of Guantanamo Bay, I was able to have the Cuban workers fabricate mahogany railing for the Quarter‐deck. We traded with them. They were beautiful. I still have an unfinished piece which I have been moving around, all these years. I plan to bring it with me and give to AFA at homecoming, hoping that you can use it in the Museum. We made a coffee table out of another piece, which my son still uses and I hope someday He will give it to you. I have been fortunate to have a lovely family a son and three daughters. Marge and I have 11 grandkids and

they all live close to us here in Monmouth Beach, at the Jersey shore. We travel a lot in out Motor home taking our Grand‐daughters to various field hockey camps (Duke, Jr. O's in Knoxville, etc.). Lafferty, III ’59 – We received an update from Fred. His and wife Beverly are living in Destin, Florida. They are retired and enjoying the good life. Fred retired at age 66 after 31 years with Cargill, Inc. in Minneapolis, MN where he was Vice‐President of Global Security. Fred says his is now busy with kids, grandsons (2) and golf! Phil duQuesnay ’62 – Phil sent us and online update. He is living in Sarasota, FL. Here’s what he had to say, “Can't seem to get into the retirement race! Enjoy working at several differing types of jobs, mostly in small business accounting/

consulting. My lovely wife of 39 years enjoys working her plant business with her sister, so it will be a while before we will have lots of spare time. I do enjoy chasing the dimpled white ball through palmetto bushes and sand traps in an attempt to find the hole in the green. Wish they would make it just a wee bit larger! Fortunately, living in Sarasota, we are close enough to get to visit AFA a few times a year. it really is a nice feeling to be able to walk across the grass and the grinder without having to salute the faculty! I have recently been in touch with an old classmate, Jim O'Keefe. He lives in Helen, GA and is doing well. He regrets that he is not able to travel due to COPD, and also regrets leaving AFA before his final year. Big mistake! If you would like to contact him, give me a shout. Bob took us to task for an incorrectly identifying his picture and email address with an update from his brother Charles William Amos ’67. I sincerely apologize for our error.) Bob says, “I received the current (September) edition of Reveille and noted that somehow my photo (and apparently, my email address) have

been attached to my brother's name and graduation date ‐ Charles William Amos, Class of '67. I am not sure he will appreciate the error as he thinks he is much better looking than I, and really does have more of his hair. Since graduating from AFA in '65, I attended WVU for one year, enlisted in the US Army in July of '66 and returned to civilian life in the spring of '69, after completing a one year tour in Viet‐Nam. I returned to WVU in the fall of '69, graduating in '72 with a major in Political Science and a minor in History. I started law school at West Virginia University in the fall of '72 and earned my JD and admitted to the Bar in June of '75. I married along the way and my first born, Jason appeared in 1973. My daughter, Jessica, was born in 1976. I first worked for the State of WV Tax Dept. then as a Prosecuting Attorney. In 1981 I jumped to the corporate world and spent five year managing a land department with an oil and gas exploration and development company in the Appalachian Basin. When the bloom faded from that particular rose in 1986, I started my own practice in Fairmont, WV and continued practicing law until 2002 when I was finally successful in extricating myself from my last few cases and could retire. The process of retiring actually took two years and started in 2000 when my wife, Juliet, and I first moved to Cordova, TN. For a period of time we maintained residences in both WV and TN, but it became increasingly difficult to do so and we finally decided that we had seen enough snow to last a

lifetime. My children, Jason and Jessica are grown and out of the house. Jason lives and works in NYC and, Jessica lives and works in L.A., CA. I am semi‐retired, working on a part‐time basis doing real estate closings. I read a lot, enjoy wood‐working and generally act as my wife's go‐fer. I hope the above info helps fill in some blanks, and God willing and the creek don't rise, you can separate me from my brother. I

Theodore Glanton ’67 – We received a very nice update from Ted. He said, “I currently work for the City of Houston’s Public Works

and Engineering Department where I am a supervising engineer responsible for support on the city’s five major WWTP. The plants I work on produce 120 tons/day of Class A and 20 tons/day Class B bio‐solids (fertilizer). The product, is marketed under the brand name Houactinite to the surrounding farmers & golf courses. The oxygen plant where I work produces 160 tons/day utilizing a cryogenic process and the oxygen, is used in the treatment

process. The five POTWs are permitted to treat a combined wastewater flow of 240 MGD and peak flows of about 600 MGD, which represents about 70% of the city’s capacity. I have been married for the past 22+ years and we have two children (Anna & Will). My wife has retired from Public School teaching and now works part time as an instructor in the Art Department at San Jacinto Jr. College. Daughter Anna is a junior studying animation at Savannah School of Art and Design in Georgia (she wants to make movies) and son Will is in the seventh grade attending Clear Creek’s gifted and talented school (he qualified for regional band this year). In my spare time I coach soccer (my son’s team) and serve on the Space City Football Club’s board as a Division Director for the boys U9 & U10 age groups. John G. Leddy ‘67 ‐ John and Mary Ann are living in Colleyville, TX. John says, “I am in my 9th year teaching elementary school Ft. Worth and Arlington TX. (2007. After AFA, I attended Fairfield U. in CT. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 1971. Then I attended the University of Detroit, where I received my MBA in 1984. Finally, I finished up at Texas Wesleyan University with my M Ed in 2005. Mary Ann and I have been married since 7‐7‐75. (I chose a date I could not forget). My brother, Gregory ‘66 is International P.R. Executive in Miami, FL. One of our daughters is in Dental School, and out other is with Macy’s in NYC. I fondly remember the many smart athletic, personable guys at AFA and hope to see them at the reunion. We are planning to attend Homecoming/Reunion 2007, as are my 3 Annex roomies, Woods Staton ’67 of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dan Marquart ‘67 of Brockton New York, Paul Greaves ‘67 of Collinsville, Illinois. We had a mini‐ reunion May 2006 here at my home in Collyeville, TX, where we made like tourists down to the Ft Worth stockyards and its colorful western themed tourist attractions. Woods got

himself a sharp looking black felt covered cowboy hat at, of all places, Leddy's boots at Main Street and Stockyard Drive. Dan is VP of Paychex Inc., a payroll check processing firm. Paul is retired from Southwestern Bell as a software engineer and technical consultant. John is in his 9th year as an elementary school teacher, first in Fort Worth and now Arlington, after a quarter century in the railroad business. Woods only made it to President of McDonald's for all of Argentina and a few surrounding nations. We're working closely with him to insure that he realizes his full potential. John and Paul dug out their sizeable collection of old black and whites of our Farragut days. When we got together, it was the first reunion for all four in 39 years. We enjoyed ourselves so much we solemnly swore on an old Binnacle to gather again in 2007. I’m looking forward to seeing some old friends, and am delighted to learn from AFA Alumni Association, that several of the 1967 class live right here in the DFW area!” (Most of his classmates made it to the Reunion. Maj. Chad Schwarm ’92 – We received an email from Chad. Amazingly, he and T. J. Wright (BC ‘92) are now flying together in Iraq. Here’s what Chad has to say: “Just wanted to let you all know than Captain T.J. Wright and I are squadron mates in VMFA(AW)‐225. We are currently in Iraq flying missions’ everyday in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Actually,

T.J. and I fly together in the same jet almost daily. Our squadron, the “VIKINGS”, flies the F/A‐18D Hornet. The F/A‐18D is a two seat fighter jet. Anyways, T.J. and I plan on flying out to Farragut sometime in the spring. Yes, we will fly the jet in from Miramar, CA. We already have approval from our command. I talked with Capt “Coach” Fine about this earlier. Unfortunately we were unable to make it before the deployment. T.J. and I are doing well here in Iraq. We talk about

Farragut all the time and look forward to coming out. As we all know, it is very unique to have us flying together. For some reason T.J. tells everyone I was the mean “bully” at Farragut. I reply with the fact he was the “teachers pet”. We all know you don’t become the BN CMDR your senior year without kissing a little *&#. I will send some more pictures this week. Shannon A. Banks ’97 – We received an update from Shannon. She is living in Allentown, PA now. Here’s what Shannon sent us in her update. “Last year I separated from the Air Force after serving 8 years as an Air Traffic Controller. I just recently moved to Allentown Pennsylvania. I took a job with the Federal Aviation Administration as a controller in the TRACON (radar and

tower). I hope to make it to the 10 year reunion! I hope everyone is doing well! Well, I graduated Vanderbilt University in May 2005 with a BS in Psychology with honors and commissioned as an ENS in the Navy. I then headed down to Pensacola, FL to begin flight training

for the Navy. I moved to Norfolk, VA in May to finish flight school to be a Naval Flight Officer in the E‐2C Hawkeye. I should finish training in July 2008 and will hopefully be going to Japan as my duty station. If anyone would like to get back in touch with me they can e‐mail me c/o [email protected]. Pollie Cooper‐Strickland ’97 – Polly sent us an online update. She said, “I got married on April 21, 2007 at Pfeiffer University Chapel. I currently work for a Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrician with Carolina's Medical Center. I work with kids with ADD, ODD, OCD, & Autism. It’s an emotional roller coaster but very fulfilling job. I graduated from Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC in 2001 with a B.S. in Sports Medicine and a B.S. in Athletic Training. I worked for the local school system as an athletic trainer for several years before working for the hospital. Our office is moving the weekend of the Homecoming, so I won't be able to attend and I am very sad about that. I have been looking forward to this for many years. Chris Turner ’01 ‐ I am an Infantry officer in the Army currently stationed in Bagdad, Iraq for a 15 month deployment, which will end Oct/Nov 2008. Here is a picture of

me and another Soldier from my platoon during a combat patrol in southern Baghdad. I live in a Combat Out Post in the neighborhood of Al Hadar in Southern Baghdad, The COP is a Christian Church that is part of the Vatican that was taken over by Al Qaeda during the war. The Army took it back over then turned it into a small military base. I will be here

until November of 2008, then I return from Iraq, back to my unit in Germany. I look forward to the day I can come back to Farragut for a reunion. Each year since graduation there has been a military obligation that has kept me from coming. Sylvio Brutus was the tenth child of immigrant parents from Belle Glade, Florida when he arrived on the Farragut campus. He credits AFA with providing the opportunity, structure, and values that have led to his personal success. Sylvio now is the athletic director and head basketball coach at Randolph Macon Academy, a college prep military school in Front Royal, Virginia. On Thursday, November 29, 2007, he shared with parents,

alumni, and friends his message: embrace opportunity, respect your family, and value education. The following day he expounded upon his message encouraging cadets to embrace the opportunities Farragut presents. Sylvio recounted his experiences as a cadet and emphasized how important AFA remains in his life. Sylvio was the first presenter as part of the AFA Compass of Success program. This program is part of the Development Office’s strategy to educate alumni, parents, and friends about the Academy’s mission, which is to provide a college preparatory environment that promotes academic excellence, leadership skills, and social development within a diverse community of young men and women. At this year’s Homecoming Reunion Dinner the Development Office held a small silent auction. This year, alumni were joined by members of the AFA Parents Association for cocktails and dinner. The auction consisted of items such as a hand‐made quilt, a beverage basket, get‐away stays at resorts, and a rare autographed picture of our own Moon Walking Astronaut, Charles Moss Duke ‘53. Here is some great news about Andrew we just re‐ceived from his Mother, Chloe Harriman. She says, “Hi Everybody: This is much happier news than I have sent on other occasions. Andrew is still awaiting the 9th surgery, scheduled for a bone graft. This (news) happened yesterday. He was one of 5 men from his unit to be awarded the Silver Star (4th highest commendation in the Army) for heroic actions while engaged in conflict. This had nothing to do with his injury. It was for his performance under pressure and the saving of a life of a fellow soldier. I learned this was happening just 24 hours before the presentation, so I jumped on a plane and was able to be there to witness the event. The presentation was done by General Caldwell (3 Star) for whom Camp Caldwell was named‐‐that was one of Andrew's bases while in Iraq. I have to tell you that Andrew was quite

the "man of the hour". So many other soldiers hugged him and shook his hand, and congratulated him and then they all (without exception) turned to me to tell me what a great job he did with his medical skills the entire time he was able to be in Iraq with them. He is now the most decorated soldier in his Unit. Oh, and they also told me, he got more packages and mail than any other guy in their Unit. Some told me they were pretty envious! So, hats off to all of you (at AFA) for making that happen. I wish you all a Happy Holiday Season...and, once again, send you so much gratitude for all of your sup‐port to our family during his deployment in Iraq, and after his injury. AFA Alumni Provides Educational Experience on Halloween Day

Mr. Steve Lieber '67, offered AFA one of his helicopters to be landed on campus Wednesday morning of Halloween at 1000. This was a grand kick‐off event for this year’s Student Homecoming. Ms. Carla Hunt, the pilot of the Channel 10 Helicopter, flew and landed on campus at 1000 and was here for one hour. During this time there were no emergencies that required her to depart early, or cancel her visit. Each Division had the opportunity to gather behind their respective fence lines at 0950 to ensure a safe landing. Then the cadets toured the aircraft and asked questions. Everyone at AFA is unanimous in expressing a big “Thank You” to Stephen Lieber for providing such an outstanding educational experience.

Alumni Communication of Student Activities Inaugurated

CAPT Robert Fine, AFA Headmaster, CDR Bill Monrose, Director of Alumni and Sandra Tabor, Development Director flew to Philadelphia for an alumni visit on September 10th and 11th.

Donald Schreiber ’46 picked us up at the airport. We were travelling to visit with several alumni and stay as guests of Edward B. DeSeta ’67 and Wanda DeSeta at their nationally known Bed and Breakfast facility, Whitewing Farm, owned and operated by the DeSeta’s for over 10 years. Don drove us to the Whitewing Farm where we met Ed and Wanda and they joined us for a wonderful lunch at a famous Glass Blowing factory which included the Simon Pearce Restaurant. Ed graciously picked up the tab.

After lunch, we had a tour of the Pennsylvania area. Don drove by some to the oldest private schools and colleges in the country, all located in or near Philadelphia. Also, we had a “rolling visit” to the beautiful Longwood Gardens ‐ The region's, and one of the world's premier horticultural display gardens, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square PA, created by industrialist Pierre S. du Pont and offers 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows; 20 outdoor gardens; 20 indoor gardens; spectacular fountains; and performing arts events including concerts, organ and carillon recitals, musical theatre, and fireworks displays. Longwood is open every day of the year and annually attracts more than 900,000 visitors. Next we visited the Brandywine River Museum of Andrew Wyeth on US Route 1, Chadds Ford, PA. This museum exhibits American art in a 19th‐century grist mill. The Brandywine River Museum, is internationally known for its unparalleled

collection of works by three generations of Wyeths, and its fine collection of American illustrations of still life, and landscape painting.

Christian Wagner ‘82 joined us later that evening at the “Farm Restaurant”, also hosted by Ed and Wanda. The specialty of the house is Maryland Crab Cakes. Everyone took Ed’s recommendation and ordered the specialty. It was the best advice ever given, as the Maryland Crab Cakes were absolutely the best any of us had ever eaten. They were 99% Crab and only 1% cake. After dinner we returned to the White Wing Farm and enjoyed a wonderful night’s sleep. In the morning, the DeSeta’s invited us to look over the beautiful furniture they proposed to give to AFA. They no longer had a need for it after they close down the Bed and Breakfast. CAPT Fine said he would arrange for us to send some academy personnel to load the furniture in a truck and drive it down to the school.

The following morning, after breakfast at a local restaurant, Don Schreiber ’46 continued his tour. At noon, he took us to lunch at the Union League of Philadelphia. It was coincidental that while we were there, they were celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the U.S. Air Force. We ate a piece of cake in honor of the anniversary and then toured the Union League. where we visited the Farragut Room. Following lunch it was off to the airport for the trip home.

Did You Know? …Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills & Nash was sent to AFA in the sixth grade? The following is quoted from Crosby, Stills and Nash: The Authorized Biography. Text by Dave Zimmer and photography by Henry Dilz: “…the Stills family moved from Louisiana to Central Florida…At this point Stephen admits, “I was acting like a goon and my mother wanted to turn me into a gentleman.” So Stephen enrolled in Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Peters‐burg. “For the purpose it was designed for, it was great.” Stephen says, “My Dad always thought I hated it, but I loved it. It just took a while, military school is quite an experience, what can I tell you? It taught me honor, developed my charac‐ter, and helped me to become a trouper.”

Congratulations Grace! Third grader, Grace Marchant, is the youngest cadet to receive her QBH (Qualified Boat Handler). CAPT McClelland said she passed her written tests with “flying colors” and did an outstanding job on her sailing demonstration. “She has set the bar for all of our cadets,” said CAPT Tom McClelland, Head of Naval Science Department.

Bill: We had a total of 8 ALUMNI who were sorry we could not go out. I had them sit on the boat over a bed of black mud. They were great. They remembered the past with great fondness and were so disappointed to see the lack of water in the basin, but pleased we were soon to have it dredged. It was great to talk to AFA grads who, though not my age, felt the love for AFA I have developed over my association that goes back (17) years. My greatest reward would be to become an honorary grad of the academy...It was a great experience to share the past, present, and future with these alumni.... Historically, the football schedule is the sole determining factor in choosing a date for a Fall Homecoming celebration and this year the schedule dictates the latest date for a home game would be October 31, 2008. Couple this with the potentials of the annual hurricane season, and the fact that this is a Presidential Election Year, it is therefore prudent to schedule the 75th Anniversary Year Celebration, our Diamond Jubilee Homecoming Events for different time of year. Thus, the Homecoming Committee has decided to change the date of the 75th Anniversary Year Celebration and Alumni Homecoming Celebration and subsequent Alumni Homecomings to the Spring. Therefore, we are planning to celebrate our 75th Anniversary 21st—25th of April, 2009. This will give all of our alumni sufficient notice to plan to come and enjoy our Spring weather. There will be no football game. Instead, we will be offering several different athletic venues; baseball and softball for the enjoyment of our alumni. These are athletic venues that occur each year throughout the country, and due to the fixation on football, are seldom if ever enjoyed by visiting alumni. In addition, to add to the magnitude of the celebration we will have the honor of having AFA’s own Apollo 16 Moon Walking Astronaut, Brig. Gen. Charlie Duke, USAF (Ret) on hand for our 75th Celebration. Charlie will be with us for several days. All visiting alumni will have the benefit of being able to have their pictures taken with Charlie. This will be an outstanding event! How many people do you know who have had their pictures taken with one of the twelve men who have walked on the Moon? Still another benefit is the fact that for many of our alumni, the timing of this event merely extends their seasonal winter visits to our state by just a couple of weeks. At this time of year, many of our Alumni who live up north will appreciate our nice weather. You can travel without fear of a Hurricane. This is one of the choicest times of the year, its warm, but not too hot, and its cool, but not too cool. All of us Floridians think its just right! Try it, you’ll like it! This will be a huge factor in assuring a large attendance for this grand celebration.

This year at Homecoming, Christian T. Chiari ’92 became President of the Admiral Farragut Alumni Association for the second time. Christian served a two‐year term 2004‐05. In 2006, he was elected President –Elect, and is now serving as President for 2007‐08. Christian has been very active and is always striving to spread the news about the quality of education at AFA. Though Christian is an active businessman in the Fort Lauderdale area, he still finds time to travel and support the Academy. At present, in addition to the two jobs he holds above, he is actively pursuing election in the fall of 2008 to a seat in the Florida Legislature from District 91.

We all wish him well in this quest. It would be great to have our own representative in Tallahassee. Christian is also immensely interested in establishing a strong endowment for Admiral Farragut Academy and encourages all Alumni to weigh the values they learned at AFA that have helped them to become successful in life. He says, “The opportunity to secure AFA’s future for the next 75 years rests in our hands. By giving back to an institution that has given so much to so many will preserve the Farragut legacy and continue the mission. What better time to get on‐board than our upcoming Anniversary Celebration? The Core Values of Integrity, Self‐Discipline, Perseverance, and Wellness & Fitness are responsible for the huge success our school has enjoyed in its Seventy‐five Years in existence. Success breeds success, and it is now time for everyone who benefited from the outstanding caliber of education, the strong ethical and moral character, and the success in life that resulted, to step‐up with a gift.” Christian M. Wagner ’82, a graduate of the Toms River campus was elected President‐Elect.. Christian will serve as President Fall 2008 through the end of our 75th Year Anniversary. He and his lovely wife Lisa, live in Greenville, Delaware, where he is in business as a financial planner. His company is Longview Financial Partners, LLC, located in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. Christian met with our visiting group this past September in Pennsylvania at the DeSeta White Wing Farm. He gives his AFA education credit for his success in life. It has been 26 years since he graduated, and he says that he feels that it is time to give back some of himself as a way of thanking Admiral Farragut Academy for the valuable academic, moral and ethical lessons that were engrained while he was a cadet. At Homecoming this year, he and his wife presented the school with a package gift that was auctioned and generated thousands of dollars for the Academy. The package consisted of round‐trip airline tickets to Philadelphia, hotel accommodations, a generous food budget, two skybox tickets to this years Army‐Navy Football Game, and limousine service from the airport to the hotel, to the football game, back to the hotel, and then back to the airport for their return trip home. We are looking forward to working with Christian and welcome his creative ideas about how we can continue building our Alumni Association , the AFA Foundation, and our Endowment to assure the Academy will be around for another seventy‐five years.

The Class of 1947, represented by graduates of the North and South showed up in numbers! Howard Sakolsky was the prime motivator and he communicated for nearly a year to build enthusiasm about gathering at their 60th anniversary reunion. The group had a special dinner at the MacDill AFB Officers Club. Everyone had a wonderful time. We’re expecting members of the Class of ‘47 to return for the 75th Anniversary of the Academy!

CLASS OF ’87 CELEBRATES IN GRAND FASHION

The class of 1987 celebrated their 20th Class Reunion is style. They began working after last year’s reunion by writing letters, email, and personal contact among one another to encourage a great turn‐out for this year’s reunion. Tadashi “Spike” Hiraoka came all the way from Japan and was recog‐nized for having come from the most distant location to this year’s reunion. They even touched bases with several of their teachers. On hand to renew their old relationships were former teachers, Larry Jensen, Andy Miller and CDR Mike Nicholson. Battalion Commander, Mike Harris was the main speaker. His talk echoed the success they had achieved since leaving Farragut for college and the professional world. This group has long considered one of the best groups in the past twenty‐five years, and it was a thrill for us to have such a large group on hand to share their experiences and to tell their tales about how they felt AFA had contributed to their successes. Here are many pictures of the fun times everyone enjoyed at this year’s celebration.

Bill Clough ‘67 sent the following open letter to CDR Frank Steele. He requested the help of someone to please pass the following to CDR Steele: Dear CDR Steele, “ The September 2007 of Reveille men‐tions CDR Frank T Steele, Comman‐dant from 1957 to 1967 stating we should “Give Honor Where Honor is Due”. Please allow me to add to that. I have wanted to say this for 40 years, but not found the oppor‐tunity. There is no reason that you should remember me. I entered AFA in ’63, graduated in ’67, but you made an impression on me that lasted life‐long. In my fresh‐man year you called me into your office. In one of the first (in a long line of) errors I made over the first two years of my AFA career, I turned in one copy of a leave chit – I should have turned in both copies. Anyway, you called me into your office and you said, “Of 300 cadets in this school, you – and only you – did this wrong.” Then, possibly in simple frustration, you asked,

“Where do you think we get offi‐cers from? Do you think we import them from other schools?! They start out just like you!” That ques‐tion: "Where do you think we get officers from?" Made a profound difference in my life! When I was in college I asked myself – “Where do they get professionals from? Do they import them from other plan‐ets? No, they’re just like you.” When I was in Seminary I asked my‐self: “Where do they get pastors from, do they import them from other churches? – no, they’re just like you.” In the Navy I asked my‐self: “Where do they get officers from? Do they import them from other countries – no, they’re just like you.” After retirement and en‐try into academe I asked myself, “Where do they get professors from? Do they import them from other schools – no, they’re just like you.” When I write articles about other people, other religions, Politi‐cians – whatever – that profound question, which led me to under‐

stand the equality of all people, al‐most daily comes back to me. It’s a centerpiece of my ministry, my teaching, my writing. I have you to thank! As you were getting ready to leave the school I made a remark – I forget the whole context, but I think there was some contest going on and you were looking for some prize that might have been on cam‐pus and I said something like “You might as well get one more thing out of the school before you go.” “In my adolescent naiveté I had no idea it might be mistaken as a smart‐ass remark. It was one of many I made. In retrospect, I re‐gretted it and never had the oppor‐tunity to offer an apology. You’ve probably forgotten long ago and, in any event, I apologize. But most of all, I wanted you to know that an off the cuff remark you made to a cadet over 40 years ago really made a huge difference in at least one person’s life.” Sincerely yours, William R. Early in the month of December we blasted off for a visit with Moon Walker, Charlie Duke and his lovely wife Dotty at their beautiful home which is nestled in the hills of New Braunfels, Texas. Our visiting team consisted of CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr., Headmaster, CDR Bill Monrose, Director of Alumni, and Ms. Sandra Tabor, Director of Development. As we arrived, we could scarcely believe our eyes for all over the front lawn of the Duke Home were wild deer. We immediately wondered if Santa Claus was here resting up for his trip around the world at the end of the month, along of course, with his reindeer. We were greeted by Charlie and Dotty as they were placing

a Christmas Wreath on their front door. Charlie was wearing a Santa Claus hat, which added to the charm of the moment. We were welcomed inside and got a tour of their beautiful home which sits high above a river ravine that flows through the area. From their back deck you could see the sun setting off on the distant horizon and what a beautiful sight it was on this still evening in Texas. Charlie and Dotty had made reservations for dinner at a nearby Native American Restaurant. We set out with Charlie and Dotty leading the way up and down the countryside. We enjoyed the Christmas lights that were glistening throughout the town. At dinner we began to discuss the upcoming 75th Anniversary of the Academy. Bob Fine asked Charlie if it would be possible for him to participate during this grand celebration. It seems, when you’ve been one of the twelve men who have walked upon our moon that your time is in demand by everyone. Bob said we were planning the 75 Homecoming for the Spring of 2009 as it marked the end of the 75 years the Academy had been in existence. Fortunately for us, it was far enough in advance for Charlie to be able to be with us for this special occasion. The 75th Anniversary Homecoming will be held in April of 2009. Charlie and Dotty will be able to be our guests for the better part of a week. Imagine just how wonderful this will be for those Alumni who will attend this grand celebration. You could have graduated from over several thousand other high school and you would not have the opportunity to meet one of the twelve men who have walked on the moon. For us at Farragut, there was a time when we could stand together with two of the men who braved the space void from the Earth to the Moon. Unfortunately, Alan Shepard is no longer with us for the 75th Anniversary Celebration. This makes having Charlie with us even more significant. It is our fervent hope that you will all plan to join us.

Because her father went to CUBA with Teddy Roosevelt in the late 1890's as Chief Clerk , US Army to General Leonard Wood , ever since I was a small child able to remember , my mother always stated that she wanted me to go to a Military School in the USA for high school ! My grandfather later became the first United States Consul to Havana and became quite widely known to the US lawmakers and business community because of his involvement and founding of the Havana Electric Railway Light and Power Company! I was un‐phased by mothers wishes until my 11th.birthday on January 16, 1936 ! Living in Havana, in those days an ages, having "talking movies" at one's home was something out of this world and a privilege of the precious few as it can be imagined! For my birthday my parents had some 10 friends of mine for lunch at our home and as a "special" gift, one talking movie!. I cannot recall exactly the name of the movie, I think it was "Shipmates Forever". Obviously it had to do with the Naval Academy! Ever since that day, I said to myself, that's where I want to go ! As the time approached for me to go the USA for military high school, in one of my fathers boating magazines, I read an advertisement of a school called "Admiral Farragut Academy" in Toms River , NJ ( now extinct), They advertised themselves as "America's First Naval Preparatory School". Unknown to my parents I wrote to the school and asked for brochures which they sent.. I told my parents I wanted to go to this Prep school because I wanted to go to "Annapolis"…. After duly checking out the school at the US Embassy, my parents finally sent me to this school where I entered in September of 1938 and graduated in June of 1942.! In the meantime the US congress passed a bill authorizing one foreign national from each Latin American country to enter the service academies, ( at that time only West Point and Annapolis), not to exceed 20 at a time in each Academy! My father requested the President of Cuba to appoint me for entry to the Naval Academy under this bill, which he did and I was appointed from Cuba. It is interesting to note that in the history of Cuba I was the SECOND appointee from Cuba. The first one was Carlos Hevia, USNA class of 1920, who in the early '30's was President of Cuba for FOUR HOURS……(he probably broke a Guinness record for short tenure…) and in 1948 became Cuba's Secretary of State . At that time I had the privilege of being appointed his Naval aide to a State visit to Washington, D.C and environs ( including USNA) with the President of Cuba!" I remember taking my entrance exams in TRENTON, NJ together with both CT Westcott And J.R. Lindsay who were at Farragut with me and later we

all entered the Naval Academy in June of 1942 as members of the class of 1946 subsequently graduating on June 6, 1945! I have NEVER, EVER regretted this and this is why I decided to write this story after reading the comments in the April 2007 REVEILLE re: our upcoming 75thReunion. Paul de la Llama—’42

“Commander Monrose, thank you for getting back to me, and also for the kind words. I felt a lot of grief when I read about Capt. Banks and Col. Moriarty. I knew that Capt. Banks had to be getting up there in‐years, he was probably in his late 50's when I knew him. Col. Moriarty's death came as something of a shock to me. I remember him as being so youthful and full of energy. I "worked" for Col. Moriarty when I was in the tenth grade: I was a Junior School Advisor. He was a wonderful person. I used to go into his office and just talk to him sometimes. He was very approachable, and always had good, sound advice. Capt. Banks was the heart and soul of AFA when I was there. He did so much for the boys, even then I realized it. He cared about each and every one of us. No detail, however small, good or bad, escaped his notice. I used to get such a kick out of watching him bar‐b‐q out on the lawn near the parade ground. His apartment was there, and as I recall, he was quite an accomplished cook. I have a lot of great memories from those years. I had a friend who was a day school cadet. His name was John Mallory, and he only lived a few blocks from the school. We stayed in touch for a number of years when I left and came back to Maryland. I would be honored to have my little reminisces included in the alumni newsletter. I am very grateful to you for answering my email and letting me know about Capt. Banks and Col. Moriarty. They were among the finest of men one could ever know. Perhaps one day I'll get a chance to see AFA again, and I'll certainly ask for you if I do. Thanks again, Alan Simkin.”

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS LORENZO LAMAS? We haven’t heard from Lorenzo Lamas ’75 for sometime. Here’s an update on his latest career opportunities.

Lorenzo says, “Since last year, I have shifted my acting ca‐reer to the stage. It's been both daunting but highly re‐warding. After 20 plus years in front of the camera, on ei‐ther TV shows or movies, I have started to do more "live" performing. It started with a couple of charity perform‐ances at benefits and has been increasingly growing.

I appeared last fall at "Feinstein's at the Regency", got some pretty decent reviews. That led to starring on stage in the musical "The King and I" at the Ogunquit theatre in

Maine. I hadn’t been on stage since I was a sophomore at Farragut in "Billy Budd"! I followed up with "Dracula", this October in an equity production at Keane University. I am currently preparing my nightclub act, where I sing stan‐dards by famous songwriters like Ira Gershwin, Sammy Cahn and Rodgers and Hammerstein. I'll be at the Samueli Theatre in Orange County, CA, 1/17 thru 1/20.

I plan on coming to Florida for a two week engagement at "The Colony", in Palm Beach, www.thecolonypalmbeach.com. I'll be there 2/19 thru 3/1. Hope to see some of my Farragut brothers and sisters there!” Happy New Year and full speed ahead! Lorenzo!

Elsmore Beach Cooper ‘44N— We were notified by Alyson Cooper– Williams that her father had passed away. Elsmore Beach Cooper, aged 81, passed away on January 10, 2008 at his home in Lafayette CA.“Beach” Cooper, was born in Syracuse NY, the only child to Elsmore Reed Cooper and Cora Beach. He spent many summers in West Phoenix, Oswego County as a child. During the Depression years;1929 to 1933, he lived at the St. Johnland Home for Orphans in Kings Park, Long Island NY. He had many fond memories of living there before returning to live on Long Island with his parents. He attended Baldwin High School on Long Island 1941‐42, followed by the Farragut Naval Academy 1942‐44 in Pine Beach, NJ. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, at Kings Point, NY where he received Third, then Second Mate licenses. From 1946 to 1948 he sailed tramp ships carrying European Recovery Act and Marshall Plan cargoes. “Beach” travelled around the world several times over with a number of ships including Stockard Steamship Company and Moore‐McCormack Lines. In 1950 he joined American President Lines with their “Round the World Service” and received his Chief Mate license in 1955. In 1957 he and his family moved to California. In 1959 he left the Merchant Marines due to a shipboard accident; a mooring wire parted and shattered his leg. He was unable to return to sea but instead embarked on a long and respected career in real estate title and escrow. Transamerica, Stewart, Chicago, Northwestern, and Ticor title companies are a few he worked with in the San Francisco Bay area. He is survived by his four children: Alyson Cooper‐Williams of Vancouver WA , Paul Cooper of Oakland CA, Heather Watson of Martinez CA and David Cooper of Crockett CA. Grandchildren Fiona Mansoori, Russ Monsoori, Patrick and Rebecca Williams, and great‐grandsons Cole and Dalton Spillman. His loves were the ocean, ballet, opera, Big Band music, and cooking. Dad’s request was that when he died he be cremated and his ashes be scattered under the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco. Fair winds and following seas “Beach.”

COL Oliver H. Tallman II, ‘48N—COL Oliver H. Tallman II passed away on Saturday, 13 Oc‐tober 2007, after an extended bout with cancer. He was born in Asbury Park, NJ, on July 17, 1930, the son of Oliver Grandon and Carol H. Tallman. As a child, he lived in various small shore towns in NJ and in both Clermont and Orlando, FL. He graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, NJ, in 1948, and attended the US Naval Academy. He received his commission in the US Air Force in June, 1952 upon graduation in the 20th Company from the US Naval Academy. He served on active duty in the Air Force for 27 years, retiring in 1979. He married Colette Lussier at the Cathedral of the Air in Lakehurst, NJ, on July 19, 1952. Colonel and Mrs. Tallman have three living children who live in KY, SC, and FL. (Daniel died in infancy; Michelle passed away in 2001) Four grandchildren and two great‐grandchildren survive. He held a Bachelor of Science degree from the US Naval Academy, the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. Colonel Tallman is a Command Pilot with 3,900 flying hours in various types of aircraft. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, the Longevity Ribbon with six Oak Leaf Clusters, and other organizational, service and campaign ribbons. Bob has worked in various volunteer efforts with the drug and alcohol recovery commu‐nity for more than the past decade. Survivors include his wife, Marie Colette Lussier Tallman, Oak Ridge; children, Cynthia Denise Hazzard, Florence, KY, Kenneth James Tallman, Ballentine, SC., and Theresa Marie Cherniga and husband, Michael, Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren, Jacob Frazier(Viviana) of Austin, TX., Nicholas (Velinda) Tallman, Dayton, OH., Kara Cherniga, and Patrick Cherniga; two great‐grandchildren; and sister, Joan Hurley Smith, Delray Beach, Florida.

Frederick W. Eckelhofer ‘50N ‐ We received a letter from Mrs. Doris Eckelhofer today. It read: "It is with deep regret that I inform you of the death of my dear husband Frederick W. Eckelhofer. He passed away on January 20, 2007 after a six year battle of cancer (multiple myeloma). Fred was a devoted alumnus of Admiral Farragut Academy Class of 1950 N ‐‐much more than any other school (secondary or college) he attended. He was active in church and community and, sorely missed by his many friends and neighbors. May I extend to you my good wishes for a successful financial and academic year.” Sincerely, Doris Eckelhofer. We quote from the obituary notice Mrs. Eckelhofer sent us. “He was a graduate of the Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach and Rutgers University in Newark. Mr. Eckelhofer held various positions in accounting over the years, but preferred to get out on the road as a courier, first in New York for ADP, and then locally for American Express. An Army veteran, he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Frederick was very active at St. Joseph Church, Mendham, where he served as an usher. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6462, where he was a 1st Degree Knight, and was a past president and lifetime member of the Mendham Pastime Club. He will be remembered as someone who loved serving people. Survivors include, his wife, Doris Selzer, and two stepsisters, Kathy Donovan Orr of Colorado and Nancy Donovan Spaeth of California, and one cousin, Donald Eckelhofer of Virginia.

Aubrey Bryant Waddell ‘50S ‐ We received a sad note from Mary Waddell advising us that Aubrey had died on September 26, 2007 at his home in Savannah, GA. Aubrey was born in Charlotte, NC in 1931. He graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, FL and then attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Aubrey retired from Tanner of North Caroline in Rutherfordton where he was a Master Gardener, a past president of the Savannah Rose Society and a consulting Rosarian. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Aubrey is survived by his wife of forty‐nine years, Mary Cargill Waddell; a daughter Mary Townsend Rees, and two grandsons, Thomas Pinckney Townsend IV, and James Cargill Townsend; a sister Jane Waddell Luckenback.

Joseph E. Wisotzkey ‘51N – We received a note from John Wisotzkey ‘47N regarding the passing of his brother, Joseph. Joseph died February 4, 2007 in Bellingham, WA. After Farragut, Joe graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology and began his service with the US Corps of Engineers. Upon his discharge as First Lieutenant, he returned to York to work with the Maple Press Company. He retired from Maple Press as Executive Vice President. He is survived by his wife, Rosalie, two living children, Dr. Susanlee Wisotzkey, and Matthew Wisotzkey, two stepchil‐dren, Leslie Howard and Susan Hancock, two grandchildren, a brother, John U. Wisotzkey ’47 and a sister, Isabella W. Varner.

Josiah H. Blackmore, II ‘52N – We were recently notified by Dr. Neal F. Johnson ’52, Professor at Ohio State University about the death of his classmate Josiah Blackmore. Josiah passed from this life after an extended illness on September 26, 2007. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. From 1980, he served as the Dean of the Capital University Law School, after which in 1988, he became the 12th President of Capital University. He served as President until 1998, and the University named the Library in his honor. In 1998 Josiah retired to farm in Blacklick to raise alpacas and keep bees. He was a ’52 graduate of Admiral Farragut Academy, Toms River, NJ; a 1956 graduate of Miami University with a BA in government; and earned a Juris Doctorate “cum laude” from The Ohio State University College of Law in 1962. During his career he received many awards and honors, including an appointment from Ohio Governor Taft to the Ohio Ethics Commission and the Presidential Award for Lifetime Service by the Columbus Bar Association. He was author of many articles on ethics, academic and legal issues. He is a long time member of Worthington Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder and Deacon. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joyce; children, Josiah, III, Anne, Judith, and grandchildren, Alex, Emma, Josiah and Grace. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings. “Josiah was a man who was larger than life. His wisdom, leadership and charisma will be remembered by us all. He was an incredible legal mind, mentor, teacher, scholar and friend. Today, we lost one of Capital’s “greats”, but his contributions to this Law School and University will have a lasting impact,” said Dean Jack A. Guttenberg.

Kenneth H. Francis ‘77N, Ken, 48, died Saturday at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton. Born in Lawton, Okla., he had been a resident of Hornerstown prior to moving to New Egypt in 1986. Mr. Francis was a graduate of the Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, and attended East‐ern University in St. Davids, Pa. He had been an admissions representative for the Chubb Insti‐tute in New Brunswick and was the former owner of the New Egypt Recreation Oasis. Mr. Francis was very active in New Egypt and Plumsted Township having served on the Plum‐sted Township Committee for 16 years. He was the current deputy mayor and had also served on the Plumsted Township Planning Board and the Plumsted Township MUA. Mr. Francis was the Township liaison for the Fire Company and First Aid Squad. He was proud to have started the first paid coverage for the First Aid Squad in New Egypt. He was an assistant packmaster for the Cub Scouts and was a member of the Bordentown Bap‐tist Church. Mr. Francis is survived by his wife, Maureen Wooldridge Francis; his parents, Ken‐neth J. and Mildred A. Johnson Francis; his son, Jake Francis; his daughter, Katie Francis, all of New Egypt; his brother and sister‐in‐law, J. Rodney and Lydia Francis of Bordentown; his sister and brother‐in‐law, Tracey and Jack Byrne of Hornerstown; nieces and nephews, Christie and Ryan Byrne and Heather, Amanda, Victoria and Jonathan Francis; and his good friends, Dave and Linda Leutwyler of New Egypt.

Richard Edward Dieterich ‘73S ‐ of Palmyra, Virginia died on Sunday, September 16, 2007. He was 52. Richard grew up in Munster and Hammond, Indiana, the son of Alvah and Marilee McLeod Dieterich. He attended Munster High School and Admiral Farragut Academy in Tampa, Florida, and graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. He was for a number of years involved with Calumet Construction Company and was later employed by Onsite Computer, LLC in Merrillville, Indiana. Richard retired from the computer industry in 2005 and became an alpaca breeder, forming Adventure Farm Alpacas, Inc. in Palmyra, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Susan Woodward Dieterich, his sons Brent Palmer, Eric Dieterich, and William Dieterich; his daughters, Elizabeth Palmer MacKenzie, Emily Dieterich Brown, and Jennifer Dieterich; his sons‐in‐law Daniel Brown and Jason MacKenzie; his grandchildren Jada Palmer, Jonathan MacKenzie, Rachael MacKenzie, and Lilianna Brown; his cousins Dennis Fandrei and Keith Fandrei; and his former wife, Pamela Lovell Whyte. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, SC, 29409 or to the Music Ministry at First United Methodist Church, 110 East Queen Street, Hampton, VA 23669.

Capt Gilgenast Society for Young Alumni Is Launched to Provide Activities for Young Alumni

January, 2008 Dear Young Alumni, It gives me pleasure to announce that Jeffrey Ogden, AFA Class of 2000, has joined as an associate in the Alumni and Development Offices. Jeffery attended Saint Leo University after AFA, but finished his degree in Political Science with a minor in Marketing from the University of South Florida. While in college, Jeff was employed by Oakley as an assistant area representative. He also worked with a Tampa based Baseball Agent, working closely with players in contract negotiations, arbitration cases, and marketing needs. Jeff’s main interests at this time are in developing ways for young graduates to reconnect with the Academy through the alumni community. In particular, Jeff has been instrumental in the establishment of the CAPT Gilgenast Society for Young Alumni. This new group will encourage camaraderie among recent graduates through special events; provide opportunities to network professionally; and establish a program for alumni to keep up with classmates and friends. We hope to see you on March 7th!

will also be available. Please feel free to bring a guest and spread the word to fellow alums. Friday, April 11, 2008 – AFA Young Alumni Golf Outing AFA will host a Golf Event at The Claw as USF in Tampa, Florida,

(www.theclawatusf.cypgolf.com.) The cost is $45 per golfer and there will be awards and dinner following play. Please contact your classmates and get them involved.
