Reverend William Haynes 1850 -1933 William H a y n e s w a s b o m o n t h e H a y n e s P l a n t a t i o n n e a r M u r f r e e s b o r o , Tennessee. A plantation of approximately four hundred (400) acres which he later owned after it changed hands and became k n o w n a s t h e Dalton Place. He was the son of the plantation owner and a slave mother. Even though he experienced many disadvantages o f t h e s l a v e r y system as a youth, he also was the recipient of some advantages t h a t f e w slaves were able to enjoy. His father took an active interest in his upbringing and was consequently held in high esteem by his son. As a result of his f a t h e r ' s i n v o l v e m e n t i n h i s " r e a r i n g " h e r e c e i v e d an education tempered with a s t r o n g e t h i c a l u p b r i n g i n g . T h i s " u p b r i n g i n g " shaped his life and enabled him to become a lawyer, author, preacher, pastor, educator, a n d a m a n o f h i g h m o r a l c h a r a c t e r . Reverend Haynes was a pioneer minister with the church being closer to his heart than anyone or anything in his whole life. WilUam Haynes was twice married. One son "Jim" (J. C. Haynes) bom to his first wife a n d n a m e d after his f a t h e r , J i m H a y n e s , w o u l d b e c o m e a teacher and principal Nashville, Tennessee at the old Ashcraft School. This school later became known as Ford Greene School. He was the only son to become a preacher. This son also served as pastor at Sylvan Street Baptist church in 1936 where his father pastured. This first marriage also produced a daughter who died at an early age. Rev. Haynes preached her eulogy and "rescued" two young "orphaned" girls on the same day, w h o m he and his second wife raised. The second marriage to a woman he referred to as "Babe" produced eight children, but eleven children were raised by the couple. Jannie and Mattie Kate Carter, the young girls rescued by him, Jim and eight others were raised as natural brothers and sisters. Their children were William H a r r i s o n H a y n e s (Bill), Arthur Vertrease Haynes (Tot), E t t a L e e ( T e d ) , R o b e r t ( B o b ) , F r a n k , B o y d Wilson (B.W.), Theodore ( P e a k y e ) a n d Roger. P a r c e l s o f l a n d i n m r a l D a v i d s o n C o u n t y l o c a t e d o n T a y l o r ' s L a n e a n d W h i t e s C r e e k R o a d w e r e deeded to Rev. Haynes by his father. Rev. Haynes, himself, added more land in the eastem section of t h e c o u n t y as the years progressed. Parenting skills possessed by Rev. Haynes were said by his son, Arthur in his book. Scars of Segregation, to be pattemed after that of his patemal father. The "slave driver" mentality of his plantation father was evidenced in the rearing of his own children. Many of the leamed values of his youth eamed him the reputation of being a stem and strict disciplinarian. Those under his roof leamed early that he was the head of his household and leamed to respect h i m as " c h i e f o f t h e family. Sometimes this lesson was brought home in the "woodshed" located behind the house, using a buggy whip as the chosen instmment to discipline the children, particularly the boys. They l i v e d i n a t e n r o o m " b u n g a l o w " with an indoor toilet. His children were expected to attended school and get an education, but, they were also expected to hold jobs in the real world of work. As youngsters most were expected to work on the farm and as they grew older and home for the summer from college, to work at the Sunday School Publishing Board where their father worked as the Executive Secretary and Treasurer.
