ALMSGIVING

The act of giving to the poor in the

most ancient tradition of the Church,

is an expression of penance, a form

of piety, a witness of fraternal

charity and an expression of Lenten

conversion. Therefore, all Catholics

are urged to support generously the

charitable works of the Church,

including the poor and the

vulnerable through Catholic

Charities, education of seminarians

and children in Catholic schools, and

local parish social service ministries.

People are also encouraged to assist

the sick, the aged, the needy and the

imprisoned in other ways. Fasting

and abstinence together with works

of charity help

Catholics live in

solidarity with

the crucified

Christ reflected

in the image of

our brothers

and sisters who

suffer.

The community of St. Agnes

does so much in the way of giving to

others. We have a monthly

collection to help our neighbors in

need through Valley Christian

Neighbors in Need; our monthly

support of our sister parishes in Haiti

and in Uganda…and throughout the

year various charitable acts. But

what do we do personally for

another? It might be worth your

consideration during this holy

season.

May God Bless you in your

efforts during this Lenten Season.

Volunteer Your Time to Change a Child’s Life

Nobody longs for a safe and loving family more than a child in foster care. As a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteer, you are empowered by the courts to help make this dream a reality. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children. Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives. To find out more contact Andrea Rein at: CASA of Scotts Bluff County, 672-2922 www.casaofscbcounty.com or Email [email protected]

Are you interested in becoming more involved with the church? Altar Society is a perfect way to get involved and meet other parish members too! The Altar Society serves the parish community in a variety of ways. Traditionally, all women of the parish belong to this organization. This special organization is for all women of our parish, no matter age, occupation, gifts or time one has available. We encourage all women of the parish to sign up for at least one committee of Altar Society. Please provide both your email address and phone number to better organize committees. For more info, please join us for our first biannual meeting on March 10 at 6pm in the Garden room for a Mexican Fiesta!

Altar Society Committees include: -Reception Committee: This committee is responsible for planning and hosting 4

church receptions including RCIA, confirmation, first communion, and senior breakfast. Ideally this committee needs at least 20 members to adequately provide for each reception. This year we will also host the reception for Matt Nash’s ordination on June 17!

-Socials Committee: Altar Society will host just 2 yearly meetings, or “socials;” one

spring and one fall social. This committee is responsible for planning and hosting these socials. Our first social is March 10 with a Mexican Fiesta theme.

-Soup Supper Committee: Altar Society will host 3 Lenten soup suppers this year

following Stations of the Cross. This committee is responsible for organizing these suppers, including providing soup and bread to serve.

-Fall Dinner Committee: Fall Dinner is the biggest yearly event for the Altar Society.

All members of Altar Society are encouraged to help with this event, but this committee specifically is responsible for the organization of this great event.

-Funeral Committee: This committee hosts funeral dinners for families. Altar Society is a very vital part of St. Agnes. Obviously, the more members

each committee has, the less time and responsibility each individual member will need to provide. Again, all women of our parish are encouraged to sign up for at least one Altar Society committee. Thank you for your time and dedication to St. Agnes!

Operation Rice Bowl

This Lent, our Sunday grade school and Wednesday Middle School children will be joining millions of Catholics across the country by participating in CRS’ Operation Rice Bowl. We distributed Rice Bowl Packets at the formation sessions during the first week of Lent so we can join in this simple yet powerful Lenten practice. Cathol ic Rel ief Services Operation Rice Bowl invites us to pray with our families and faith communities, fast in solidarity with those who are hungry, learn about our brother and sisters around the world, and give sacrificial contribution to help those in need. The first pillar of Lent is Prayer. We pray to ask God for guidance on how to live our lives. In our prayer, we also thank him for the gifts he has given us, and we pray for those who have less than we do. During Lent, we can make an extra effort to pray each day.

Visit www.crs.org for additional recourses to use at home.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families Third Sunday of Lent Gospel: Luke 13:1-9

On the Way to Mass: Do you lever wonder where God is when you are having a bad day? Do you think he is with you? On the Way Home From Mass: Do our sins bring about negative consequences? Does that mean God is punishing us for them? Living the Word: Gather in your sacred space with slips of paper, pencils, and a calendar. Talk about the repentance Jesus desires: first, to look i n to ou r hearts to see where we fall s h o r t o f G o d ’ s

commandment to love God completely, love our neighbor, and love ourselves; and then to make a commitment to change. Each person can write privately one way they will repent during Lent. For all who are old enough, plan a date to receive the forgiveness and grace offered in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Thoughtful Moments: St. Josephine Bahkita

St. Josephine Bahkita was a young girl in Darfur, Sudan when she was captured and sold into slavery. Despite serving under cruel masters for many years, she remained sweet and kind. Eventually, the Michielis, who treated her very kindly, bought her. They introduced her to the Canossian Sisters of Charity, which she joined in 1893. She spent the rest of her time there as a cook and sacristan. She also helped to prepare young sisters for

missionary work in Africa. Holiness is simple Pope Francis says holiness is simple. “Like happiness, holiness is always tied to little gestures. These little gestures are those we learn at home, in the family; they get lost amid all the other things we do, yet they do make each day different.” “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward” (Mark 9:41).

5th Grade Class by Liz Salazar

The past month has been filled with many different activities for the fifth graders! We are excited for the upcoming Penny Carnival, but we also have much work to accomplish along the way. In Math, we have begun to work with reducing fractions to lowest terms, geometric shapes, and median, mode, and mean. All of these concepts were recently introduced but will be revisited occasionally for the remainder of the year. We have also spent some time reading different type of graphs such as bar graphs, circle graphs, and horizontal bar graphs. In Science, we are finishing up a unit on how ecosystems use energy. Our next unit will be on Natural resources and how they are used by us and why we must work to conserve them. As part of Social Studies, we are doing researching an African American and writing an essay on the individual's life and contribution to society. We have started to read new novels in Reading. One group is reading Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamilo. A second group is reading The Best Bad Luck I Have Ever Had by Kristin Levine. The third group is reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

On Friday, February 5th we celebrated with Kindergarten and First grade our 100th day of school! We were so excited that we were 100 days smarter. We celebrated by going to each room to do an activity. We did everything from making ties and crowns to creating a work of art with 100 things. We also enjoyed a 100th day of school breakfast snack. The Mardi Gras celebration and parade was on February 9th. Our theme this year was Around The World. Our float was decorated like Antarctica. The pre-k students were dressed like penguins with penguin masks. The students walked around the gym and made as much noise as they could. Good job Sophia Schmall and Andrew Peck for leading our parade as the King and Queen of Antarctica! In class, we are learning about food and fitness. We have explored the food groups, being heart healthy, fitness, and health. In math, the Pre-kers are learning that when you put two groups of something together, it is called addition! In religion we are learning that God gave us our church family. They are on their way to becoming Kindergartners!
