Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 28 January, 2018

This weekend, January 27-28, we will take up a Second Collection for the Church

in Latin America. Contributions to this collection support the training of priests,

religious, and lay leaders; the education of youth; and other pastoral projects that

bring people more fully into the life of the Catholic Church in 23 impoverished

countries in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Please use

the special envelope in your envelope packet for this collection.

This week is National Catholic Schools Week (January 28–February 3). There are

many wonderful activities planned this week for our students. Thank you to all those people who make sacrifices

to support our Catholic Schools: the families who choose to send their children to a Catholic school, as well as our

principals, teachers, staff, volunteers, benefactors, and board of trustees who dedicate their lives to educating our

young people.

During this week, the Church honors another wonderful saint and brilliant educator on Wednesday, January 31,

the feast of St. John Bosco (X1888), who founded a religious order called the Salesians, dedicated to teaching the

youth in Turin, Italy. St. John Bosco is known as the “Apostle of Youth,” and today there are over 16,000 Salesians

in the world.

Bishop Quinn will be offering Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, at Lourdes High School for all the

Catholic School students and teachers in the city of Rochester. It is fitting during Catholic Schools Week that

everyone will be united at Mass in a special way with the chief-teacher of the diocese.

First Friday, February 2, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. According to Sacred Scripture (Leviticus 12: 2-

8), Mary and Joseph had to present their firstborn Son in the temple 40 days after his birth (Luke 2: 22-40). As they

were presenting Our Lord in the temple, they met a man named Simeon who took the Child Jesus in his arms and

called him “the light of revelation to the nations.” (Luke 2: 32) Because Simeon said that Jesus was “the light,” the Feast

of the Presentation of the Lord is known as “CandleMass,” the Mass where the priest blesses all the candles that

will be burned in the sanctuary during the coming year. The 7:15 a.m. Mass on Friday will begin in the narthex

with the blessing of candles; everyone will be invited to join me for the blessing. After Mass you will be invited to

take a box of blessed candles home with you. There will also be a special sung Latin Mass (Missa Cantata) for the

Feast of the Presentation at 5:30 p.m.

Because the Presentation of the Lord by Mary and Joseph reveal their perfect life of poverty, chastity, and obedience,

February 2 is also World Day for Consecrated Life. We give thanks to Almighty God for the many religious sisters

and nuns, brothers and monks, hermits and priests, who have consecrated their lives to God through the vows of

poverty, chastity, and obedience. And we pray that more of our young people, children and grandchildren, will give

their lives in joyful and generous service to the Lord by accepting from Him their religious vocation.

First Saturday, February 3, is the Feast of Saint Blaise. Saint Blaise was a bishop and martyr in Armenia during the

300s. On one occasion, Saint Blaise was able to heal a little boy who was choking on a fish bone; for this reason,

Saint Blaise has been invoked as the patron saint for those people with diseases of the throat. I will administer the

Blessing of Throats with blessed candles after the 8:00 a.m. Latin Mass on Saturday, February 3.

This year, Ash Wednesday is February 14. According to the Roman Missal, the ashes blessed and distributed on Ash

Wednesday are made from the palm branches that were blessed on Palm Sunday of the previous year. Over the

course of the next two weeks, you can bring your blessed palms and place them in the basket provided in the

narthex; the palms will be burned for Ash Wednesday.

CHECK OUT ROCHESTER CATHOLIC SCHOOLS! You will

discover that our Catholic schools aim higher to pro-

vide students with exceptional academics and a nur-

turing and supportive environment for students to grow

and prosper. A positive and faith-centered environ-

ment enriches and enlivens the minds, hearts and souls

of children. Committed to strong values, rigorous aca-

demics, faith formation, and service to others, RCS

shares a history steeped in a tradition of excellence

that is rooted in the Catholic faith. WHY CHOOSE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS?

X Self-discipline. The emphasis on external discipline

in Catholic schools is intended to teach internal, self-

discipline. Students are expected to accept respon-

sibility for their actions, to respect others and to

make good decisions in the context of their faith

experience.

X Christ as a Model. The goal of a Catholic education

is to help children mature into Christ-like people. Stu-

dents are encouraged to recognize the presence of

Christ in themselves and others. The religious for-

mation of children begun at home is continued in

Catholic school.

X A Safe, Supportive Environment. Reverence for the

human dignity of every person comes from recog-

nizing Christ in self and others. More than “Drug-free

zones” or “Gun-free zones,” Catholic schools strive

to be “Christ-centered zones.”

X High Expectations. Catholic school teachers expect

every student to achieve. Over time, Catholic

school students come to internalize this value, en-

hancing their self-esteem.

X Committed Parents. Parents are a child’s first teach-

er. At Catholic schools, parents take an active role

in their children’s education. The school supports

families and works with them for the benefit of chil-

dren.

X A Caring Community. Parents provide hundreds of

volunteer service hours to their school and church!

When you send your child to our Catholic schools, your

family becomes members of a special community.

Like your children, your family will be enriched by the

opportunity to grow in faith!

THE KING’S AUTHORITY: SCOTT

HAHN REFLECTS ON THE FOURTH

SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Last week, Jesus announced the

kingdom of God is at hand. This

week, in mighty words and deeds,

He exercises His dominion - assert-

ing royal authority over the ruler of this world, Satan

(see John 12:31).

Notice that today’s events take place on the sabbath.

The sabbath was to be an everlasting sign - both of

God’s covenant love for His creation (see Exodus 20:8–

11; 31:12–17), and His deliverance of his covenant

people, Israel, from slavery (see Deuteronomy 6:12–

15).

On this sabbath, Jesus signals a new creation - that the

Holy One has come to purify His people and deliver

the world from evil. “With an unclean spirit” is biblical

language for a man possessed by a demon, Satan

being the prince of demons (see Mark 3:22).

The demons’ question: “What have you to do with

us?” is often used in Old Testament scenes of combat

and judgment (see Judges 11:12; 1 Kings 17:18). And

as God by His word “rebuked” the forces of chaos in

creating the world (see Psalms 104:7; Job 26:10–12),

and again rebuked the Red Sea so the Israelites could

make their exodus (see Psalms 106:9), Mark uses the

same word to describe Jesus rebuking the demons

(see Mark 4:39; Zechariah 3:2).

Jesus is the prophet foretold by Moses in today’s First

Reading (see Acts 3:22). Though He has authority over

heaven and earth (see Daniel 7:14,27; Revelation

12:10), He becomes one of our own kinsmen. He

comes to rebuke the forces of evil and chaos - not

only in the world, but in our lives. He wants to make us

holy in body and spirit, as Paul says in today’s Epistle

(see Exodus 31:12).

In this liturgy, we hear His voice and “see” His works, as

we sing in today’s Psalm. And as Moses tells us today,

we should listen to Him.
