J Share memories or express condolences below. Rev. Joseph Patrick Rice Rev. Joseph Patrick Rice was born June 14, 1940, in Newark, N.J. Fr. Joe graduated from St. Charles Barromeo High School in 1958. After graduating high school, Fr. Rice worked for WJRZ radio as head record librarian and at WNTA Channel 13 as a production assistant for the TV show, "Daywatch." After WNTA TV moved to California, Fr. Joe worked for the New Departure Hyatt, a division of General Motors, working as a processor inspector in Clark, N.J. While working at NDH on the midnight shift, Fr. Rice took a four-year evening course at Newark School of Fine & Industrial Arts. At 30 years of age, Fr. Joe entered Seton Hall University and in three years received a B.A. in communication arts, with interests in the theatre. He then entered Immaculate Conception Seminary and in three years graduated with a master's of divinity. While at the seminary as a Òrst-year theologian, Fr. Joe became director of the Darlington Dramatic Society, where he designed and directed "Hadrian VII," "Arsenic and Old Lace," and "The Fantasticks." He was also a member of the Schola. Fr. Rice was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1977. He completed two semesters of American sign language at Union County College. It was his great joy to celebrate Sunday Mass in ASL, teaching the choir to sing hymns in sign. Fr. Joe retired to St. John Vianney Residence for Retired Priests in Rutherford, N.J. Fr. Rice was predeceased by his father, Thomas; his mother, Mary Boyle, and his brother, Bernard. He leaves behind many cousins, both in Ireland and the U.S.A. Service and burial will be at the convenience and privacy of the family.
