Support for individuals and families impacted by the opioid crisis. Individuals in recovery need jobs train- ing. Families need access to behavioral and mental health support services. Communies need training in using Narcan, the opioid-reversal drug. Services to help teens and their families understand the risks of marijuana use. Research indicates 25% of high school seniors report using marijuana within the last 30 days. Regular or heavy use can have per- manent effects on developing brains, and is associ- ated with increased anxiety, depression and psy- chosis in teens. The Health Department is looking for communies that will help them build a network of resources to reduce the impact of these crises. I think all of these issues also reflect a spiritual crisis in our communies, and there might be ways we can serve here. James tells us, “If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,’ and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” (James 2:15-17) We will keep talking and praying, trusng that God can and will work pow- erfully through the giſts that God has provided to us. Grace To You is the monthly newsletter of Grace Lutheran Church of Glen Ellyn.

From the Pastor As you know, we’ve been talking about two facets of our ministry: Mission Out-reach and Ministry Partners. Mission Outreach is what we do to proclaim the Good News through acts of loving ser-vice. To keep doing that in this space, we are also seeking Ministry Partners—other

organizations who align with our sense of purpose, who can provide financial support through contributions for shared space in the building.

We’re thinking about a lot of different options—and we’re not alone in this. A recent article in Living Luther-an profiled a congregation that hosted a French Market in their sanctuary, along with other community events that brought 8,000 people every year into their build-ing. Recently I had a very intriguing conversation with the Executive Director of the DuPage County Health Department. I learned a lot about the Health Depart-ment’s current initiatives and the issues they have identified as critical needs in our area. Some general topics that we touched on: Education and Prevention around teen vaping. (20% of

middle and high school students report vaping within the last 30 days. These kids are 4 times more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes.)

Wellness programs and classes for seniors designed to help them remain safely in their homes, since there aren’t enough assisted-living and nursing facilities for everyone who might need that support.

Suicide prevention. The rate of suicide has been in-creasing steadily in the last several years, particular-ly among people between the ages of 19 and 29.

Support for individuals and families impacted by the opioid crisis. Individuals in recovery need jobs train-ing. Families need access to behavioral and mental health support services. Communities need training in using Narcan, the opioid-reversal drug. Police need support from centers staffed by people spe-cifically trained to discern the difference between a mental-health crisis and drug use, so people who need the emergency room don’t end up at the jail, and vice versa.

Services to help teens and their families understand the risks of marijuana use. Research indicates 25% of high school seniors report using marijuana within the last 30 days. Regular or heavy use can have per-manent effects on developing brains, and is associ-ated with increased anxiety, depression and psy-chosis in teens.

The Health Department is looking for communities that will help them build a network of resources to reduce the impact of these crises. I think all of these issues also reflect a spiritual crisis in our communities, and there might be ways we can serve here. James tells us, “If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,’ and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” (James 2:15-17) We will keep talking and praying, trusting that God can and will work pow-erfully through the gifts that God has provided to us.

If you have thoughts about all of this, I’d love to hear from you. Thank you so much for your ongoing prayer and support of Christ’s mission here at Grace!

CROP Hunger Walk Update

I am missing a report from one church so these figures are not exact and should grow until our final collection May 21st.

We had 81 walkers and $15,155 total funds raised so far.

Grace had 31 walkers and $3,591 funds raised both a record as long as I have been with the Crop Walk. I will update as necessary and will broadcast the final tallies probably May 22.

I don’t know how I can thank everyone that helped make this years Crop Walk a success and so much fun to be a part of the event. It's amazing to me to see our community at Grace in action.

Sincerely, Mike & Lois Pertle
