ERGONOMICSERGONOMICS
• DEFINITION
GREEK WORD “ ERGON = WORK, NOMIKOS = LAW ”
“SCIENCE OF FITTING WORKPLACE CONDITIONS AND JOB DEMANDS TO THE CAPABILITIES OF THE WORKING POPULATION“
ERGONOMICSERGONOMICS
• WHY IT IS IMPORTANT THE APPLICATION OF ERGONOMICS ?
TO PREVENT MSDs (Musculo Skeletal Disorders)
Carpel tunnel syndrome, DeQuervain’s disease, Raynaud’s syndrome, Tendinitis, Tenosynovitis, Trigger finger, Low back pain, …
ERGONOMICSERGONOMICS
• WHAT CAUSES MSDs ?
Awkward Postures (arms over head, bending)
High Hand Force (pinch or grip)
Repetitive Motions (intensity, duration)
Heavy Lifting (body twist, push/pull, height)
Moderate to High Hand-Arm Vibration
ERGONOMICSERGONOMICS
• WHICH ARE THE RISK FACTORS DRIVING MSDs ?
DURATION FREQUENCY INTENSITY
TARGETS OF ERGONOMIC CONTROL PROGRAM

• IS LAB ANIMAL FIELD AWARE OF MSDs ?

ILAR 2003 : JOSHUA KERST (AIHA) : “An Ergonomic Process for the Care and Use of Research Animals”
[...] Animal handlers must frequently bend and twist while lifting and carrying cages, transferring animals, and replenishing feed When these forces are combined with the exertion required to push and pull carts, or move and wash cages, the cumulative forces exerted per day by a handler range between 6000 kg for small animals to 8500 kg for larger animals. • AUTOMATION AND ERGONOMICS
ILAR 2003 : JOSHUA KERST (AIHA) : “An Ergonomic Process for the Care and Use of Research Animals”
PROCESS AUTOMATION. Automation, in the form of robotic cage washing and waste handling systems, has been implemented in a growing number of facilities. System components for robotic cage washing and waste handling typically includes robots, a pneumatic waste disposal and bedding dispenser system, and an indexing tunnel washer system as shown in Figure 2. Benefits of this system include decreased labor costs (minimum 50% reduction in manpower), increased capacity, decreased space requirements, and removal of workers from a high-level aeroallergen exposure and ergonomically hazardous environment. ALLERGENSALLERGENS
• DEFINITION OF LAB ANIMAL ALLERGY
Laboratory animal allergy (LAA) is a hypersensitivity response that may develop when susceptible persons are exposed to allergens produced by laboratory animals
LAA is most associated with exposure to fur, saliva, and urine of rats, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits
The most common symptoms are rhinitis, conjunctivitis, contact orticaria and bronchial asthma
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports that there are
approximately two million workers with jobs requiring constant handling of animals. One
third of these workers have allergic symptoms, and 10% have occupational
asthma caused by animal allergens.NIOSH Alert: DHHS/NIOSH
Publication no. 97-116; January 1998.
