Michael S. Hyatt is a Financial Advisor with UBS in the company’s Fort Worth, Texas office. A financial professional for over 40 years, Mike joined UBS (former-ly PaineWebber, Inc.) in 1992 from Texas Commerce Bank Fort Worth after serv-ing as President. From 1969 to 1973 he served as an infantry officer in the United States Army.

An active member of his community, Mike is a board member, executive com-mittee member and Treasurer of the Fort Worth Zoo Association. He is Vice Presi-dent of Finance and Director of Trinity Terrace, Inc., a continuing care retire-ment community located in Fort Worth. Mike is Chair Emeritus of Sister Cities International located in Washington, D.C. and serves on Oklahoma State University Foundation’s Board of Governors. He was recently appointed as Province President, Rho North Province of Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity. He is past presi-dent of Leadership Fort Worth Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, Inc., Casa Mañana Musicals, Inc. and the Texas Boys Choir as well as an advisory board member and past president of Fort Worth Sister Cities International.

Hello TCU Retirees:Over the past few years the TCU-

RA has been subtly changing and expanding its scope of influence and activities. And the future is bright as we welcome TCU retirees into our association. With that in mind, I have ask and the board has approved an AdHoc Committee for New Direc-tions to be headed by Larry Adams. You will find information from Larry

in this Newsletter. Others on the committee are Bronson Davis, Paul Hartman, Mary Lane, Don Jackson, and Emily Burgwyn. They have been tasked to look to the future and con-sider and/or make recommendations to the board for ways to make our association run smoothly in support of the Mission of TCURA.

Kenneth Ray Raessler Aug. 14, 1932 – Mar. 8, 2015

Before coming to TCU, the native of

Highspire, Pa. had taught in the public school systems of both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and when supervisor of music education for the Williamsport Area School District it achieved national prominence by receiving the first Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Exemplary Program Award. Raessler was an associate professor of music and Music Department chair at Gettysburg College, a liberal arts institution in the city of Civil War renown.

In 1989 Raessler became director of TCU’s Department of Music, which was elevated to a School during his tenure. Also in that time period, the Walsh Center for the Performing Arts was built. He served as president of the Texas Associa-tion of Music Schools and vice president of the Texas Music Educators Association. A former president of the TCU Retirees’ Association, he then served as Representa-tive-at-Large where he saw to and man-

aged the transfer of TCURA newsletters to electronic delivery, retiring from that position only this year.

Director and Professor of Music Richard C. Gipson had this to say about him, “Ken Raessler led TCU’s music unit at a critical time. He established the framework of the current School, oversaw its transition from department to profes-sional school, established it as Texas’ first All-Steinway School, and hired many of the faculty that distinguish the program today. He was a caring, gracious man to whom TCU and its School of Music owes much.”

Raessler received his bachelor’s degree from West Chester University in Pennsyl-vania, which later recognized him with its award as a distinguished alumni of the School of Music. His Master of Music Education degree was from Temple Uni-versity in Philadelphia and his doctorate was from Michigan State University.

He is the author of the book Aspiring to Excel, the curriculum titled “The School Choral Program: Philosophy, Planning, Organizing and Teaching,” and author of portions of the book, The Musicians’ Walk. Raessler was a frequent guest speaker lecturer, consultant and clinician.

Better late than never.Art Berliner passed away on January 10, 2013. I found out about it January 23 via campus email.Bummer!In our last conversation, one I have carried with me, I asked Art if he would grant me a favor. Without hesitation, he agreed then in-quired as to its nature. “Art, when it’s my turn to leave this planet, would you be kind enough to say something about me as a person?

Surely, YOU could find something of merit.” Unfortunately for me, I will not now be so honored. It is I who speak for him. Art was skilled in how to live a life. He was a natural. He helped me become a better person.I will always remember him. The breadth of the man was incredible. The depth of his spirit without limit.

TCU Retirees’ Association Board of Directors 2014-2015

MISSION STATEMENT

The Texas Christian Univer-sity Retirees’ Association ex-ists to provide opportunities for fellowship, to promote lifelong learning, to advocate for fair benefits, to recognize the accomplishments of its members, and to strengthen the relationship between the retirees and the University.

Elsewhere in the Newsletter you will see President Jean Walbridge’s article in which she discusses the formation of a committee to consider “new directions” for the Association as it reviews the past and yet looks toward the future. Jean has asked that I join five other colleagues (Emily Burgwyn, Paul Hartman, Don Jack-son, Mary Lane and Bronson Davis) to look at our current organizational structure, committees, programs and services to see if there are ways in which the Association can become even more effective in serving the interests and needs of our members and the University.

Specifically, our AdHoc Commit-tee has been charged with reviewing the structure and activities -- ByLaws,

committees, programs, etc. -- of the Association and then making recom-mendations for consideration by the Board of Directors. We’ll look at such areas as membership. For ex-ample, do we need as committee to be “minding the store” on recruiting new members and generally promoting the Association. In another area, as the officer who develops programs, does the Vice President need a group to help him or her to plan and schedule an expanding set of programs, activi-ties or events that reflect the interests of our members?

Be assured that our Committee recognizes that it is building on a good, solid organization --- thanks to previous officers and members of the Association who have made

good contributions over the years. I don’t foresee any recommendations for major changes; I do see our group making some recommendations that will help our Association become even stronger.

Now, we will appreciate any com-ments and input that you wish to make to our Committee concerning the structure, programs or activities of the Association. Please forward your suggestions to any Committee mem-ber or to me via email: l.adams@tcu.edu Our report is due to President Walbridge and the Board by May 4th. We welcome your input.
