This year’s luncheon was another success. It was organized by Russ Bailey and his hard working luncheon committee members. The Monarch did another great job serving salmon this year. We hope to see you on December 11, 2014, at the Airport Holiday Inn for the holiday luncheon.

Bowling news

This season’s bowling came to a close on May 21 and the new season starts on September 3. Be sure to join us. We do this for fun!

Warm-up is at 12:30 p.m., and bowling starts at 12:45 p.m. We bowl at 20th Century Bowl, SE 92nd Avenue and Powell Boulevard in Portland (right off I-205). Games are held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. The cost is only $7, which includes three games and your bowling ball and shoes. If you win the door prize of $5, you get the whole deal for only $2. (Sometimes there are enough players to have more than one door prize drawing.)

Both male and female retirees, their spouses, family members and significant others are welcome.

Call Al Richardson, chair, at 503‑655‑2863 (email [email protected]) or Terry Judkins, assistant chair, at 503‑518‑8600 (email [email protected]) if you have questions or need additional information.

The Franz bakery tour was the first tour of 2014 and the tour was absolutely wonderful. The plant is five whole city blocks; they work every day except for two holidays. Our tour guide took us around the processing plant where we saw pallets and pallets of dry ingredients and huge barrels of oil in the warehouse storage areas. We saw actual mixing/raising of the various doughs for making hot dog and hamburger buns. The massive ovens, the overhead track where all the buns go around and around for 20 minutes to cool off before they are checked for quality (the imperfect ones are sorted out and given to hog farms and some to dog food plants). Then to the area where the buns are inserted into the plastic bags, put on huge racks for loading into trucks (some trucks are triples). Then, the baked goods are shipped to the stores.

I remember when we were in grade school, we went to Franz Bakery and had to put on the hair nets before the tour and after the tour we were given a very small loaf of bread to take home. Fast forward now to being a senior citizen—we went through the same process—hair nets and free samples of bread. This time we were also given a cute sandwich holder box and a package of cookies.

We still need 1950s cabinets for our window display. You may donate or loan these items to us.

We are still accepting donations; you may drop them off at 1WTC Plaza, (next to Customer Service), 121 SW Salmon Street. Call the museum at 503-464-2120 to make sure we are there, or leave a message and we will get back to you. Alternatively, you may call or email one of us listed below.

Our search is still on for old Bullseyes and/or NewsLines, so if you have any lying around, please drop them by or mail them to the museum. We are missing several 1950s issues and would love to have them. (We don’t mind duplicate copies because we use them for other projects in the museum.) The museum group will be very thankful for any help you can give us.

If you no longer have a need for items that you might have purchased or been given to you by PGE that might be of interest or value to the museum, please give us a call, and we’ll gladly pick them up. We’ll also take your old retirement books, slides, awards, etc. Cash donations are also accepted since we do need to purchase items for the museum.

Remember, all donations are tax deductible.

8HRCS-1311-06-14 Rev. 7/9/14

It’s been a busy year, the good news first: on May 18, my granddaughter, Ashlee gave birth, to my newest great granddaughter, Lucille Elizabeth. She will be called Lucy. (Ashlee has collected “I Love Lucy” memorabilia for years.)

Now for the “not so good news”: On Saturday, May 24, I ended up in St Vincent Hospital ER having woke up with terrible pains in my stomach. With my sister just having gone through heart surgery and my older brother having heart bypass surgery in 2005, I decided I had better not take a chance. Afraid if it was my heart I shouldn’t be driving and no one else available, I had to ask my husband. With his memory problems I was reluctant to do so. Last August after he got lost for three hours trying to drive to his oldest daughter’s in Beaverton, the doctor restricted his driving to around town and over to his youngest daughter’s in Burlingame. He lived in that area from 1960 when his family arrived from Holland until we bought our home in Wilsonville in 1994.

After going through several tests, they told me I had the heart of a much younger person but wanted to keep me overnight for additional tests. They decided my problem was acid reflux, which hadn’t bothered me for years.

After arriving in my room the attending nurse asked if anyone was with me. I told her my husband had been but that he had gone home and I hoped that he made it okay.

Sunday morning he called and told me he had been in an accident on the way home and totaled his pickup. He wasn’t sure what had happened. Later I found out that he had missed the exit to I-5 from 217 and went straight ahead and ran a red light. The other car hit him in the gas tank. Fortnately, he was driving an older pickup or it could have been worse.

His bad luck didn’t stop with the accident, on Tuesday, June 3, his youngest daughter had come

down to go walking with him. At the end of their walk, he used the rest room in the park and left his wallet in it. By the time he realized he didn’t have his wallet and I drove him back to the park, it was long gone. If you have ever had your wallet or purse lost or stolen, you know it’s an all day job running around getting new bank cards etc. At the DMV, we got him a new ID.

The one good thing that came out of all of this is that he will no longer be driving. Our doctor and the rest of his family and friends have been worried for quite awhile that he might end up hurting or killing himself or someone else. And truthfully I think he realized it was “time” to hang up the keys. Growing up my Father use to say: “Bad things happen in three’s.” So, we are hoping this is it, at least for a little while.

Thanks to some of you who wrote to tell me that after shopping around, you were able to find pharmacies that would give you a Shingles shot at no charge. Some of you told me you had paid the fee charged, not wanting to have to go through the pain of Shingles.

I want to extend a personal invitation to all of the new retirees to come and join us. We are a busy group and as you can see from our list of trips planned. Dad use to tell me, “Sis stay busy and you’ll stay young”. It worked for him and his family living alone until their deaths in their 90s.

If you would like your story told or know of someone’s story you would like to see in the bulletin, please contact me at 503‑682‑8858 (home), 503‑730‑7903 (cell) or [email protected] or write to 9250 SW 4th Street, Wilsonville, Oregon 97070. All of these stories are kept on file at the museum.

God bless all of you.

- Barb Bergmans, Editor and Vice President

Do not call listIf you haven’t signed up for the National Do Not Call List, do it soon. You may register up to three phone numbers by going online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222. Numbers placed on the registry are permanent thanks to the Do Not Call Improvement Act of 2007, which became law in February 2008. Once you register your phone number, telemarketers covered by the National Do Not Call Registry have up to 31 days from the date you register to stop calling you, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Fit FactoryFor only $20 per month, PGE retirees are welcome to use the health club facilities located in Three World Trade Center. As a member, you are welcome to use the weight machines, treadmills, shower facilities or participate in any of the offered classes. To join or get answers to your questions, contact Wendi Arant at 503-464-8075.
