Chapter 1- Why Thailand?
Thailand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world that offers those who retire
there a way of life that they would not be able to achieve in their own countries.
With inflation hitting countries such as the United States, Australia and the UK, what
elderly people are finding is that a pension doesn’t go a long way. In fact, many of these
elderly people find that their lifestyles are diminished by small pensions and ever rising
costs of home ownership. It’s an uphill struggle, while in Thailand money stretches a
long way.
People who move to Thailand generally have a much healthier lifestyle, which includes
eating much more fresh food than would be consumed in the United States, and the
countryside also encourages all the year round activity, since the weather is warm and
inviting.
For between $1200 and $1500 a month, you can buy into a lifestyle you only dreamed
about, but there are compromises to be made along the way.
The political system in Thailand is very different from that in other countries, though if
you were to ask local Thai people how this affected them personally, most would say that
it doesn’t touch their lives.
The natural way of life for people in Thailand is acceptance of change and it is this that
makes the country one where solidarity of the people really does shine through.
The Thai people are brought up to a very different philosophy to westerners and once you
understand it, it’s very endearing. They love smiling and their kindness and warm
acceptance of people is based on something westerners find hard to understand. This is
called “sam nook boon koon” which is a system of generosity forgotten in many
countries today. As long as a two way relationship is formed with you, as a pensioner in
their country, you can be sure to be accepted.

It takes time, though showing this generosity of self endears the local people to you.
Many have made the transition and would tell you that although it may be you paying for
the meal today, none of the participants would take that generosity for granted. Within
the philosophy that Thai’s are brought up to, debts are always repaid.
This “sam nook boon koon” may mean that you ask them for favors, but it’s wise to
remember that to truly be part of Thailand society, repayment of debts is vital. What’s so
wonderful about this system of lifestyle is that the unspoken code of giving without
expectation of receiving is normal.
Thais are brought up to understand that those who have are there to help those who have
not and westerners find this a little strange at the beginning of their experience in
Thailand.
Once they understand the power of trust placed between giver and receiver, however,
westerners can and do adjust.
The countryside is spectacular and many people retire to the Chiang Mai area because
there is a spiritual awakening waiting for them.
With as many temples as there are in Chiang Mai district, it’s hard not to feel spiritually
awakened, especially as some of these are located in spectacular scenery that is awe
inspiring.
People feel closer to God and as they grow older, and this spirituality becomes a real
boost and helps you to feel a sense of wellbeing. In actual fact, it doesn’t even matter
who you consider your God to be. Thailand is a place for self discovery and one for
discovering who really is looking after your soul.
The Thailand people love to surround themselves with beauty, and this is apparent at
festivals, in the way that women dress and of course, in having the most wonderful
scenery on earth.

Instead of wondering why you would choose Thailand for your retirement, perhaps you
should be asking yourself why you wouldn’t want to be in such a beautiful place that has
mild weather almost all the year round.
Those ex pats who have made the move delight in telling their friends back home what a
good choice they have made and that speaks volumes.
Yes, of course, you will find life different, but isn’t that part of the great adventure of
life?
It’s an opportunity to spend quality time in the garden, to eat delicious Thai food and to
be able to have a lifestyle your money can’t pay for back home.
One ex pat explained that even though the life here is filled with questions, the answers
seem to come on their own.
Thailand allows you to slow down and to step away from the materialism of western
society into a much more pleasant society where a smile is worth more than the latest
surround sound system.
Yes, of course, technology can be had in Thailand but the point is that those settling
down in Thailand find a new order to their lives where the urgency of ownership of
modern gadgetry really isn’t as important as it is back in their country of birth. What’s
more important by far is the happiness factor and the people of Thailand are a very happy
and contented race of people to live with.
People from all walks of life have found that the choice of places to live in Thailand is
also diverse. City life may be the lifestyle chosen and this is a possibility with Bangkok
being the largest city offering great shopping.
For the beach lover, Phuket region offers white sandy beaches against a blue skyline
though many westerners are also opting for the Chiang Mai district as this offers a cross
section of lifestyles for those who enjoy town or country living. Spectacular scenery
comes to mind when mentioning Chiang Mai province. Thailand offers people choice.

It offers fantastic value and one may question “Why not Thailand?” instead of
questioning the logic behind a move such as this. It’s enchanting, exciting and even
though it’s a little bit bewildering at first, the increase in the amount of retirees in
Thailand speaks for itself.

SUMMARY
In the foregoing chapters, you have been given a feel of what it’s like to retire to
Thailand, the land of opportunity and smiling faces. We have walked you through the
possibilities and have shown you the benefits of seeking the ideal location. We have
talked about the cost of living and how to make your money stretch further. The book has
also covered all the legalities of documentation, with a lot of background information
gleaned from experience and from ex pats living in Thailand who have found their lives
to have become enriched by the experience.
Thailand is a beautiful country. It’s people are welcoming, if a little shy at first, but once
you cross the language barriers and learn to communicate, even if most of this is with
gesture and the occasional Thai word, you will gain their respect and will see the doors to
opportunity open up. The secret to living in this or any other country is to learn to fit in,
rather than taking old values with you. Once you do, you find that what opens up is a
richness beyond your wildest imagination that you glean from good health, great eating,
wonderful weather and getting away from all the aches and pains cold weather inflicts on
seniors. Many feel young again. Many feel reckless and able to tackle each day with the
same enthusiasm that was experienced during their youth. It’s a whole new experience
and unless the whole of the experience is embraced, the senior misses out on so much.
Those generous folks in Thailand will accept you if what you seek is a better quality of
life with no worries about the cost of being old. You will be respected and admired if you
throw away the materialistic past and start to embrace a new kind of future where life is
richer and people much more open and understanding. All you have to do is arrive and
when you do, an enticing and exciting future lies in wait for you.
We realize that this is a huge topic and a very life-changing one and for this reason would
