NAZARETH HOUSE - TAMWORTH NEWSLETTER June 2019 80 - 104 Manilla Road, Tamworth, NSW 2340 Telephone +61 2 6761 8755 Love, Compassion, Patience, Respect, Justice, Hospitality The Tamworth Sisters were very happy to welcome to their community a new member, Sister Trang, so now we are five .. a great number! We are blessed indeed. The Sisters also welcome two newly appointed management folk to Nazareth Care Tamworth .. Allison as General Manager and Ali as Care Services Manager. We hope that their time at Nazareth is fulfilling for them and advantageous for us. July will see Sisters Rosalie and Teresa Clare in Tamworth to present Mission Alive 2019. This mandatory training each year supports the Sisters’ ongoing endeavour to have our Core Values and the mission front and centre of all that happens in our House. The Royal Commission into Aged Care, in which we are all caught up, will not be concerned about such but for the Sisters this is the lodestone of our ministry to the vulnerable elderly who make their home at Nazareth. The Sisters wish Nazareth Care staff and residents in all our Houses wonderful celebrations and many blessings as we acknowledge Victorie Larmenier on June 16th .. the week before or the week following. If she visited Nazareth Tamworth today would she find the same dedication to the care of the elderly that she and the early Sisters of Nazareth provided in circumstances we can hardly imagine in our day? I hope so! Sister Marie

New Aged Care Quality StandardsThe new Aged Care Quality Standards If you would like to know more about the new aged care standards, The Australian Aged Care and Quality Agency have recently released a short video explaining what the New Quality Standards will mean for the resident/consumer. General Manager’s ReportWell 2019 crept up on us and has very quickly almost reached the half way mark. It won’t be long before we will start counting down the days until Christmas. However, before we get to that stage, lets take a look at what has been happening in Nazareth House Tamworth so far in 2019.We have had the pleasure of new staff joining our leadership and management team in the last few months. This has included a new ACFI Coordinator Emma Allen, a new Quality and Training Coordinator Anthea Cooper, a new Care Service Manager Ali Kaya, and myself being new to the role of General Manager. In giving you a brief insight into my working history as a registered nurse: I commenced my working history at Nazareth House in 2015 as the Clinical Care Coordinator, and after 9 months as the Clinical Care Coordinator was appointed as the Care Service Manager. I fulfilled this role for a period of 3 years, where I have only recently worked my way up to the role of the General Manager. I have 16 years’ experience in the local public health service within our hospital systems and although I always thought I was best suited for the adrenalin pumping pace of the emergency department; I have since realised that my passion actually lies within aged care.I am extremely proud and honoured to have the responsibility of leading our team within Tamworth and hope to be able to continue to provide a supportive, stable and friendly working relationship with staff, relatives, families and the Sisters of Nazareth. In Tamworth, apart from orientating our new staff to our Tamworth team, we are also working on transitioning into the new Aged Care Quality Standards, which commence in all aged care facilities on 1st July 2019. The new aged care standards will make it easier to check that people are receiving good care, based on their individual needs. Rather than the current 4 standards which apply to age care facilities, there will now be 8 standards which all aged care facilities will need to adhere to. These are very resident driven and orientated, with each standard relating to an aspect of care that contributes to the safety, health and wellbeing of the resident.

What’s happening in ACFII have been the ACFI Coordinator since the end of January this year. I commenced this position initially in a temporary role, however this soon became a permanent position a few weeks later. I first started with Nazareth care in 2006-2009 as a career while I was completing my Nursing degree at university. In 2011, I completed my degree in Midwifery, and have since worked in medical, surgical and emergency fields.I re-joined the Nazareth Care team in January 2018 as a Registered Nurse (RN), working on the floor as a casual RN. When I am not at work, I am busy being a mum to two active little boys, Logan who is 5 and Ethan who is 2: a role that I enjoy immensely. In May of this year, I attended a 2-day workshop in Brisbane focusing on our Aged Care Funding Instrument and care planning. This education was run by Dr Drew Dwyer, who is an extremely experienced man with an obvious passion for aged care. I was also able to spend some time in another Nazareth house in May, where I have been working closely with our Wynnum ACFI Coordinator Ellie. Both of these experiences, will help in my role here in Tamworth. Over the last few months, I have been giving some of our ACFI assessments a facelift, and will continue to improve these documents, to make them as easy to understand for staff as I can. My office door is always open and I welcome anybody to come by and ask questions regarding anything ACFI related.Remember my motto, there is no such thing as a silly question.

Debbie’s TravelsHi EveryoneI’ve just returned from being away for a few weeks and thought I would share some of the exciting adventures I have recently enjoyed. Our travels consisted of myself, my husband and a few of our friends, all setting off in 4 caravans and 1 RV.

During our travels, we visited lots of interesting places. I walked on the Seacliff Bridge and visited Kiama’s blowhole. We drove down the coast, crossing

Sorrento into Geelong on the barge/ferry onto the Great Ocean Road, where we ventured onto Port Campbell. We visited the beer shed in Port Campbell, then drove up to Echuca. We were able to fit in a lap around Mount Panorama in Bathurst, with of course the caravans in tow. We continued to travel to the Bylong Valley, which is a place I have not had the

pleasure of returning to for over 30 years!During our travels, I was even able to fit in some pottery classes at Bendigo Pottery. We all had a great time away and look forward to our next adventure.Debbie Drury Adminsitrtaion Manager

Easter CelebrationsIn April our residents celebrated Easter, with a special guest appearance by our local ‘Bunnings’ Easter Bunny. Many of our residents were spotted taking a ‘selfie’ with the Easter Bunny, as well as enjoying their Easter eggs..

Did you know that one LED bulb will minimize greenhouse gas emissions by almost half a ton?

LED bulbs consume less power per unit (lumen) of light emitted, reducing the greenhouse emissions

from power plants.

LED lights also generate less heat and have a longer service life than conventional bulbs and

fluorescent lights.

Our maintenance department at Nazareth House Tamworth, are currently investigating options for

installing LED lights throughout our facility.

Property & MaintenanceThe onset of winter has seen us reset the building environment systems from cooling mode (summer) to the winter heating mode. I would expect that minor unforeseen issues in the heating systems will arise. I ask all staff and visitors to take the time to inform our maintenance department of the location of any deficiencies that you encounter. Typical issues might include, radiators that are not getting hot or not regulating properly and any radiator leaks you encounter. There are ongoing, long standing issues in the environmental control system and detailed work is being done behind the scenes to identify the deficiencies, devise solutions and organize suitable funding arrangements.
