1 Retailers purchasing fruit fly host produce from the SA Produce Market Limited. Background The South Australian Produce Market Limited (SAPML) is now within a fruit fly outbreak area, following the detection of four Mediterranean fruit flies in traps, including one in a trap at the Market. Fruit flies have been found in the area and we need to manage fruit fly host produce (see below) so that it doesn’t become infested with fruit fly. It’s important that we do all we can to keep fruit fly out of SA – it protects our export market access and prevents us having to cold treat or fumigate all fruit that moves to sensitive markets. What you need to do Buyers purchasing host fruit and fruiting vegetables from within the Market site need to: Seal produce in fly-proof packaging within 1-hour of purchase; and Keep produce sealed and secure during transport. Fly proof packaging means there are no gaps > 1.6mm in the packaging. Examples include: Fly-proof bags/mesh; Cardboard boxes sealed with tape (no holes); Plastic bags (tied or sealed). Buyers are NOT permitted to return stock into the Market Site. During this outbreak, you are NOT permitted to leave your forklift; bins; pallets; produce; etc. within the Market square after 11.00am. Overnight Buyers vehicles are not to house produce and all curtains are to be pulled back. As from 17 May 2020 no overnight Buyers vehicles will be permitted in the Market. We need your help to make sure this problem does not spread. If produce is not strictly handled in this way, it will be deemed to be infested with fruit fly and cannot be sold without additional treatment (e.g. fumigation). You will need to manage the waste of your host produce. This can either be directed to: deep burial, or an approved composting facility. Reporting suspect fruit fly If you notice anything unusual in your produce, please seal it in an airtight container and immediately contact the Fruit Fly Hotline on 1300 666 010. More information A list of fruit fly host produce can be found overleaf. Visit pir.sa.gov.au/fruitfly
