Connect What You Have to What the Employer Needs The goal of a resume is to convince the employer to invite you to an interview. Through your resume, you want to demonstrate how your academic, extracurricular, and work experiences connect to the job and offer evidence that you have the potential to be a good fit for the job and organization. Research the organization and position so that you have a clear idea of what to showcase as you tailor your resume to the specific job. Read the job description carefully, and use it to identify keywords, skills, and requirements. Find the similarities between the job and your experience and qualifications. When tailoring your resume, highlight the skills specific to the job at hand, and use the keywords and verbiage you have gleaned from the job description and your research. Make connections between your knowledge, skills, and experience apparent.
Career Readiness Competencies Consider including these competencies within bullet point statements in your resume to showcase to employers that you are “Career Ready.”
4
Phrases for Accomplishments The following phrases may help enhance your skill phrases by highlighting accomplishments. The statements below may start a skill phrase or be added to the middle or end of a skill phrase. Start of skill phrase: Acted / Functioned as… Honored as… Promoted from… to… Proven track record of / in… Selected as / elected to… Served / Operated as… Specialized in... Provided valuable / invaluable… Recognized for…
Middle of skill phrase: …from inception to operational profitability… …amounted to a total savings of… …saving the company an average of… …constant interaction with… …instrumental in… …extensive / diverse practical / academic experience in… …more than _ years extensive experience in… …progressive functional responsibilities in the area(s) of… …project(s) involved…
Writing Effective Skills Phrases A skill phrase is a bulleted statement describing the skill you gained and duties performed while in a certain position. Effective skill phrases are the most important part of your resume. There are several different formats for writing them, but in general, we recommend skill phrases:
1) Begin with an action verb (see page 5 for extensive list) 2) Highlight a specific and unique skill or experience 3) Quantify the result, if possible
Examples:
Practice Your Own 1.________________________________________________________________________________________ 2.________________________________________________________________________________________ 3.________________________________________________________________________________________
Describe your responsibilities
Pair the skills you used along with what you did to communicate more information to the reader
