RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

From 1963 until 1979 I was employed by the University of Warsaw. I worked there at the Institute of Experimental Physics teaching physics students and conducting research in medium energy experimental physics. From 1963 until 1965 I studied the production of hypernuclei in the interaction of fast K-mesons. The nuclear emulsions were exposed to K- mesons at CERN and the hypernuclei were searched for under optical microscopes. From 1966 until 1969 I studied the fission of nuclei induced by high energy protons. At first we developed mica detectors for that project. Mica registers the tracks of heavy nuclei, such as fission fragments but is insensitive to light nuclei with mass number less than about 30. After chemical etching the tracks can be viewed in an optical microscope. We developed mica “sandwiches” composed of two sheets of mica with a thin target layer between them and worked out the procedure to observe spatial coincidences of fission fragments. The mica sandwiches with targets from silver to uranium were exposed to fast proton beams at Saclay and CERN and then the cross-sections of these nuclei for the high energy fission were determined. These works were the basis of my Ph.D. thesis. From 1969 until 1982 I participated in a number of experiments studying the properties of hypernuclei, first at CERN and later at BNL. Hypernuclei were formed with the use of K- mesons which convert a nucleon in the target nucleus into ( or ) particle. In the series of experiments with 6Li and 7Li targets we identified the -rays from the excited states of 4H and 4He hypernuclei. The -rays were registered in the Nal crystals and the identification was based on the detection of decay products of 4H and 4e.

- mesons were stopped in the range telescope and 0mesons were registered in Pb-scintillator sandwich. I took part in the building of the detectors and I wrote the on-line program for the experiment, the Monte Carlo simulation and the data analysis program. As excited states of 4H and 4Heare due to the spin dependent part of the n and p interactions, these works allowed for determination of the low energy N potential. In an experiment with Be targets we found a -line which was tentatively ascribed to a -transition in the 8Li hypernucleus. I also participated in an experiment at CERN in which X-rays from antiproton atoms were observed for the first time. The above experiments were the basis of my dissertation for my habilitation in 1979. In 1979 I went to BNL where I continued to work in hypernuclear physics in the Medium Energy group. Using a magnetic spectrometer we determined the level structure of 13C, 14N and 18O hypernuclei. I also worked on adding the Nal crystals to the magnetic spectrometer. We later established for the first time the transitions in 7Li and 9Be hypernuclei and interpreted them in terms of spin dependent part of N interaction. In another experiment we observed the hypernuclei 6and 16C in the (K-, +) reaction on 6 Li and 16O targets. Between 1982 and 1984 I participated in the experimental program at the Multiple Particle Spectrometer (MPS) at BNL. At first I worked on experiments E769 (Search for glueballs in - p -> KosKoson reaction) and E751 (Radiative decays of hyperons). I did the Monte Carlo simulation of these experiments and I also incorporated the monitoring of the lead glass hodoscope to the MPS on line program. Next I worked on the development of a longitudinal drift chamber for dE/dX particle identification. We digitized the signals from the chamber with 100 MHz flash ADC’s so we could measure energy losses in 10 nsec intervals. We aimed to determine the ionization sampling interval for the best particle identification. Since 1984 I have been employed by the University of Notre Dame. I am working on Fermilab experiment E735 which is looking for quark-gluon plasma production at the Cintersection of pp collider. University of Notre Dame is responsible for the identification of centrally produced charged particles. I worked in all stages of the project: choice of time of flight as the identification method, Monte Carlo analysis, building and testing of prototype scintillation counters, and testing in C radiation environment. I also designed and built the fiber optics calibration system. Now the hodoscopes are being installed in the experimental area and we are getting ready for the data taking in December 1986.
