I started my research work in the field of aquatic biology for my Ph.D. degree in 1981 under the supervision of Dr. Brij Gopal. During PhD degree I worked on “studies on Production and Decomposition of Aquatic Macrophytes” My work on decomposition of emergent and submerged macrophytes was pioneer in India and my findings on the immobilization of nutrients particularly nitrogen and phosphorus during decomposition were cited in a number of International books and Journals (SCI Journals-5). I reported that carbon nitrogen ratio greater than 25 was responsible for this process and that the initial nitrogen content was very important for decomposition process.

I am working on allelopathy from last two decades. I published the first report on the allelopathy exhibited by submerged plants in 1983 (Kulshreshtha, M. and B. Gopal, 1983. Allelopathic influence of Hydrilla verticillata (L.F.) royle on the distribution of Ceratophyllum species. Aquatic Botany, 16: 207-209).

In 1992, I got on Young Scientist Project (DST) to work on “allelopathy as a tool for biocontrol of aquatic macrophytes”. I found that a terrestrial exotic plant Lantana camara L. family Verbenaceae has the maximum potential for allelopathy. It killed water hyacinth completely in its aqueous leachate (Saxena, M.K. 2000. Aqueous leachate of Lantana camara kills water hyacinth. Journal of Chemical Ecology, 26: 2435-2447).

I found that L. camara not only inhibited the aquatic free floating weeds but also inhibited the dicots in the field. It is very interesting that the same inhibited the dicots in terrestrial field but promoted significantly the monocot weeds. My student worked on the role of allelopathy in agroecosystems thereafter and reported that this plant enhanced the wheat crop in the field. Besides, Phragmited karka enhanced the rice seedlings. This is also a great finding because both are aquatic plants.

I have performed a detailed investigation on the allelopathy of L. camara. The impact of this plant on microbes (in vivo and in vitro) is in progress. Thus, this plant is very useful for the farmers on one hand it reduced a number of pests including weeds whereas on the other hand it promoted the crop.

I was awarded two International awards Charles Darwin Gold Medal -2009 and Prof. E. P. Odum Gold medal 2007 by International Society for Ecological Communications for my research work on environment.
