While at the CCC&HC I worked with Executive Director, Ruth Bogutz to determine the monies needed for upcoming proposed gallery programs. I selected, scheduled and physically installed the art exhibitions and coordinated all the related events (opening receptions, gallery talks, special events & artists’ demos during the exhibits, etc.). I handled all the paperwork and publicity (releases, printed notices, emails, C&H/Library websites, etc.) for these events, developed prospectus where needed, borrowed furnishings which appropriately enhanced each exhibit installed and visited the participating artists’ studios to select work for each of the exhibitions. I updated the CCC&HC listing of local artists & art supporters and obtained emails whenever possible to help lower the monthly C&H mailings. Once the exhibits were over, I dismantled, packed up (when necessary) and returned the gallery walls to a workable condition by spackling & painting.

My First Showings of Clay Work

In 1996, I participated in the Member's Show at Perkins Center for the Arts and The Blues Show at Merchantville Art Cooperative; Vermont Clay Studio in Montpelier accepted my work for their gallery, giving me my first experience "selling retail."

In 1997, I was asked to do two ‘Hand-built Vessels’ shows; the first at Birdsong Gallery in Moscow, Vermont, the second at Gloucester County College in Sewell, New Jersey and was also juried into "Luminous Lamps & Lanterns" and "The Super Bowl Show," both at Vermont Clay Studio, Montpelier, Vermont. Being invited to show my work in special venues was wonderful validation but the highlight of this year was my introduction to Paulus Berensohn's book, "Finding One's Way with Clay."

By 1998, I had won ‘Best of Show’ at The Center for the Arts in Marlton, New Jersey and had traded in my Interior Design client list and office for a kiln and clay studio, intent on making clay my way of life.

From 1999 through 2001, I worked as Installation Coordinator for the annual Vermont Clay Studio show and sale, "Karen Karnes and Friends" and started teaching classes and workshops in hand building clay.

On-going Workshops

BEADS in CLAY Clay Beads have always been made in abundance. They were first painted in patterns similar to those used on pots or bowls. Making beads in clay is a skill which is easy to perfect. The clay material presents a design opportunity limited only by the imagination and expertise of the maker. This class will be spent making BEADS in CLAY - all shapes and styles which will then be left raw or finished with terra sigillata. Beads from the past speak of the maker, the wearer and the society where the art of beads flourished…so, come join us as we make our own distinctive artifacts!

Creating Clay Fabrics

Colored engobes combed through or layered on the clay surface generates impressive results. But we’ll go way beyond this as we introduce rich underglazes and patterns made from our own carved roulettes & stamps to produce CLAY fabrics beyond the imagination and learn how to use these individual CLAY fabrics to foam-impress trays, slab-build vessels or simply make tiles. The possibilities are endless…

PRINT-TO-POT The Art of TRANSFER PRINTING onto Clay

There are many ways to create clay fabrics but transfer printing black & white photo-copies of word collages, drawings and photographs onto the clay surface is one of the most challenging. Our first meeting is devoted to what is needed for subsequent classes - there is outside the classroom preparation involved in order to make your images transferable to clay – but after that, the sky is the limit! Feel free to bring examples of what you would like to transfer print to our first class for discussion.

BEGINNING to HANDBUILD CLAYThis adventure in hand building starts with the making of “Clay Fabrics” from clay slabs, engobes, underglazes, stain, textures and contrasting clay inlays. We will then create incredible foam-pressed trays, vases & pinch-strip constructions from these “fabrics” as well as explore the timeless pinch pot.

Forming clay rattles is just as magical; whether they are made small enough to wear, pillow or crescent shaped, molded, glazed or adorned, they end up being forceful, artistic creations. Come join us and memorialize your own beginnings in clay by making one!

PUT A LID ON IT!The Art of Hand Building Clay BOXES & LIDDED Containers

In this advanced hand building class we will utilize templates, slabs, pinch-strip techniques and extruded clay forms to build some of the coolest keepsake boxes and canisters. Various ways of finishing our forms from wax resist

patterning, multi-glazing & terra sigillata will also be addressed.
