2 Peter 1:12-15“12 Therefore, I will always remind you about these things – even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught. 13 And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live. 14 For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,15 so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.”

Why Peter is so eager to REMIND us?

• The word “remind” occurs 5x in 2 Peter

• 2 Peter 3:1,2 shows the intention of his letters:

“This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory. I want you to remember…” (2 Peter 3:1,2)

• Moses called the Israelites to REMEMBER 16x in Deuteronomy• David called Asaph and his

fellow Levites to REMEMBER (1 Chronicles 16:12,15)

• Nehemiah called the nobles, officials, and the laborers to REMEMBER (Nehemiah 4:14)

• Hebrews 6 calls us to REMEMBER

Ecclesiastes 12:2-62 Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars... 3 Remember him before your legs... Remember him before your teeth... 4 Remember him before the door to life’s opportunities is closed and the sound of work fades… 5 Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets… Remember him before you near the grave... 6 Yes, remember your Creator…

1So that we will…

NOT forget

Peter is so eager to REMIND us

Page 10: Restore

We see this Reality in the disciples of Jesus:

In Matthew 14 – Jesus fed 5,000 men

But in Matthew 15… The disciples FORGET that!

Matthew 16:9“…Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up?”

“If you have once accepted Christianity, then some of its main [teachings must] be

deliberately held before your mind for some time every day. We have to be continually reminded of

what we believe. [No belief] will automatically remain alive in the mind.

It must be fed.”

– C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

We knew this is what Peter had in mind becausethe 2nd chapter of 2 Peter goes like this:

“But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them… Many will follow their evil teaching… And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered.” (2 Peter 2:1,2)

Page 15: Restore

We are consistently warned of:• False Messiahs (Matthew

24:24)• False Apostles (2 Corinthians

11:14,15)• False Christians (Galatians

2:4)• False Prophets (1 John 4:1)

The Old Testament prophets warned us in:(Deuteronomy 13:1-5; Isaiah 28:7; Jeremiah 6:13,14; Ezekiel 13:9,10; Micah 3:11)

8 Always rememberthat Jesus Christ… was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. 9 And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 10 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen. 11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.

14 Remind everyoneabout these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words…

(2 Timothy 2:8-14)

“30 years from now, regardless of changes in

technology, communication, and culture,

people will still have the SAME BASIC NEEDS.They will need love,

acceptance, meaning, purpose, forgiveness, dignity,

and significance. They will struggle with selfishness, fear, guilt,

resentment, worry, boredom, loneliness, and other

universal problems. They won’t go away…”

Psalm 78:2-4,62 “I will teach you… lessons from our past –3 stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. 4 We will not hide these truths; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord… 6 so [that] the next generation might know them…”

Judges 2:10-1210 “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not remember the mighty things [God has] done... 11 [They] did evil in the Lord’s sight and served the images of Baal. 12 They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors... They went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them…
