From the Principal
On Wednesday May 6th, it was my very great pleasure see Chase Duggan receive his
award for achieving the highest 2014 NAPLAN score at Cressy District High School.
Grade 3, 5, 7 and 9 students are participating in NAPLAN testing this week. Results
from this testing will help us to understand in which areas of Literacy and Numeracy we
are doing well at Cressy and in which areas we need to improve.
I would like to congratulate all of the students who participated in the Cross-Country
Carnival on Wednesday. Students, staff and helpers braved the elements and there were
some fantastic results, as you will see later in the Newsletter.
Thursday May 7th was a very big day for our school community. It was so lovely to see
all the Mums and carers who were able to come to the Mother‟s Day Breakfast. Staff
began the day very early to prepare for the breakfast and I know their efforts were
appreciated by all. Thank you to everyone who came along and to everyone who helped
organise the event.
On Thursday night Grade 10 students and parents came along to learn about some of
the options open to students beyond Year 10. Students listened to presentations from their teachers, Launceston and
Newstead Colleges and UTAS. Families were able to ask questions and there was plenty of information for them to
take away. Special thanks to Mr Claridge, Mrs Denehy, Mr Andrews and Mr Titmuss for giving their time to make the
evening happen.
Tori Harrison
A friendly reminder to community members that you may only park in the Disabled Parking area
near the Kindergarten if you or your children have a disability. This area must remain clear at all
other times.
Thank you for you cooperation.
Cross Country
Congratulations to all of our K– 6 students who braved the elements to participate in this years Cross Country. Well
done to the Sharks who were victors from the day.
End of the Day Procedures
Please be reminded that CDHS finishes at 2:50pm. All teachers then have bus duty to attend to so, if Parents are running
late then students may be left unattended. PLEASE if you are running late contact the office to let us know.
Also, If your child is not travelling home their normal way please write a note in their diaries so we are aware of the
changes and can support your child to get where they need to be. Please do not rely on them to remember.
Winter Blues
As Winter starts to set in so do the colds and tummy bugs. If your child is unwell or has had a bad night please keep
them home to rest and recuperate. You know your child the best and know if they are unwell. It is very hard for your
child to learn if they are unwell. Please contact the office on 63976281 if your child is not attending school.
Lost Property
The Primary has excess Lost Property in the cupboard outside my office. Most of it is un-named. On Thursday and
Friday next week it will be out on top of the cupboard for you and your child to go through. Please come and take what
is yours. When you buy uniform please name it, so it can be returned to it‟s rightful owner.
5/6 Sport
5/6 Sport starts this week with a round robin session at
Longford Primary School and Recreation Ground from
12pm - 2pm. Parents are more than welcome to come
and support us.

Autumn Walk
Prep/1 CO went exploring around Cressy to see and investigate all the changes that autumn has brought to our
surroundings. We had a picnic lunch at the local Cressy Park.
We discovered that
There are more evergreen trees compared to deciduous trees in Cressy
The ground was damp and softer compared to in summer time
The grass was green in every paddock
Fungi and mushrooms are starting to grow in the grass
Leaves in Autumn are mostly orange, red, purple, yellow and brown
The pavements are covered in leaves falling to the ground below deciduous trees
When we walk on old leaves that make a crunching sound
It was cold
We loved building a leaf pile and jumping in it
Thanks to our parents helpers, Amanda Goss, Simone Rowbottom and Sally Holman

Behind the Classroom Door……………..
In History, we have been studying the
ancient past. We constructed a
t imeline detai l ing eras from
pre-history to modern history. It is
our focus in History for year 7 to
student Ancient Civilisations, but we
first need to gain a perspective of
time.
Grade 7 Wilson would like to share with you a classroom page through vari-
ous lenses of the past. In English, we have looked at writing narratives in the
genre of historical fiction. We chose an image of one of the three arches you
see below, and based our story around this image, and in a certain point in
time. After planning our stories, we researched the era to enrichen our charac-
ters and storyline within a realistic setting.
Did you know these arches are all located in Tasmania? We only found out the
true stories behind them after writing our narratives. It is possible the stories
we came up with are just as interesting as the real histories. Here is the link if
you are interested in finding out a little about each doorway.

IMPORTANT BUS INFORMATION
At Cressy District High School, many of our students catch buses to and from school. It is important that the bus process is
followed correctly to avoid any potential risks including children catching the wrong bus.
Process:
The Cressy District High School Buses (Wilmores, Marlborough, Pateena, Bracknell and Leverington) are ONLY for
students who live in these areas. The school bus service is NOT to be used as a courtesy bus. Tassielink offer a service to
and from Cressy (see their website for current timetables).
Any parents who need to add their child‟s name to a bus list during the year are required to phone the bus driver for
permission (details below of buses and contacts). This is due to some of the buses being full and another bus may be
recommended by the driver. After this permission is received, please contact the school office to add your child to the bus
list.
If there is a change of plan regarding bus travel on any particular day, a note is required in your child‟s diary/communication
book. This must be shown to class teachers (and in Primary must be shown to the bus teacher also). This change will then
be shown on the bus list ready for that afternoon. Please only phone the office regarding bus changes if it is an
EMERGENCY.
If you have any questions regarding the above information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Science and Engineering Challenge 27th April 2015
On Monday 27th April a team of students, comprising of the Applied Science class and several keen others, travelled to St. Patricks
College to compete in the Science and Engineering Challenge. Students work in teams to complete challenging tasks which require
team work, concentration and determination.
Challenges are made up of full day tasks or two half day challenges. Griffin, Rebecca, Jordan, Baiden and Tenesha had the Eco-habitech
challenge where they built a structure to cope with a range of environmental pressures. Mission to Mars was completed by Michael,
Scott and Lochie‟s and involved constructing a buggy to travel the surface of Mars using a suspension system. They came second in
their event for the day. The Hover Frenzy crew of Declan, Brodie, Coen and Corey spent the day building a hover craft which had to
circumnavigate a series of challenges.
Half day activities meant that teams had 2 challenges to complete. Renae, Courtney and Brittany worked together in the morning on
the Helter Skelter, were they constructed a tower designed to carry a load during an earthquake. At lunchtime they swapped with
Kara, Sage and Jessie-Lea to complete the Stringways challenge. This involves analytical thinking to find the most efficient path.
Jemimah, Chay, Harrison and Patrick started the day building a prosthetic hand in the Grasping at Straws. At lunch they
swapped with Ellie, Mackenzie and Taylor to supply electrical power to town. This activity requires applying knowledge to
solve a problem logically. Ellie and Mackenzie placed third with their prosthetic hand.
The finale of the day is the testing of the bridges. This year‟s bridge was built by Toby, Luke and Kirra and testing saw it
carry the buggy and at least 2 weights. A great effort and an interesting design.
Students must be congratulated on their behaviour and the way they worked together. A team effort is required to com-
plete tasks and students persevered and achieved great results.
Ms Jill Bennett - Science Teacher
The Mars Mission nearly completed with Scott, Michael and Lachlan
The Hovercraft crew, Coen, Dwyer and Corey and make a start.
Courtney, Renae and Brittany construct a tower Sage, Kirra and Jessie-Lea working out the best route in Stringways.
Jemimah, Patrick, Chan and Harrison discuss their prosetic hand.
Working out how to power a city, Taylor, Ellie and Mackenzie.
A Message from Brian Watson re ANZAC Commemorative Concert
The [ ANZAC Commemorative] concert has now been televised world wide and is an absolute smash hit with congratulations be-
ing received from around the globe.
I would remind you that as far as the children‟s contribution to this magnificent event is concerned it all started at Cressy originally
with Nelson Tabe.
So much work has gone into making the concert happen it is impossible to comprehend the many many hours of effort by so many
people.
The idea for the concert started originally with myself and I obtained support for the idea from my committee.
As the grandson of an original ANZAC that was in the first wave to land on the GALLIPOLI PENINSULAR I am absolutely over the
moon with the tribute that has been paid to all those servicemen and women that we all owe so much to.
[Thank you to ] all those students and parents and teachers who gave up their time with this event.
A FANTASTIC EFFORT AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

9/10 Agricultural Studies visit Agfest
A great day was had at Agfest on Friday. Many different exhibitors were visited and I have enjoyed reading about Robotic Milking, AI
genetics, milk production, Isa Brown chooks, Belted Galloways (which apparently look „cool‟), Alpacas, John Deere and CASE
tractors, and Jersey cows to name a few.
Thank you to McKenzie Johnstone, Justine Armstrong and Jacob Quaile, who represented the school on Thursday at Agfest, helping
run the School Farms exhibit in the UTAS tent. They spoke to the public about school farms and ran an activity for primary
children to gain a stamp for their Agfest passports. I received excellent feedback about their conduct.

Cross Country - Fun Run
On Wednesday 6th of May the House Cross Country/Fun Run Event was held. Students had to battle hard throughout
the day in conditions that were more conducive to sailing rather than running. Participation despite the conditions was
unbelievably high with a large number of students participating across the Grades. Congratulations to those students in
Sharks house who won the Cross Country Shield.
Lots of thanks must be given to those staff and students who worked throughout both carnivals and to those parents
who came to support their child/ren. From this carnival students will be selected to represent the school in the
Northern Midlands and Inter-High Cross Country Carnivals.
The Northern Midlands Carnival on June 2nd and the Inter-High Cross Country Carnival is being held on 16th of June at
Windsor Park, parents and friends are encouraged to come along to support their child.
