Matching Pipe: Carbon steel in accordance with ASTM A106, ASTM A53, and ASTM A587 (See Note 2). Reference Qualification Document: Biersteker, Dietmann, Sareshwala, and Haupt, “Qualification of Non-Standard Product Form for ASME Code for pressure piping, B31Applications” Codes and Standards and Applications for Design and Analysis of Pressure Vessel and Piping Components, PVP-Vol. 210-1, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, New York, 1991. Note 1: Piping systems containing the piping assemblies listed may establish design pressures up to and including the ambient maximum design pressure given for temperature from −20 to 400 °F (−28 to 204 °C) for ASME B31.1 and B31.3 (based on allowable stresses for the matching pipe of 15 000 psi (103.4 MPa) and 20 000 psi (137.8 MPa) respectively). For temperatures above 400 °F (204 °C) the maximum design pressure given shall be multiplied by the temperature derating factor listed in Table 2. Interpolation between derating factors is permitted. Maximum design temperature rating is 650 °F (343 °C). For methodology used to develop maximum design pressures in accordance with ASME codes, see Reference Qualification Document.

Testing performed has disclosed that the toughness for the fitting material at −20 °F (−28 °C) to be comparable or better than matching pipe material. Note 2: Pipe used for pressure qualification tested was a seamless construction to ASME-SA106 Grade B, and electric resistance welded (ERW) construction to ASME SA53 Grade B. Maximum pipe hardness is Rb 90. For assemblies using ASTM A106 Grade A, A53 Grade A, or A587 matching pipe, the listed pressure-temperature ratings shall be multiplied by 0.80. procedures outlined in the Reference Qualification Document. In this testing, an assembly consisting of a Lokring coupling two equal length pipe tangents on either side of the coupling was fabricated using standard Lokring installation procedures. A uniform bending moment was applied to the fitting/pipe assembly. This moment induced a bending stress in the assembly greater than the pipe material’s yield strength of 35 000 psi (241.3 MPa), and caused the assembly to flex in plane passing through the neutral axis. In one complete flexural cycle, the fitting/pipe assembly bends an equal distance to either side of the neutral axis. The stress intensification thus determined means that the Lokring fitting/matching pipe assembly will normally survive 7000 fully reversed flexural cycles with the matching pipe nominal stress equal to the pipe material’s minimum yield strength.

While extensive fatigue testing of the fitting and matching pipe assemblies have been performed, it is cautioned that the fitting material is among the highest tensile strength materials approved for use in pressure component applications. In developing stress intensification data, one assembly endured 80 000 cycles at a nominal moment stress of 35 000 psi (241.3 MPa) without failure.

However, both B31.l and B31.3 provide notes suggesting caution when designing with materials other than those in the ASME database. Thus, until more data is available, it is recommended that the B3l.l thermal expansion and B3l.3 displacement allowable stress-ranges be conservatively based upon grade B carbon steel allowable stress values. Note 4: The pressure-temperature ratings and the stress intensification factor given are for the Lokring coupling/matching pipe joint only. Calculations and testing confirm that effective pressure-temperature ratings and the effective stress intensification factors (based on matching pipe cross-sectional properties) are enveloped by the Lokring connection/matching pipe values. This is true as well for conditions where corrosion has internally reduced the wall thickness such that pressure-temperature rating and stress intensification factor could be affected.

Matching Pipe: Carbon steel in accordance with ASTM A106 Grade B, ASTM A53 Grade B, and API 5L Grade B (See Note 2) Reference Qualification Document: Biersteker, Dietmann, Sareshwala, and Haupt, “Qualification of Non-Standard Product Form for ASME Code for pressure piping, B31Applications” Codes and Standards and Applications for Design and Analysis of Pressure Vessel and Piping Components, PVP-Vol. 210-1, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, New York, 1991. Note 1: Piping systems containing the piping assemblies listed may establish design pressures up to and including the ambient maximum design pressure given for temperature from −20 to 300 °F (−29 to 148 °C) for ASME B31.1 and B31.3 (based on allowable stresses for the matching pipe of 15 000 psi (103.4 MPa) and 20 000 psi (137.8 MPa) respectively). For temperatures above 300 °F (148 °C) the maximum design pressure given shall be multiplied by the temperature derating factor listed in Table 2. Interpolation between derating factors is permitted. Maximum design temperature rating is 650 °F (343 °C). For methodology used to develop maximum design pressures in accordance with ASME codes, see Reference Qualification Document.

Testing performed has disclosed that the toughness for the fitting material at −20 °F (−29 °C) to be comparable or better than matching pipe material (document available upon request). Note 2: Pipe used for pressure qualification tested was a seamless construction to ASME-SA106 Grade B, and electric resistance welded (ERW) construction to ASME-SA53 Grade B. Maximum pipe hardness is Rb 90. For assemblies using ASTM A106 Grade A, A53 Grade A, or A587 matching pipe, the listed pressure-temperature ratings shall be multiplied by 0.80. Prior to using Lokring microalloyed steel repair couplings on other carbon steel pipe specifications, schedules, or constructions, contact your authorized Lokring sales and service representative.

When installing on ERW pipe, the longitudinal weld seam shall be drawn smooth or sanded to remove any suck-back, flat spots, or other surface irregularities. If the required surface conditions cannot be met, the use of anaerobic sealant, such as Loctite® PST sealant (given process compatibility) is suggested.

The designer should evaluate the potential for galvanic corrosion between the carbon steel pipe and stainless steel fitting body and should limit the maximum rated temperature of the carbon steel pipe. Lokring microalloyed steel repair couplings should not be installed on galvanized pipe used for flammable or process services

Matching Pipe: Qualified matching pipe shall conform to seamless or electric resistance welded (ERW) constructions of ASTM A312. All pipes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition according to ASTM A312/A312M. Pipe shall be of high-quality, fully-annealed construction with maximum Rockwell B scale hardness of 90. Fittings may also be installed on ASTM A53 or A106 carbon steel pipe provided the dimensional and physical properties meet the requirements of qualified stainless steel pipe. The designer should evaluate the potential for galvanic corrosion between the carbon steel pipe and stainless steel fitting. The carbon steel pipe limits the temperature rating of the assembly. Do not install Lokring 316L stainless steel fittings on galvanized pipe used for flammable or process services.

Discontinuities in the longitudinal weld seam of ERW pipe can provide a leak path if not removed or sealed. Poor longitudinal welding can result in a visible depression (or suck-back). Poor weld bead removal can result in a raised portion or a flat spot at the weld. When installing Lokring fittings on ERW pipe the weld bead must be drawn or sanded smooth and not be visible to the naked eye. Note 1: Piping systems containing the piping assembles listed may establish design pressures up to and including the ambient maximum design pressure given for temperatures from −20 to 200 °F (−28 to 93 °C) for ASME B31.1 applications, and from −425 to 300 °F (−253 to 148 °C) for ASME B31.3 [based on allowable stresses for the matching pipe of 18 000 psi (1241 bar) and 20 000 psi (1378 bar) respectively]. B31.3 allows for services to −425 °F (−253 °C) when joining ASTM A312 Grades TP 304L and TP 316L (only when pipe material is solution heat treated).

Lokring 316L stainless steel pipe fittings are limited in low-temperature service to the low-temperature limit of the applicable B31 Code. In B31.3 services, Lokring 316L stainless steel pipe couplings may be used in services to −425 °F (−253 °C) when joining ASTM A-312 Grades TP 304L, TP304, TP316L, and TP 316 pipe. However, when using special fittings manufactured with welds services below −150 °F (−101 °C) will be de-rated for pressure or external loads or both. Please contact your authorized Lokring representative for more information.

For methodology used to develop maximum design pressures in accordance with ASME codes, see Reference Qualification Document. Interpolation between the de-rating factors in Table 2 is permitted. Note 2: The methodology used to establish the stress intensification factor, i, use of B31.1 thermal expansion and B31.3 displacement stress-range calculations is outlined in the Reference Qualification Document. The stress intensification thus determined means that the Lokring fitting/matching assembly will normally survive 7000 fully reversing flexural cycles with the matching pipe nominal stress equal to the pipe material’s minimum yield strength.

Note 3: The stress intensification factor, I, used for B31.1 thermal expansion and B31.3 displacement stress-range calculations has been established in accordance with test procedures outlined in the Reference Qualification Document. In this testing, an assembly consisting of a Lokring coupling two equal length pipe tangents on either side of the coupling was fabricated using standard Lokring installation procedures. A uniform bending moment was applied to the fitting/pipe assembly. This moment induced a bending stress in the assembly greater than the pipe material yield strength of 35 000 psi (2413 bar), and caused the assembly to flex in plane passing through the neutral axis.

While extensive fatigue testing of the fitting and matching pipe assemblies have been performed (documentation available upon request), it is cautioned that the fitting material is among the highest tensile strength materials approved for use in pressure component applications. In developing stress intensification data, one assembly endured 80 000 cycles at a nominal moment stress of 35 000 psi (2413 bar) without failure.
