Responding to Crisis in Northern Iraq
Tens of thousands of displaced families have fled to Kurdish-controlled regions of northern Iraq following the takeover of Mosul and other areas by jihadist militants
known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
About 1.3 million Iraqis have been forced to leave their homes this year due to violence. Of that total, an estimated 800,000-plus individuals have been displaced since June by ISIS
takeovers, including as many as 500,000 now living in Dohuk Governorate.
Many are finding temporary shelter in churches, schools, parks, and unfinished or abandoned buildings. Informal settlements in Erbil are in the process of being
transitioned to tent camps located outside of the city.
Samaritan’s Purse work is ongoing, and beneficiaries will receive food, clean water, winterisation supplies, such as blankets and kerosene heaters for 3,300 displaced
families, and other relief supplies.
HOW SAMARITAN’S PURSE IS RESPONDING
Samaritan’s Purse has distributed more than 4,900 pillows and 7,500 mattresses
2,800 baskets of food have also been distributed. Each basket is intended to supply the basic needs of a family of five for one week.
More than 200 cooking stoves (gas) have been distributed, as well as a generator, which was given to provide an ongoing power supply for 216 families.
500 cases of nappies, over 1,000 sets of baby clothes, over 1,100 items of adult clothing, and more than 4,500 pairs of shoes have been provided.
