Respiratory Vocab.

Lungs

Main organ of the respiratory system, provide the body with oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide from the blood.

Pleurae

Double layer membrane on the outside of the lung.

Pleural Cavity

Space between the two pleurae.

Respiratory Tract

Passageways through which air moves in and out of lungs.

External Respiration.

Breathing; exchanging of air between the body and the outside environment.

Internal Respiration.

Bringing of oxygen to the cells and the removal of carbon dioxide from them.

Cilia

Small hairs in nasal cavity.

Aspiration

Food gets pulled into the larynx.

Larynx

Voice box.

Trachea

Wind pipe.

Bradypnea

Slow breathing.

Tachypnea

Fast breathing.

Hypopnea

Shallow breathing.

Hyperpnea

Abnormally deep breathing.

Dyspnea

Difficult breathing.

Apnea

Inability to breathe.

Orthopnea

Difficulty in breathing, when lying down.

Cheyne-Stokes Respiration

Irregular breathing pattern; apnea followed by deep labored breathing.

Alveoli

One-celled, walled cluster of air sacs at the end of the bronchiole.

Vocabulary KEY Alveoli - One-celled, walled cluster of air sacs at the end of

the bronchiole. Apnea – Inability to breathe. Aspiration – Food gets pulled into the larynx. Bradypnea – Slow breathing. Cheyne-Stokes Respiration – Irregulary breathing pattern;

apnea followed by deep labored breathing. Cilia – Small hairs in nasal cavity. Dyspnea – Difficult breathing. External Respiration – Breathing, exchange of air between

the body and the outside envirorment. Hyperpnea – Abnormally deep breathing. Hypopnea – Shallow breathing.

Vocabulary KEY Conti. Internal Respiration – Bringing of oxygen to the cells and

the removal of carbon dioxide from them. Larynx – Voice box. Lungs – Main organ of the respiratory system; provide

the body with oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide from the blood.

Orthopnea – Difficulty in breathing when lying down. Pleurae – Double layer membrane on the outside of lung. Pleural Cavity – Space between the two pleurae. Respiratory Tract – Passageways through which air moves

in and out of lungs. Tachypnea – Fast breathing. Trachea – Wind pipe.

Word Parts KEY Nasopharynx – Nose and throat. Oropharynx – Mouth and throat. Laryngopharynx – Larynx and

throat. Bronchitis – Inflammation of

bronchiole tubes. Pharyngorrhagia – Bleeding of

the throat. Sinusitis – Inflammation of

sinus. Rhinorrhea – Abnormal

flow/discharge from the sinus. Pleuralgia – Pain in the pleura

(side of body).

Tracheorrhagia – Bleeding in the trachea.

Hemothorax – Blood in the chest.

Pneumonia – Fluid in the lungs.

Pneumorrhagia – Bleeding in the lungs.

Hyperpnea – Increased breathing.

Bronchoscopy – Visual inspection of the bronchial tube.

Dyspnea – Painful breathing.
