Respiratory System
Respiratory System
Air sac• air-filled spaces in the body
alveoli• very small air sacs; where
air breathed in goes
Respiratory System
Bronchial tubes• two tubes at the end of the
trachea, brings in air from trachea and helps clean lungs; one tube goes to right lung, one to left
diaphragm• sheet-like muscle separating
the chest from the abdominal cavity; creates suction to draw in air and expand lungs
Respiratory System
exhale• to breathe out
inhale• to breathe in
Respiratory System
larynx• voice box
lungs• two respiratory organs
Respiratory System
Nasal cavity• helps with inhaling and
exhaling of air through the nose
pharynx• throat; collects incoming air
from the nose and passes air to the trachea
Respiratory System
respiration• inhaling and exhaling air,
breathing
ribs• bones that protect and
support the chest
Respiratory System
sinuses• hollow spaces in the bones
of the head, helps regulate temperature of air breathed in
windpipe• windpipe; passage from
pharynx to lungs
About this system…
• Uses lungs to breath in (inhale) and out (exhale)
Inhaling
1. Air enters through the nasal passage2. Air travels through the throat to the trachea3. The trachea divides into two tubes called the
bronchial tubes4. The bronchial tubes lead to the lungs5. In the lungs, the bronchial tubes divide into
smaller tubes called the bronchioles6. At the ends of the bronchioles, there are air sacs7. The diaphragm is at the bottom of the chest cavity.
Exhaling
• Carbon Dioxide is a waste product• Cells need to get rid of carbon dioxide• When blood cells absorb oxygen, it lets go of
carbon dioxide.
