MitochondriaThe process of respiration
Mitochondria are
• The powerhouse of the cell
• They take in glucose and oxygen
• They give off carbon dioxide, water and energy
Respiration looks like this
• Glucose C6H12O6 + Oxygen 6 O2
=
Carbon Dioxide 6 CO2 + Water
6 H2O + Energy
Respiration can happen without oxygen!
• This process is called fermentation.
• Fermentation occurs in plants when bacteria breaks them down and produces alcohol and vinegar.
• When it happens in humans it is called lactic-acid fermentation.
