PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS
Countdown to Open Day Our Education Week Open Day will be held on Tuesday 7th August from 8.45am and all family and friends of Drummoyne are invited to join us. We would like to especially invite our grand friends to be our guests on Open Day. The program and approximate times are included in the newsletter and we look forward to welcoming you to the school.
New Playground Phase 1 of the playground upgrade along South Street was completed during the holiday break with students this week thoroughly enjoying the digging patch, sandstone boulders and mulched play areas. The takings from the upcoming P&C school fete will go towards the next phase of the playground upgrade.
Congratulations As you would know, our school enjoys the benefit of having excellent teachers across the school. From time to time, the Department of Education seeks to utilise teachers such as these across different schools to the benefit of many students. Following a state-wide merit selection process in the Department of Education, Mrs Michelle Cowen has been successful in securing a consultancy position as a Literacy Numeracy Advisor effective from Monday 30 July 2018 for the remainder of the year.
This is an excellent opportunity for Michelle to share her considerable teaching experience and expertise across many schools and I would like to congratulate Michelle and thank her for the significant contribution she has made to the life of Drummoyne PS over the years. Mrs Zena Cassar will be the new class teacher of 1C for Semester 2. Mrs Michelle McCauley and Mrs Cassar will share the role of Assistant Principal for Year 1 for the rest of the year.

Jellybeans Music Program This year in the Jellybeans music program students will participate in a new Australian popular music program with songs like ‘Eagle rock’, ‘Love is in the air’ and ‘I am Australian’. In addition, students who are talented in music will be challenged through extension parts in each piece of music. The Jellybeans music teachers are specialists in their field and are able to compact the time for students to learn the music skills required allowing the class teachers more class time to devote to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and the other key learning areas. With best wishes for Term 3, Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL
FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK
Recently students in 6W wrote a recount of their excursion to Canberra last term. They have included many detailed descriptions of the activities and places they visited including New Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon and the Mint. They had a fantastic time!
School Reporting Parent Survey Thank you to the many parents who returned the school reporting survey at the end of last term. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and the school executive team will reflect on your thoughts and see how we can implement the suggestions made which are summarised below:
Q1. Parents indicated that the language used was:
Personalised and
Referred to student achievement in educative terms.
Q2. In relation to key learning areas, comments indicated that the reports were:
Comprehensive
Clear and accurate
Even so, the 4 KLA report comments were generic and not specific to the child
Q3. Provides clear information about personal & social development and commitment to learning. Feedback indicated the reports were:
Very detailed
Excellent, covered aspects very well
However, parents would like to see clear recommendations to work on at home and ensure that the achievement ranking and comment were consistant.

SPEECH THERAPY @ DPS
The Speech Therapist at Drummoyne Public School, Federico Diaz (working for One Stop Allied Health), will now be working with students on Fridays for Terms 3 and 4. While Federico's schedule for parent-paid students is currently full,
he is still available to meet on Friday afternoons for discussions about any concerns parents may be having about their child's communication. Please feel free to email Federico at [email protected] if you wish to book a meeting.
STAGE 2 CHOIR
Every Thursday morning everyone in the stage 2 choir happily wakes up and is so excited to attend choir practice. At 8.30am we always have the best morning of the week. We have been singing lots of songs at special events including assemblies, Hot Cross Bun Festival and the Easter Hat Parade. Our amazing teachers are Miss Champion, Miss North and Ms Walsh. WE LOVE CHOIR!!
By Nicoletta, Alannah, Sienna and Edie. Ms Walsh, Miss North and I would like to welcome anyone in Stage 2 to join the choir in the 6C classroom every Thursday at 8.30am. It’s really important that all members of the choir arrive on time to ensure a smooth and efficient rehearsal. If for some reason you are unable to commit to the choir please let us know in person. LIBRARY NEWS
There are a couple of minor changes to our library timetable this term. Class teachers are advising the classes involved and all parents need to do is encourage and remind children to read their library books and then return them promptly after reading. The library will continue to be open before school for circulation activities on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays before school, and, second half lunch on Thursdays and Fridays.

The only exception (that I can foresee) to these times is in Week 3, when the Book Fair is here. Students are being encouraged to borrow extra to cover that week if necessary. It would be greatly appreciated if returns were kept to a minimum also during Book Fair.
Book Fair is Coming……really soon
The Scholastic Book Fair will arrive at our school on Monday 6 August and be open for perusing and purchasing from Tuesday 7 to Friday 10 August. Some items will be extremely popular and may be able to be ordered if we run out. Previously, most books could be re-ordered, however, pens, pencils and posters could not. If you would like your child to purchase from the Book Fair you may either give them cash or complete the payment option on a wish list or leaflet. Please remember to bring your own bags if you are intending to purchase a few items. There will be a raffle ticket given to each purchaser of a book. Prizes will be book vouchers and will be drawn at the end of the day on Tuesday and Wednesday to enable the winners to choose their prizes before the Book Fair is packed up.
Scholastic Book Club Issue #5 Brochures for Issue #5 have arrived and are displayed on the white rack outside the internal entry to the library. Closing date for the Issue #5 orders will be 15 August. INDIGENOUS LITERACY DAY
BOOK SWAP
On the Wednesday 5 September Drummoyne Public School SRC fundraising group will be holding a book swap to fundraise for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Fundraising for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation will help purchase books for Indigenous children who don’t know how to read. The book swap is a great opportunity for children in all years to swap a book of their own with a book they haven’t read before.
The book swap will be held in the hall and will last for 3 days. Your child will be aware when it is and what to do. All students are encouraged to be involved in this activity to promote reading and support the foundation. We ask that your child bring in a gold coin donation, as well as a book that they are willing to swap with another student. The aim of this is that students who bring a book to swap will end up swapping with someone in their stage and have a different book to enjoy reading.
The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, and raise much-needed funds for remote communities. This year they hope to raise $300,000 to buy 30,000 new books for remote Indigenous communities.

OFFICE NEWS
2019 Kindergarten Places Now Limited Applications are now being finalised for Kindergarten 2019. If your child turns 5 before July 31, 2019 they are eligible to start school next year. We would appreciate if our local area enrolments would submit their applications as soon as possible. This will allow us to determine if we have any out of area places available. Please let your friends and neighbours know that the process for enrolment next year is well underway.
Donation request If you have any children’s underwear or socks in good condition, that your child no longer needs, please donate them to the office to be used when children have toileting accidents or fall in puddles and need to be changed. Many thanks

Respect, Responsibility and Resilience
With the start of the Jellybeans Music Program this term, students will be meeting new teachers and experiencing new learning activities. PBL lessons will remind students about the expectation that they display school values and positive behaviours in all school settings, for all teachers and staff.
We are looking forward to seeking feedback from students about their fun new music lessons, as well as
receiving praise from Jellybeans’ teachers about our students’ positive participation.

CAMP AUSTRALIA – CHILD CARE
SUBSIDY UPDATE
On the 2nd of July 2018, the Government’s new Child
Care Package was launched – replacing the previous
Child Care Rebate (CCR) and Child Care Benefit (CCB)
with a single Child Care Subsidy (CCS).
This new subsidy is available to all families using Camp
Australia services, and may affect the amount of fee
assistance that each family will receive. Three things
will determine a family’s level of Child Care Subsidy:
Annual income will determine the percentage of subsidy a family is eligible for,
An activity test will determine how many hours of
subsidised care families can access, and
The type of child care service will determine the hourly rate cap (for OSHC this is $10.29).
Since the release of CCS, we have found an outstanding
number of parents who still have not confirmed their
enrolment. We have sent several emails, text messages
and school newsletters to make sure they understand
that if they do not confirm their enrolment on the MyGov
website they may be paying more for care than they
need to be.
With the roll out of the new CCS, Additional Child Care
Subsidy (ACCS) is replacing Special CCB.
What this means for parents and how you can help:
Parents who are eligible to receive Additional Child Care Subsidy (ACCS) under the Temporary Financial Hardship category will need to submit a claim on the Centrelink website directly.
If a child has been identified as being at risk of serious abuse or neglect, we can consider an ACCS (Child Wellbeing) claim for them. You will need to provide to your school's Key Account Manager a letter of support, which includes as much information regarding the child's circumstance, if known the details of the agency or referral body and inform the parent that we will contact them to follow up on their claim within the next week.
Should the new CCS create any hardship for parents,
we can organise a payment plan to help parents
navigate through this challenging time. They will need to
contact our Customer Care team to get this arranged.
Any parent enquiries regarding CCS should be directed
to the attached brochure for more information, or to
contact Centrelink directly. If you have any other
concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our
Customer Care team on 1300 105 343. The team are
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (except
National Public Holidays).
Thank you for your assistance

VOLUNTEERING AT SCHOOL
Dear Parent,
Drummoyne Public School welcomes volunteers to the school in many capacities, including the canteen, uniform shop and reading in your child’s class. Even the smallest commitment to help out can really make a difference to the running of school programs and creating more meaningful experiences for the children. It is also a great way to meet other parents and the wider school community. If you volunteer to help in any way at the school, the NSW Department of Education and the school require that parents or close relatives who volunteer at their child's school:
Complete an Appendix 5 – Declaration for volunteers and non child related contractors and provide the school with 100 points of ID. You can find a list of what constitutes 100 points of ID on the flip side of this note.
To complete this form, please visit the School Administration Office prior to volunteering and fill in your details and provide us with the appropriate identification. We can then add you to our register, which covers you for any volunteering roles during the entire school year.
We also ask that volunteers complete the online training Parent Helpers Induction, this can be completed online at any time at:
www.crystalliselearning.com/helpers/Drummoyne/
Username: parent Password: Drumm0yn3
This course covers the responsibilities of helpers as well as giving parent practical strategies to help support children both in the classroom and at home. At the completion of the course there is a printable certificate available to present to the school.
Thank you for your support of our school and community. Sincerely, Brian J Dill Principal

There are three key things that will determine how much subsidy you will receive:
What classifies as recognised activity?
Hours of activity
Rates of subsidy
1Your
combined family
income
2Your fees
(Hourly rate caps apply for each service type)
3Your
fortnightly activity
(Paid & unpaid work or study)
• Paid work (including annual leave and parental leave) • Self-employment • Business start-up • Doing unpaid work in the family business • Enrolled in approved study or training course • Actively seeking work • Recognised volunteering • Other activities on a case-by-case basis
In two parent families, both parents must engage in recognised activities for at least eight hours per fortnight to receive any subsidy (unless exempt).
Hours of subsidised care will be determined by the parent with the lowest hours of activity (e.g. if one parent is working 50 hours a week and the other is working 20 hours a week – it will be the lower activity that will determine how many hours of subsidised care the family is entitled to).
Don’t underestimate how much activity you do!
Time taken to travel between your child care service and your place of work, training, study, or other recognised activity is also included.
There are exemptions from the activity test requirements, including:
• 24 hours of subsidised care per fortnight will be available for children from families on a combined family income less than $66,958 pa.
• Families may be entitled to 36 hours of subsidised care per fortnight if the child attends a kindergarten or preschool program at a centre-based day care in the year before they start school (that is two years before grade one of school).
• New hourly rate cap of $10.29 per hour for Outside School Hours Care.
• In most cases, the subsidy will be paid direct to childcare providers, meaning you only pay the difference between the fee charged by your service and the amount subsidised by the government.
• 5 per cent of your weekly Child Care Subsidy entitlement will be withheld by the Government. Following reconciliation of your tax return at the end of the financial year any amount owing to you will be paid as a lump sum by the Government. If you have been paid too much Child Care Subsidy, you will have a debt to repay.
Changes to the annual subsidy cap• If your combined family income is $186,958 pa or less, there is

Jellybeans Music Program
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
As part of the Creative Arts curriculum, in term 3 all students will be participating in a sequential whole school music program by external provider Jellybeans Music (see over). The focus is on meeting the curriculum requirements by covering musical concepts through engaging students in a wide repertoire of music pieces. This year students will participate in a new Australian popular music program. Research into the benefits of music education in schools highlights that students who study music:
show improved academic scores,
are more co-operative,
have higher levels of self-confidence
are more able to express their ideas
have improved motivation and engagement, persistence and self-discipline. In addition, a longitudinal study in the United States, ‘Champions of Change’ found that students who participate in regular music programs are far less likely to be involved with drugs, crime or have behavioural problems. Please complete the permission note below and return it to the school office with the payment of $45 by 3 August 2018. Funds are available to support families who are experiencing financial difficulties. Please contact the school if we can help. Thank you for your support of this new whole school initiative.
