• 19 major mines in SA

Operating or under construction —

including Olympic Dam, Challenger, Beverley, Leigh Creek, Honeymoon

and Prominent Hill (January 2012)

• 26 advanced projects

In feasibility, assessment or approval stages (January 2012)

• 113 potential mines

Where exploration or investigations are occurring (January 2012)

• In comparison, WA has approximately 270 operational mines

Mining Boom will:

• Impact on consumer and business confidence

• Offer significant employment opportunities

• Create a base to attract skilled workers

• Create lead up work for mine establishment

• Generate demand for housing and support services

• Generate royalties/tax revenues

• Provide significant infrastructure

• Create opportunities for innovation and development

WHAT WILL THE EXPANSION

MEAN FOR REGIONAL SA?

• Localised employment in service industries or

transport/processing of minerals (e.g. Arafura Rare

Earths outside Whyalla)

• Opportunity to compete for new residents – yes it is a

competition!

• Urban development/population growth, reversing

recent trends

• Growing populations make provision of government

services more economically viable (e.g. hospitals,

schools, etc)

• Capital works (e.g. roads, ports) have the ability to

assist the development of other industries

• Mining companies are traditionally active in local

communities (e.g. Hillgrove in Kanmantoo)

• Use of emerging technologies or techniques (e.g.

modular design and construction or prefabrication)

• Eyre Peninsula is a region that will see growth due to

its natural attractions and lifestyle

• Port Lincoln as the major service centre for

Eyre Peninsula would seem a key location likely to

experience growth

Industry & Regional Opportunities (Property Industry)

• Upper Spencer Gulf – Whyalla, Port Augusta &

Port Pirie are major towns in close proximity to the

emerging mining areas

• Adelaide – livable city in close proximity to the mining

jobs

IMPACT OF EXPANSION?

• Assist local communities to develop their ‘point of

difference’

• Provide a range of housing choice (e.g. greenfield

detached, brownfield medium density or inner city

high density housing forms)

• Up skill the property industry at all levels to support

the growth

• Provide adaptable housing in target areas to prevent

accommodation stress (e.g. oil & gas areas of Qld)

State Government Role

• Preserve the key features that make Adelaide a

livable city so we can compete for skilled labor and

capital on a global scale

• Allocate sufficient resources to the implementation

of the 30 year Plan for Greater Adelaide and the

Regional Planning Strategy

• Ensure that regulatory frameworks promote

development of resources in a sustainable and

equitable manner

• Ensure that regulatory frameworks (planning and

development) allow regions to respond to changing

demands or emerging issues (e.g. use of temporary

housing to meet unanticipated demand)

• Assist regional communities that lack skills or

resources

• Coordinate provision of essential infrastructure to

major mine sites and regional communities

• Work with industry and employment groups to

appropriately train existing residents/workers in the

skills required to service the mining sector
