Consultative Organization,

NOI1IHG that the Irrbeznat Lona'l Convention on Tonnage Heaeuremerrb of Ships,

1969, will come into force on 10 July 19829

REALIZING that tom1a~es determined under the 1969 Tonnage Convention can be sufficiently different from those determined under tonnage regulations presently

in force to create dj_fficulties in connexi.on with the application of the

International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, in force,

, REC.A.LLHTG Itecormnendat.Lon 2 of the International Confe:rence on '11onnage

Heasurement, 1969, which, inter~' recognized that the transition from existing t onnage measurement systems to the new system provided in the 1969 'I'onnage Convent.Lon shoul.d cause the least possible impact on the economics of

merchant ships,

13&\}lING TIT HIND that· the International Convention for the Saf e'ty of Life at

Sea does not specifically define the groas tonnage of ships which should be measured for the purpose of a}):plication of the provisions of that Convention,

RECALLING .ALSO that it adopted by Tesolution A.389(X) an interim scheme for

tonnage measurement for certain ships, in oxdar to ovez-come possible difficulties which mig.i.11.t ar i.se with regard to the application of the safety requirements in

:torce for ceJ~·tain ships when measured in accordance with the 1969 Tonnage Convention in compard son with the national tonnage rules in effect prior to the coming into force of that Convention,

For reasons of economy, this document is printed in a limited number. Delegates are kindly asked to bring their copies to meetings and not to request additional copies.
