Afew years ago, my friend Steve Paul told me about having joined Bob Ayres’s Boonville Big Band. But in the most enthusiastic way, with such fire and excitement in his voice and, well, I can only say love about it, that it didn’t take much encouragement to spur me to call and ask if I could try out for it, too. Band leader Bob Ayres, never having heard me sing or seen

me at all, said, “OK, come and sit in and see how you like it. Sure, why not...” So, with that generosity fortifying me — though full of very much trepidation because I had not sung in years and really only had sung rock and roll before, never jazz standards — I made the trek down to Boonville the next Wednesday night. In the band room at Anderson Valley High School, I came into a room exploding with energy: horns, a full row of saxes in every size, a grand piano, a standup bass, a full drum set, a lot of joking around, laughing, trumpets running scales, trombones honking, and general hubbub from twenty or so musicians getting ready to work. And at the front of the room: Maestro Bob Ayres himself, leaning way back in his chair, insouciantly shooting the breeze with the whole room. When I got up to sing that first time, it was so terrible that I thought they would just pull out a big hook and get me out of there, but Bob let me make my squeaky way through an out-of-my-range song and somehow, amazingly, that night started me on a run singing with the Big Band — aka in Big Band Speak: I was “The Canary,” or one of them, anyway — and introduced me to large-ensemble jazz, a world of never-ending things to learn, and thrills, hilarity, frustrations, and enjoyments beyond anything I could have anticipated.

Bob’s way of teaching is so laid back, so tolerant and understated, that it doesn’t even feel like teaching. But it is, and it’s effective. His musical erudition is matched by brilliant wit, kind-hearted people skills and incredible musical virtuosity, and, as a counterbalance to all of these stellar attributes, he seems not disinclined to suffer fools ironically until they figure out how to lose their foolishness through his patient, nearly invisible mentoring.

Of the big band jazz experience, I think this quote from JazzTech.com says it all: “Nothing can match the harmonic complexity, rhythmic drive and expressive range of a big band at full cry.” Inside the structure of the charts is room for ingenious improvisation, audacity, quiet flights of freedom and big, bluesy screaming climaxes. There is nothing like it, and there is no way to get it without a conductor who knows how to hear a flat sax in the middle of the multi-piece cacaphony of a wild arrangement of “St. James Infirmary.” None of the musicians who get to have this experience around here would have it without Bob Ayres. We are pleased that Denice Breaux has explored the subject in this issue of REM. zb

On an inky Wednesday night an extra-soupy, disorienting fog hangs in the parking lot near the Mendocino High School band room. The building is obscured, but, like a musical beacon, hot brassy chords pulse out the door, sounding the way to Bob Ayres rehearsing his Boonville Big Band.

The current incarnation of the band plays about six gigs a year and includes the standard

early age. “It was a great place to grow up,” he recalls. His brother Walter, a musician in his own right who now lives in Willits, has played with several major orchestras and served part of his military duty as a White House musician. [See sidebar] A family album reveals Grandpa playing banjo and Grandma who at an advance age drove herself to the dance club.

Bob attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon for two years, then transferred to San Francisco State University to complete his undergraduate work; here he studied cello with Margaret Rowell, world-renowned teacher who has taught some of the current wave of better cellists in Mendocino. After receiving his bachelor’s degree with a major in humanities and a minor in music, he earned his master’s from American Band College in Ashland, the country’s largest summer graduate program. Then through the San Francisco Musician’s Union he worked as a ship musician on a luxury liner, subsequently traveling to eastern Asia as a merchant seaman, naturally forming a band on the ship.

Back in San Francisco, Bob worked gigs booked through the Musician’s Union, but for ten years also held a rather bureaucratic day-job with the state of California. When he responded to an ad for music director in the Mendocino schools, he was ready for a change, and in 1968 he moved to Albion on what was to become known as Fiddle Farm. Here he and his wife Dorothy, whom he had met at San Francisco State University while en route to cello class, would raise their boys Josh and Jed and settle into life on the Mendocino Coast.

Immediately Bob taught all grade levels and all the instruments, and even chorus. Upon arrival he could play some of the instruments, but “had to give myself crash courses in the rest and after twenty-eight years could play them at least at a high school level!” he recalls. Under his baton, the Mendocino High School Marching Band participated in many annual local events and won several county competitions. To practice, the band would actually march through downtown Mendocino, in uniform, several times a week, a tradition begun before his time. “Sometimes there would be a log jam at the post office,” recalls Bob, and as Mendocino became more commercial, practicing in the street became less acceptable. By the mid-1980s it had become a partisan issue, then ceased altogether.

While teaching a course in jazz history at the College of the Redwoods, Bob would keep things lively by bringing in real live musicians “like progressive bebop guys” to illustrate his lessons. When the class got to big bands, Bob realized there were none in the area, so in the early 1970s he decided to form one. The very successful Bob Ayres Big Band participated in many competitions throughout the state such as the Reno Jazz Festival, the U.C. Berkeley Jazz Festival, and the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival in which they took first place. The band continued until Bob’s retirement from the Mendocino schools in 1995, after which he was recruited by the Anderson Valley School, which for thirty-five years had had

saxophones, trombones, trumpets, guitar, piano, bass and drum, vocalists, and, of course, “the guy up there waving his arms.” Rehearsals, which alternate between Mendocino and the Anderson Valley to accommodate the musicians, can be joyous, raucous affairs, but serious work prevails. Bob counts off: “One, two! You know what to do!” Or, “One, two! Keep it light! Watch your dynamics!”

Tonight the gang has worked through such gems as “Am I Blue,” “Embraceable You,” and “Caravan,” which Bob opens with a cautionary “Not too fast!” Things are taking shape nicely.

During the well-deserved break, the happy bedlam of random instruments creates a cacophonous yet melodious background as some of the band members share their quick enthusiasm and utter admiration for their maestro. Band manager Joe Vignone joined the group after playing alto sax for only one year. “I was playing one note in ten then,” he says. “After twenty years I now can play nine out of ten notes, and, as Bob puts it, after thirty years I’ll have it!”

It’s universally agreed that Bob’s keen sense of humor and his “patience of Job” help to keep things right. “He’s amazing—an educator all the way,” says upright bassist Richard Karch. “Things in the band are not always easy. We’re mostly older people, not high schoolers. It takes a good sense of humor, and he manages not to go “Aaacchhh!”

“Or throw his baton,” adds Joe Vignone. For most of her life octogenarian Alice Cottle has played piano, trumpet, baritone, trombone

and euphonium, and, although she has “never aspired to be a world-class musician, I have continued to play and love to play with a group.” After Bob heard her playing around locally, he invited her to join the band. “I guess he thought I was good enough and liked the sound of my horn,” chuckles Alice who is starting her fifth year in the band playing her baritone.

Alice is not the only one who appreciates Bob’s straightforward direction and willingness to oversee things which can “get kind of rowdy,” according to the band’s youngest member and tenor saxophonist Mickey Kitahara, one of several current band members who is also Bob’s former student. As a Mendocino middle schooler Mickey learned his instrument from Bob in the mid-1990s and finds him to be “a great teacher and super hip. He used to bring this funk band to play at the high school,” Mickey recalls, “and once he brought them to the middle school—I thought that was so cool.” He continues, “Bob has a sharp brain and a great sense of humor, so if things in the band aren’t going smoothly, he’ll bring humor into it.”

As a boy Bob learned to play the trumpet from his father, a music teacher in the Medford, Oregon public schools, and music of all sorts has always been a part of his life. Growing up in Ashland one block from the Shakespeare Festival, he sat through all the rehearsals at an

Page 15: Residential | Commercial | Land | Businesses 630.pdf · 2011-09-29 · Ayres’s Boonville Big Band. But in the most enthusiastic way, with such fire and excitement in his voice and,

no marching band. At first he declined their invitation, saying that in retirement he just wanted “peace and quiet...But after a year I thought, ‘It’s really quiet out here on Fiddle Farm.’” He accepted the job, and started a new marching band. Once again, since his retirement, Anderson Valley School has no marching band, but Bob is there three hours a week assisting the present band director; and eleven years ago, within the Anderson Valley Community Education Program, he started the current Boonville Big Band.

The extremely knowledgeable Bob Ayres briefly explains that the historic big band music of the 1930s and forties evolved into swing then lost popularity except with older folks of the World War II era. Big bands didn’t completely disappear, however, and “now there are more than ever,” says Bob. “They went into academia where

they started playing more technical, more difficult stuff to keep themselves challenged, with no concern about dancing.” Jazz festivals today are not showcasing 1940s dance music, but rather “complex charts…they all struggle for hours to get these intricate things together. Now it’s more for listening, not for dancing, though some of it—not all—is hard to listen to,” he concludes.

Even during his teaching years Bob has always played live music, usually with small jazz or swing combos. Along the way he has collected over one hundred instruments and, except for the trumpet and cello in which he had his only formal training, has taught himself to play them all. In his far-reaching career he has played backup for Vic Damone and jammed with West Coast jazz luminaries like Kent Glenn and Virgil Gonsalves. On the walls of his studio a treasure trove of photographs and playbills chronicle events, musicians, and memories, like Bob in his “flaming youth” playing outside the Kelley House every Fourth of July for twenty years, or Bob with his buddies from the Bay Area jazz scene who loved to visit and jam at Fiddle Farm. Then there’s Bob making music with others during the Golden Gate Park heyday, or playing fiddle in the Navarro Ridge Ramblers (“another bizarre period”).

Approaching age seventy-two, Bob Ayres shows no intention of slowing up, keeping a

Real Estate Magazine September 30, 2011 Page 15 Continued from Page 10

very lively musical calendar. Although he leads a big band, he’s “a small combo guy” and currently plays trumpet and clarinet with his Dixieland band The Dixie Devils. Not only does Bob help to keep these genres alive, he also has tremendous influence on individual musicians young and old, inspiring confidence and mastery. Fort Bragg builder and swing dancer Steve Paul plays trumpet with The Dixie Devils and was in the big band for five years, but says he really learned how to play the instrument and how to read music only by being in the band under Bob’s patient tutelage. The experience changed his life. Steve also recognizes that Bob’s former students-cum-band members received from him “a way-solid musical foundation.” Amazed that Bob has kept the band together all these years, which he likens to “herding cats,” Steve is also impressed that, when he sits in for an absent musician, Bob can “transpose on the fly. If this were Japan,” he muses, “Bob would be a national treasure.”

As if this weren’t enough activity for one guy, a typical week for Bob Ayres is bursting with music “just for the love it.” Most Sundays, his long-time friend and classical pianist Amelia Ortegon travels a good distance to enjoy several magic and varied hours of music making with Bob at Fiddle Farm. [See sidebar] On Tuesdays, the local and very versatile Ed Welter, a former UCLA tuba professor with his own bag of tricks, visits the Farm and plays accordion with Bob. As Tight Squeeze, the duo emerges occasionally to play at Headlands Coffeehouse in Fort Bragg, “then go back and rehearse for another six months,” says Bob. “We’re both Johnny-come-latelies with the accordion—we do it because we love it.”

The Boonville Big Band rehearses on Wednesday nights; then on most Thursdays virtuoso clarinet player Jack Braet, with whom Bob has played in Dixieland and modern jazz bands, comes to Fiddle Farm. Bob used to play trumpet with him, but after taking up the clarinet himself, the two now play classical clarinet for about three hours whenever Jack can make it.

Bob has a standing gig on Saturday nights at the Ledford House Restaurant in Albion, a venue he highly commends for continuing “to keep the local music scene alive and paying its musicians a standard gig fee.” With outstanding jazz musician and Ledford House musical director Terry Simcik on guitar, Bob plays clarinet, a very muted trumpet, or occasionally the flute for the dinner crowd; when Terry is otherwise engaged on a Saturday, Bob will play with well-known local jazz pianists Richard Cooper or John Gilmore.

So, life on Fiddle Farm today is anything but retiring. Bob keeps it full of music, and his wife Dorothy, retired from the Mendocino school district and now an adjunct professor in education at Dominican College, keeps an impressive vegetable garden next to a lovely apple orchard overseen by pet donkeys Mr. Heehaw and Don Quixote. Bob remains so humble, so nonchalant about the huge impact he’s had on hundreds of musicians, young and old. Even though local schools shamefully have no music program now, for twenty-eight years Bob Ayres planted the seed of music in countless students in Mendocino, many of whom will play music for the rest of their lives. Roscoe Tuomala, now a building contractor in Elk and trumpet player in the Boonville Big Band, was Bob’s student in the early 2000s. “I wouldn’t still be playing, if not for Bob. He’s a natural teacher, a very charismatic individual,” says Roscoe. “He takes on people at any level, and can cut through to teach in an exciting way.” He aspires to Bob’s level of utter dedication, and adds, “Bob is part of what keeps the music force alive here. He always has something going on.”

Bob Ayres’ creative brilliance continues to inspire confidence and to provide musicians of all ages and skills the impetus and opportunity to practice and perform regularly, to stretch and grow, and to deliver intoxicating jazz to appreciative fans. REM Denice Breaux

The thing that stands out for me with regard to my brother is his infec-tious enthusiasm for jazz. Countless times I remember visiting him and enjoying playing music with him and receiving his generous sharing of his thorough knowledge of jazz. I’m referring not only to his encyclope-dic knowledge of the history of the music and the musicians, but even more, his effectiveness as a jazz educator. I always came away from ses-sions with him with a rejuvenated interest in further developing my own knowledge and skills as a musician in the jazz idiom. His encouragement to me and his inspiring example of musician discipline (hard work) demon-strates what musicians mean when they talk about “paying dues.” He has not only been a great influence on me as a big brother, but I also see that many other musicians have grown and benefitted from being around him. —WALTER AYRES

I travel every ten days or so from the Bellsprings Mountains East of 101 to the Fiddle Farm in Albion where I spend two to four hours with Bob and Dorothy Ayres. To me these are some of the best times of my life and worth commuting so many hours for. I am a piano player. And Bob is my teacher and mentor. He plays expertly and professionally the trumpet, clarinet, flute, cello, violin, bass, piano, organ, accordion, etc. Let’s just say, he can play most every instrument he gets his hands on and if he’s never seen it before, he’ll figure out how to play it by day’s end if not sooner. And of course, he reads music in every clef and arranges, transposes, orchestrates, improvises, leads, teaches, and shares all this with others. Dorothy, his wife, a renowned educa-tor in her own right, is the staff that holds all this together.

I am a classical pianist and I enjoy spending hours in his studio, me at the Yamaha Grand and he on whatever instrument he desires to play. We like to sight-read compositions we’ve never seen before and we go from one Ba-roque composer to another, usually spending most of our time on Bach. When we tire of the baroque era we go to the Romantics and dwell on Schumann and Brahms. And of course, we don’t forget the Russians or the French. We play Stravinsky, me, trying to do a drum part on the piano while he plays that fantastic and incredibly difficult trumpet lead in Petroushka. And then there’s Debussy. Usually, we end our sessions by playing a little jazz. This helps me tremendously with my jazz improv and with singing on pitch. And he, well, he doesn’t need any help on this. He is kind, a gentleman and a scholar, and tolerates me.

At the end of our sight-reading sessions, he retreats to an old carriage house behind the main house, where he goes to make copies for me of the music we decide to work on. This beautiful old building houses not only his copying machine but every instrument he has ever owned and some of these I have never seen or heard of before. He has an old grand pedal organ and some of the first electric keyboards no longer on the market that have some incredibly beautiful tones. We had a music session in this carriage house which to me was quite a challenge since I went from acoustic to electric on an instrument I had not played before. Of course, he knows everything about it. I am no longer surprised about this because this is what he does, who he is, in totality. We hardly speak on anything else but chord changes, what key it’s in, who wrote it, and are we in tune.

Music sessions at the Fiddle Farm are magic. It’s a place I go to immerse myself completely in music. Bob Ayres is much more than a music professor and an orchestra leader; he is Maestro. He is Maestro Bob Ayres.
