All the staff at the Cité internationale join me in wishing you a warm welcome. The Cité internationale was created with the aim of encouraging students, researchers and artists from all

over the world to meet and interact.

Each year, students from 140 nationalities rub shoulders within the halls of residence which provide accommodation for a mix of nationalities and disciplines. Over and above academic success, I hope that you will make the most of this unique cultural diversity.

Every house and all our reception services provide practical advice and a listening ear, so as to ensure that you have a pleasant stay with us. You can also make the most of a comprehensive network of resources to simplify and enhance your daily life: library, esp@ce langues (languages centre), sports activities and a host of cultural events.

For my part, I look forward to exchanging ideas with you within the Assembly of Committees of Residents’ Representatives.

He wished to create a meeting and living envi-ronment where future international elites would be able to get to know each other “in order to prevent humanity suffering again from the same horrors” and to guarantee peace. In implementing this project, he received the support of Paul APPELL, rector of the University of Paris.

sErVING AN IDEAl

The plan took shape thanks to Émile DEUTSCH dE LA MEURTHE who funded the first hall of residence in 1925. For close on 30 years, André HONNORAT devoted his energy to the devel-opment of the Cité internationale. Today, this location, unique throughout the world, com-prises 40 houses*, with varied architecture, in a wooded park.

A private foundation with public utility status, the Cité internationale is headed by Marcel POCHARD, a Senior Member of the Council of State.

2010: HONNOrAT yEAr

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the death of André HONNORAT, 2010 will be marked with a number of events in his honour: an international conference, lecture cycle and exhibition of photographs… A competition will be launched to design a creative digital project. THE rEsIDENTs’ cOmmITTEEs

At the start of the academic year, each house holds elections following which Residents’ Committees are formed. The committee plays a key role in the life and activities of each hall of residence. It plays a part in its social and cultural life, organises dialogue with the management and appoints representatives to the Board or house committee.

rEprEsENT yOUr HOUsE

During the Residents’ Committees elections, each house appoints two representatives to the assembly of Committees of residents’ representatives (ADCR in French) which repre-sents all the residents’ committees. This meets once a month with the Director of General Delegation.

The members of the ADCR elect two resident administrators who sit as of right on the Cité internationale Board.

GET INVOlVED IN clUBs AND AssOcIATIONs

≥ AIRCUP (International Association of Residents at the Cité Universitaire de Paris) created by and on behalf of the residents organises activities for residents, in particular an annual party.

≥ Alliance Internationale is the Cité internation-ale’s alumni association, bringing together an international network of former residents. Open to residents from their arrival, it offers: a proof-reading service for theses written in French, advice on creating a CV, and help with finding a job, etc.

≥ PariCité is an environmental asssociation, bringing together all the committees’ environ-ment delegates, along with anyone interested in working to promote sustainable develop-ment at the Cité internationale.

The Cité internationale has made a commit-ment to sustainable development by adopting a charter signed by all its stakeholders. Its objec-tives are to ensure that the campus is an envi-ronmentally friendly living place and to foster social cohesion and solidarity.

TOWARdS THE CREATIOn OF An ECO-CAMPUSEvery house sorts its waste and has a collection point for used batteries of all types. Practical initiatives such as the progressive installation of water savers and solar panels are already in operation in some houses. Projects are underway to adopt a sustainable purchasing policy, limit energy consumption and protect the estate’s biodiversity. Sponsorship campaign projects also play a major role in sus-tainable development.

PLanninG iniTiaTivES Residents are encouraged to get involved by adopting some simple everyday steps. an infor-mation point at the maison internationale will be available by the end of 2009 where any ques-tions can be answered. You will find a container

a LECTUrE CyCLE The 2009 cycle of CitéDébats will bring together specialists, scientists and personalities, to dis-cuss issues associated with sustainable devel-opment. The 1st session will focus on mobility and transport (20 October, 7pm, Franco-British College), the 2nd on eco-consumption and the 3rd on world governance of sustainable development.≥ [email protected]

Throughout the year, a team is at your service, providing help with:> information on administrative formalities (resi-dence permit, health insurance, obtaining a stu-dent job and opening a bank account, etc.);> information on daily life in Paris (transport, leisure, etc.).This service also offers French workshops and cultural visits.

From 8th September to 11th December, an enhanced reception unit run by a multilingual team from a number of different departments is available to deal with your requests.

> French Office for Immigration and Integration: 1st request for residence permit, arranging appointments for compulsory health checks for non-Europeans;

> Departmental Work, Employment and Vocational Training Directorate: information on student work permits and how to change from student to employee status;

> Benefits Centre: housing benefit;

It also seeks to bring together guest artists and professionals and organises social evenings and cultural visits in the Île-de-France.

cENTrAl lIBrAry

The library houses general, multi-disciplinary and multimedia collections focusing on French culture. It has a WIFI network, 22 IT workstations and a printing, photocopying and word processing service. As a “virtual Library”, it offers access to 50 data-bases and 4,500 websites from the study bedrooms of houses connected to the Cité internationale network.

Other resource centres within houses: Brazil, Spain, Japan, Mexico and Heinrich HEINE Houses.

The University restaurant offers different meal options at student rates:≥ blue menu: starter, dessert and main course chosen from the dishes of the day or chicken, chips and salad.≥ red menu: starter or dessert with main course chosen from: grill, pizza, French speciality or international dish, etc.≥ There are also wok dishes, a fresh fish or organic option and themed meals. Come and try out the restaurant during the residents’ forum: the dinner will be free for residents!

The cafeteria serves meals to eat in or take away: breakfast, snacks and drinks… At week-ends, it offers a full take-away meal at €2.90 (student rate).

The restaurant in Spain House offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menu options and the cafe-teria in Heinrich HEinE House offers breakfasts and snacks.

A bank is located in Maison Internationale with cash machines accessible 7 days a week, 7am to 10pm.

THE cITé INTErNATIONAlE THEATrE

Always at the cutting edge of the latest trends in artistic creation, the Theatre hosts the Cité internationale’s cultural projects (performing arts, visual arts and music). It brings in profes-sional artists, often working across disciplines. It also offers practice studios open to all musi-cians and a welcome programme for resident artists.

A Fund for Student Initiatives

Provided by the Cité internationale, this fund

supports residents who wish to undertake artistic, community, sporting or cultural projects. Submit your application before 12 December 2009!


THE sympHONy OrcHEsTrA AND THE cHOIr

The Cité internationale orchestra brings together some 90 young instrumentalists of all nationalities, resident or otherwise, and per-forms several concerts a year. A choir of around a hundred members, open to all residents, enjoys a varied repertoire.

Stays on the Île de Bréhat

Throughout the year, residents can spend a few days in brittany, in a house bequeathed by the poet Edmond HaraUCoUrT. accommodation is free of charge in July and august. residents only have to cover travel and living costs.
