A la carte When we started the A la carte restaurant evenings in February, no one could have predicted the suc-cess it was to become. We had 23 bookings for our first night but two weeks ago, for our fourth dinner, we had 56 guests. Some residents, family members, friends, village

residents and staff have made the restaurant evenings a regular treat, and we welcome new guests every month. In April, we had an eclectic a la carte menu with dishes from India, Thai-land, China and Mexico. In May, chef Debbie opted for a buffet dinner and guests loved it. The dining room was buzzing, eve-ryone had a great time and enjoyed the creamy soup and fresh buns, the carved ham, fish, coq au vin, a variety of salads and vegetables. Eyes grew wide when the dessert trolley came around with cheesecake, brownie, pavlova, fruit and jelly and apple pie what a treat. The hard work put in by the whole team is well worthwhile as it brings happiness to the residents and adds to the facilitys range of special events.

Outings We managed to enjoy some very nice out-ings before the cold weather kicked in. A few weeks ago, one of our residents (Graham) took a trip down memory lane (literally) as his daughters had invited us to

  • 5

visit them at his homestead in Tuti-ra. It was a fun filled hour long van ride there singing Que sera sera and admiring the wonderful au-tumn colours nature displayed as we went. Once there, we were welcomed by Grahams daughters and a working dog demonstration. While Graham had a wander around, the other residents were treated to homemade muffins and orange fudge. We have been invited to come back this winter after the lambs are born, this should make for another great trip.

A group of residents enjoyed a lovely outing to the Serendipity caf in Hastings where we met some of our friends from Gracelands. The caf is set in a garden centre so we had a lit-tle walk around before sitting down to some mouth watering afternoon tea and a warming hot drink.

Mens club Our mens group have been very helpful in the past, using their talents to turn old outdoor furniture into new looking items. This time, they deliv-ered again and gave the dining room display shelves a new lease of life. The first step was to sand the paint off the shelves and the men did so very

energetically while chatting to each other. It was a lot of hard work so they enjoyed relaxing with a cold one afterwards and continue their reminiscing. Step two was the painting and it went very smoothly as amongst the group, we had a builder and a resident who had painted seven houses in the past! We did the job without making too much mess and once again, our

blokes enjoyed a well-deserved beer after-wards. Thank you guys!

Its not just all hard work though as the Men also had an outing to the Kiwi Man Cave re-cently. Our six keen men boarded the van and we headed to 46 Hastings Street Napier to their new shop. They stock a huge range of manly stuff including Harley Davidson, and biker gear. Tui, Speights, Waikato, Lion Red, Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Ford and Hold-

en merchandise to name the big names, plus many more inter-esting and fun bits and pieces. The friendly shop keeper let us take fun photos of the men enjoying themselves. They had lots of laughs reading all the hilarious quotes on cups, t-shirts and signs. Its a great shop for a manly gift .We now have plenty of ideas for setting up their own man cave back at Atawhai.

Cooking Rhubarb Fizz sounds intriguing? It was the perfect recipe to make good use of the rhubarb a friend had kindly gifted us...and our residents loved it! First residents chopped up a lot of rhu-barb into small pieces and mixed it with sugar and water. The mixture was then cooked and left to rest for a week to become a sweet syrup. The next week it was time to mix the syrup with some soda water and lemonade. We tried to follow the recipe but after sampling the first brew, decided it was too sweet. So we made up our own mix. A little bit of rhubarb syr-up, two cups of soda water, one cup of lem-onade or was that two? In the end, no two bottles had the same measure of ingredients in it. It was a lot of fun to bottle our own brew. Staff and other residents passing by stopped to have a taste and even the ones

  • 7

who dont usually like the taste of rhubarb thought the drink was very nice and refreshing. To finish off, we put our own labels on the bottles, making it our own very special Atawhai brew. We asked the residents when they would like to use the rhubarb fizz and they unanimously decided the bottles should be opened during the Easter Sunday lunch for all residents to enjoy and enjoy it they did!

We liked the experience so much we had a go at making ginger beer last month. Two of residents cultivated the bug for a week, religiously adding a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of ginger everyday for a week. It was then time to add the water, some lemon zest and more sugar before bottling. It will be ready to sample for our Favourite things themed lunch.

Arts & crafts Lavender sachets: Residents love to go out for a walk or a wheelchair walk and smell the lovely scent of the variety of flowers we have in the Atawhai gardens. Lavender is found in quite a few areas of the facility so earlier in April, as we took some residents out for a walk, we stopped and cut some along the way. We then all sat at the lounge table and pulled the flowers off the stalks. We laid them to dry on some newspaper in a box and left them for six weeks, making sure we gave them a little shake every day to ensure they would dry thoroughly. In May, we set up the sewing machine for an arts and crafts session. A group of residents cut heart shapes from pieces of material while the lovely Ruby took to the sewing machine and had a go at sewing them. As we only had time to sew two hearts due to a prob-lem with the thread tension, our lovely RN Lorraine offered to sew some more for the

  • 8

residents. A few days later, she kindly delivered 15 little heart shaped bags, all of different colours. Residents gathered again the next week and filled up the shapes with the dry lavender. Helen sewed on some ribbons so these scented sachets would make the perfect gift for hanging in someones room or ward-robe. They look amazing!

Library trolley Residents love to read and thanks to volunteers extraordinaire Jean (who is also a cottage resident) and ex Atawhai Manager Sheryl, we are able to offer a mobile library service. Sheryl goes to the library once a week to select books of every genre as well as some audio books for the activities team to use with residents. Once a week, Jean goes around the residents rooms, picking up and offering books, taking note of the residents requests. It is a very tough job recording all the comings and goings as well as chasing up the odd book that has gone walk-about. Thank you ladies for the fantastic job you are doing, we are very blessed to have you offer your time for our residents. The library service makes a big difference to the residents daily lives and allow them to escape through books and keep the mind ticking over.

ANZAC Day In the last two newsletters, we mentioned the amazing help we received from cottage residents, staff and volunteers with our Poppy project. In total we were gifted 450 all-different-looking knitted/crocheted poppies. A week before ANZAC day, Kerry made a cross out of polystyrene while I cut a circle for a wreath. Residents then used wire to attach the knitted poppies onto the cross and the wreath. Slowly, all the spaces were filled and the finished product looked amazing. Kerry fixed it onto our AN-ZAC display wall. It was soon surrounded by photos , memora-bilia as well as testimonials from four of our resident veterans..

The week leading to ANZAC day, we had a reminiscing session about the war, what it meant for those who went and those who stayed behind. It was quite emotional when a resident who was in the merchant navy shared with tears in his eyes how even though he tries to remember the good times, he can never forget the times when the seas were very rough or when comrades were dying around him and how at that moment, he would pray he would see his mother one more time. Two of our residents who are related shared how they clearly remember the day the war started as they were together that day and can still hear then British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlains voice on the radio announcing they were at war.

The day before ANZAC day, we had a war time rations themed lunch that consisted in an egg (eggs were rationed you know) with half a piece of bread and dripping, a portion of mutton stew with veges from the garden and ginger steamed pudding with a little runny cream to finish off. Morning tea was a real treat though with yummy victory gems on offer, made even more special because it was our chef Debbies nanas nanas rec-ipe!

The day finally came and over a hundred people (residents, families, village residents, volunteers) attended the ANZAC com-memorative service at Atawhai. I took the service along with our new chaplain Glen McLeod and my two children who are also St John cadets. Jack Dunlop, 94, one of our veterans who was in the RNZAF, laid the wreath with my son Elijah, 12. We did re-member them.

As part of the our favourite things survey, we asked our res-idents to share with us what their favourite thing about Atawhai was, here is what some of then had to say:

The lovely staff - The friendly people - The wonderful staff who go out of their way to help and please - The lovely caring staff and wonderful meals All the lovely caring staff who look after me Company, security, lovely staff - The individual staff members - The wonderful and dedicated staff - My friends (patients) and staff who I love - The staff who love me too - The kindness and friendship of the staff and residents - I feel secure and safe at Atawhai - There is always help and advice when I need it - This page is not big enough to record all the things I like about Atawhai. I have been in another home and I know what Im talking about. I speak with experience. I even take into account what residents of other homes have to say and I know Im in the best place.

Staff hold a special place in residents hearts. Our hard work, love, care and compassion can make each day a special one for them. Thank you to all the residents for your kind-ness and appreciation. This is what being part of the Atawhai family is all about.
